Done right, when a port tack boat ducks behind a starboard tack boat in a close crossing, the port tack boat can come out ahead at the next crossing. This video shows you how it is done.

Fiji 2021- Part I (Ep. 12) | Back living the dream & swimming with Manta Rays in the Yasawa Islands.
After we arrive in Fiji we make the most of our week of quarantine at anchor and cross a few jobs of our to-do list before we get our health clearance and the all-go to cruise the outer islands. We head straight over to Musket Cove for a 'proper arrival' which means we make the most of being back in the tropics and in our favourite watersport location and get straight back into living the dream! With covid cases rising on the main island we decide to head north up the Yasawas to escape it all and get away from covid and spend our days swimming with majestic Manta Rays. We are now 'Living the Dream' aboard our second boat, an Ocean 80, sailing the South Pacific looking for incredible spots to surf, kite surf and explore! Covid has certainly made travle more difficult these last few years but we still feel fortunate to have NZ and Fiji open to us at this stage!

If you are sailing in this area, it is a good idea to plot out where all possible anchorages may be in advance should you need to seek shelter in an emergency. We had signed up to ‘Panama Posse’ and we extracted the information from their website and added all suggested anchorages to Navionics in advance. This was helpful. Relieved that we have diesel again, we depart from Santa Catalina with a planned final destination being Vista Mar Marina where we hope to meet up with YKnot to say goodbye to them as they are due to depart for the Galapagos. Our passage to Vista Mar was planned out so that we would have day sails with an overnight in some quiet anchorages. The longest passage would be the one from Benao to Vista Mar due to the distance and the fact that we would have the current against us. Our fist stop was Isla Cebaco which is 13nm away from Santa Catalina. There is a large protected bay on the western end of the island called Ensenada Del Naranjo. When we were low on diesel, this anchorage was one of the options we were considering going to, to get more diesel as we had read that there is a fuel barge here and a few Game Fishing boats. Luckily we didn’t choose this option as there was no fuel barge and no fishing boats either. There was a mooring field but it looked old and we suspect that it would be unsafe. We very rarely pick up a mooring and prefer the safety of our 32Kg Bruce anchor. We explore the beautiful bay. To have this all to ourselves is incredible. There one house on shore and apart from that we are surrounded by jungle and an amazing coastline. At night a small local fishing boat arrives and anchors between us and the shore. This can be scary when you are in remote locations especially when you have a wife and children onboard. They settle down for the night and eventually so do we. The next morning we depart in unsettled weather and make our way to the next overnight anchorage just north of Punta Naranjo. As we arrive there, we discover the anchorage is too exposed for us so we abandon and head 3nm further north to Bahia Arenas. In the intermittent rain we drop anchor keeping a close eye on wind direction changes due to exposed rocks on our starboard side. We set the anchor alarm and have a good sleep. The next morning we depart for Benao which had been recommended to us as a great surf spot with some cool small hotels. We arrive there and anchor in the north east corner of the bay. We feel a lot safer here anchored alongside the Aero Naval launch and a busy beach. The boys head off to surf and Claire and I explore the beach and a small river. There are some really nice hotels and surf schools on the beach. We manage to find one with Wifi so we buy some drinks and enjoy a Wifi fix. This anchorage is great but we believe that it could become untenable if the wind comes from the South East to the South West. Our next destination is Vista Mar Marina to see Yknot. We depart from Benao and make our way in an Easterly direction towards Punta Mala where we expect to encounter a Southerly current. We start to feel the current pushing us south and with the wind coming from the north, this makes the challenge of getting to Vista Mar as we had planned quite a task. We soon realize that Vista Mar is not an option unless we are ok with spending a considerable amount of time at sea tacking up to Vista Mar with the elements against us. It becomes clear that Las Perlas will be our destination. Not by choice. Talking it through though, we decided this was actually a good plan as we wont be tacking our way through fishing fleets and the shipping channel and that we would only have to cross the shipping channel once. During the day we hardly see any fishing boats and at night they all seem to appear. 90% don't have AIS and they have so many lights on, you cannot identify which way they are going. Radar is good for this though. We cross the shipping channel and have to call up a couple of ships to make sure they have seen us. Some don't answer. We make is safely to San Jose and are welcomed by dolphins.

Maximum expression of the intuition of her Owner who directly oversaw the project in every detail. Kenshō redefines the boundaries of space, distribution and luxury on superyachts, the emblem of something new, personal and revolutionary. M/Y Kenshō has an innovative “diesel-electric” propulsion system, which has given it the “ECO” notation of the Classification Body. Kenshō integrates the best ideas of residential design and marine design to create a new quality of life at sea. Kenshō was born from the hand of the Owner who drew in a pencil sketch consisting of 12 lines, in the winter of 2016, the symbolic and concrete union of form and function. The Owner’s intuition has also been able to unite a strong team made up of naval architects and designers AZURE (Netherlands) and the design studio archineers.berlin (Germany) who have been able to transform that which was a simple design in a variety of generous outdoor spaces, and unique features. When racing non-windward leewards (coastal courses, distance races, navigator’s courses, around government marks), boats need to have sails for reaching legs. The variation of legs means leads to a variety of sails. This video is a clear example of why boats with non-overlapping jibs do not reach well. It shows two 35-footers jib-reaching to the finish line in the same race. The first boat is a Beneteau First 34.7 with an overlapping genoa. You can see the sheet has been eased as the foot of the sail is out over the lifelines. The sail looks like it is trimmed well from the bottom to the top. The second boat is a C&C 110 with a tall, skinny non-overlapping jib. Notice how the top of the jib is completely luffing. This sail could have been trimmed better by using an outboard lead located further forward, but the sail is still not the right sail for reaching.

I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide. Join us! -------------------------- Gerald from Buffalo, New York, has owned his Tiwal 3 inflatable sailboat for over a year. While he has experience on larger keelboats, he now primarily sails his sailing dinghy locally on Lake Erie and other small lakes . He values the convenience of this portable sailboat, transporting it by car and assembling this small sailboat at the lake, or leaving it pre-assembled at his local sailing school for quick launching. He mostly sails solo, enjoying the simple controls and relaxing experience of this light sailboat compared to more complex keelboats. He finds the Tiwal so much fun and convenient that he uses it almost as much as the keelboats, especially since he doesn't need to find a crew for this sailing boat. The reefable sail extends his sailing window into Force 4 conditions. Gerald loves the boat's handling, responsiveness, and speed in light wind. He also highlights its portability as a key feature of this inflatable dinghy, as the bags are manageable for him to carry and assemble. He fondly recalls a glorious sunset sail with his wife, surrounded by loons and bald eagles. While he has aspirational dreams of sailing this dinghy in places like Tahiti, he is ultimately very satisfied with his current sailing experiences in New York.
