This week, we go hunting for some gas, fill up the tanks, buy and fit a new life raft and cook a monk fish curry after a viewers request for help! (You can't say we don't provide variety!) We recently purchased a new refillable tank as it had been very hard to get the butane gas tanks filled and swapped over the last few months so we wanted a back up and have had our regulators changed so we can now use both. We also purchased a long over due piece of kit... A life raft, we had been sailing locally recently and had an old back up on board but it was time to bite the bullet, spend the money and get it done. We take a short motor down the River Orwell to Suffolk Yacht Harbour to fill up the tanks which we got completely stung for.. (£1.56 per litre for red diesel) I hadn't thought to check before filling as our marina charge 67p per litre... Gutted to say the least but a lesson learnt and won't be going back there for fuel again. Finally we make a monkfish curry! Ingredients below. (I have done a recipe for 2 ppl below so double if making more) 2 x fillets of monkfish (Remove all skin and sinew.. very important) and chop in to chunks. 1 x white onion sliced 4 x garlic cloves thinly sliced 1 x thumb of ginger (fine dice or grated) 1 x small Thai chilli - Diced (or any chilli to your taste, Remember to check for heat) 1 x Tbs tomato puree 1 x Chicken / fish or veg stock 4 x curry leaves 1 x juice of 1 lime 1 x bunch coriander rough chop 1 x bunch of parsley rough chop 1 x Tin chopped tomatoes Splash of white wine or apple cider vinegar 200 ml water Salt and pepper Basmati Rice - 100g per person Spice Mix (You can switch out seeds for powdered if you have that) 1 x tsp coriander seeds 2 x tsp cumin seeds 1 x tsp fennel seeds 1 x tsp smoked paprika 3 x curry leaves 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 1 x tsp tumeric (Or freshly grated if you have) All into a pestle and mortar and grind to a powder. Method Prep monkfish.. removing all the skin and sinew and chop into chunks Use 1/4 of spice mix and season with spices, olive oil, salt pepper and half a lime juice. Leave to one side Rinse twice and soak rice in cold water, leave in water for 20 mins Prep veg, Chop onion, dice, chilli, garlic, ginger, turmeric, herbs. Sere monkfish in a pan 30-60 second on each side and remove to a bowl keep the juices Heat pan for curry, butter or olive oil in pan, in with onions to soften, garlic, chilli, ginger, fry for a couple of minutes then add a splash of vinegar, once reduced add tomato puree, rest of the spices, tomatoes, stock cube, water, salt, pepper and simmer for 10 mins, Boil kettle, drain rice water it was soaking in, then fill with boiling water and boil for 6-8 mins, taste it, it should be just under cooked as it will finish cooking in steam. Drain water and leave to steam for 1-2 mins. Then ready to season and serve. Whilst rice is on add monkfish to curry for 4-5 mins in simmer add the herbs and squeeze of lime. Serve and enjoy. Remember you can add anything to this basic recipe, chicken, veggies, other fish, meats etc... Any questions please comment below! Empezamos el vídeo explicando cómo fijamos los nuevos pasacabos (fairleads, en inglés) para ya luego meternos al trapo con el piloto automático. Después de unos cuantos días dándole a la cabeza sobre como mejorar la geometría de su actuador, finalmente surgió la idea de añadir un soporte adicional en el brazo del timón para así conseguir que transmita el par a 90 grados, como repetimos unas 4 veces en el vídeo... Y aún falta inventar unos topes para evitar que el timón rote más de 45 grados a cada lado... Queda pendiente para el siguiente viaje! Esperamos que os resulte interesante. Saludos amig@s!

In most cases, the hardest part of this job is breaking loose the rusty thread so you can adjust the drag link. Having a wrench and socket set is all you need to loosen things up. For turning the drag link shaft, you will need a pipe wrench. Another nice to have, if not required, is spray lubricant. Turning the draglink adjustment shaft without lubricant may be next to impossible. Transiting the Panama Canal on a 33ft boat Many years ago, at the end of our sailing season, we left our 32ft Eclipse catamaran in a marina in Panama and took a bus to Colon to look for a boat that we could help through the Panama Canal. After a couple of days walking the docks we eventually met "Captain Woody" in the yacht club bar (where else!). Woody is a well known American yachting journalist (he was a regular contributor to Latitudes and Attitudes magazine) and was then nearing the end of his solo circumnavigation. His boat was "Low Key", a Cal 33 monohull that was the same length as Eclipse, but, in comparison, tiny, both on deck and below. He now runs Adventure Voyaging https://adventurevoyaging.com/about-us/ and also works as a captain for Sea Shepherd. The canal is about 50 miles from sea to sea, so this is a longer video as it covers a 24hr trip. A trip that is often stressful, especially for low powered boats like Low Key or Eclipse. The penalties for taking too long for the transit, or worse, stopping altogether, are severe! Fortunately for Woody, transit day was calm with no wind, until we met a sea breeze leaving the last lock and were heading out into the Pacific. It's normal to do a trial run on a friends boat to "case the joint" before going though as skipper. Apart from Jetti and I, Woody also picked up 2 others, as 4 line handlers are required, one per line, port and starboard. These, plus the helmsman and Canal Pilot are a lot on a 33ft boat, especially one normally sailed singlehanded. The transit takes most of the day, furthermore yachts not allowed to travel in the canal after dark. Thus yachts leaving the Caribbean go through the first set of locks at dusk the evening before. Often right behind a big ship, see the heading photo of our Eclipse in the first lock. It's pretty scary when the gates open and the ship leaves. Few people are ever that close to a turning ship propellor and the bouncing from the wash is very stressful! It was obvious why 4 line handlers were needed! All told, that's why there's no video of the first locks. Once clear of the locks yachts pick up a mooring for the night, so the transit proper can start at daybreak the next day. When "empty" the locks are still about 12m-40ft deep and this determines the maximum draft of ships. The "Bridge of Americas" is 198ft high and that limits the size of sail boats (yes some yachts have masts taller than that, so cannot get through) Most of the canal runs through the man made Gatun Lake, so we spent hours motoring slowly through a flooded rain forest. When it was formed Gatun Lake was the largest such lake in the world and is about 27m, 90ft, above nominal sea level. Like all yachts, we used the Banana Cut as a short cut, done in part to avoid ships, so we didn't meet any until we got to the canal proper. The lake section is about 20 miles, while the canal section is about 8 miles. The remaining distance include the access channels, the locks and their approaches. So it's all very different from the Kiel Ship canal, which is a similar length, but an entirely man made, narrow channel. And also very different to the much smaller (but with many more locks) Gota Canal across Sweden (see my Day Sail to Russia video for those passages, watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8mwQFaNsM8 ) I still vividly remember going singlehanded through the very crowded Trollhatten locks at the end of the Gota Canal, and not being able to use warps, instead pushing the boat off a sheer rock face by hand. A lock that actually had a greater drop than any in the Panama canal. The Gaillard Cut has the steepest banks in the canal and needs constant repair from daily landslides. Dredgers and bulldozers have been at work full time since 1914. As always, going through the locks was very much a "hurry up and wait" process. Usually delays are when waiting for a ship going the other way that was running late. Going down through locks is always easier and it was certainly easy for us to catch the thrown ropes - and 4 handlers made it even simpler, but you can see why it's recommended to place cushions on any solar panels! The on-shore line handlers had a lot of walking to do when the yachts move through the locks - ships have small trucks to take their warps. Then finally it was out of the last lock, drop off the pilot and out into the Pacific under the Bridge of America.
