In this episode we get a professional rigger and surveyor to guide us through the process of tensioning our rig after repairing the broken bulkheads on our Lagoon 450 catamaran. He advises us that the worst possible thing to do on a catamaran is to over tension the rig, as the results are catastrophic, as we have seen many times before on other multihulls, and may even have contributed slightly towards the failure of our bulkheads, however seeing as hundreds of other lagoon 450's have broken bulkheads, it appears that the underlying issue is deeper than just the rigging... During the pre-purchase survey of our sailing catamaran there were several problem items not uncovered. One, very important item was our navigation equipment and electronics. It turns out, on our sailboat the electronics are patched, some newer technology and some really old technology which never communicated amongst themselves. As a result none of our instruments worked well or completely. In this video we are removing the old navigation electronics and we are installing A new chart plotter and radar from B&G. Also, We dealt with some unpleasant opposition while dangling from our mast! Sometimes you just have to stand your ground and take back what’s yours!! Wow were there a lot of squalls on our passage! Crossing 2200 nautical miles across the Atlantic was actually a little tougher than expected and as much as we love sailing and hate to come across negative, we did struggle with the mental battle a little towards the end, as well as dealing with all the squalls coming our way ...squall after squall after squall! We pick up some good friends of ours in George Town, then sail to some of the smaller islands near the southern Exumas. We spend a day in Calabash Bay on Long Island catching up with cruiser friends, then we head off for a day of sailing over to Rum Cay. We sailed to Cape Town To check out for our final departure and we had a few things go wrong. I was quite confident after taking a look at the marina and our docking spot, the week before sailing down that I would be able to get us through the marina and docked safely. What I hadn’t taken into account was being pushed into the marina by gusts of wind directly behind us. I hadn’t experienced that before and things went horribly wrong but after a total meltdown Robin stepped in and got us safely into the mooring within minutes. During the sail we discovered that we needed vacuum breaks on our raw water system because we suspect, after the engine wouldn’t start en-route, that water had got from the exhaust system back into the engine. After our initial panic thinking this was going to be a huge problem that would affect our departure date, we calmed down, and with the help of Chris Booke, we managed to get the systems on both engines sorted and left, to return to Saldanha Bay at 7pm in the evening. The sails both, to and from Cape Town went very well, we were frozen to the bone and Teagan and I got pretty seasick but the trip was a great experience. After buying a boat in South Africa, Robin had always talked about how he would love to leave Cape Town and see Table Mountain in his rear view mirror - well leaving Cape Town at 7pm we were blessed with a beautiful sunset and the experience was pretty spectacular - bucket list item ✅ for Robin.

The round turn and two half hitches is a hitch used to secure the end of a rope to a fixed object. The name refers to the components used to form the knot: a round turn wraps the rope around the object (completely encircling it) and the two half hitches secure the end around the standing part. The round turn with two half hitches is a great knot for tying your fenders to your boat for docking. We prefer this option if you are going to be leaving your boat docked for long periods of time. It will hold tight ensuring your boat is protected by the fenders while you are away. There are other fenders knot that are easier to untie, we would only recommend these for short stays or when you a remaining on the boat while docked. If you will be leaving your boat for an extended period of time the Round Turn with two Half Hitches is the best option. Welcome aboard Wicked! She is finally on the hard and ready for a makeover. first we address all the damage on the starboard side of the hull where she was beached. to to do we use a gel peel machine that cut through layers and layers of gelcoat like butter! We saw another channel "Barefoot Travels" use one on their Hurricane Damaged Catamaran and knew it was a tool that would save us countless hours in grinding and sanding away gelcoat. The boat refit is in full swing there's no turning back now! ****************** After months of "couch sailing" on YouTube we decided it was time to stop dreaming and dream and start living it. Brit has wanted to sail and own boat for many years but it was always something that didn't seem it could possible for us. Until we stumbled across countless and I mean countless YouTube Channels like, La Vagabonde, Beau & Brandy, Sailing Uma, SV Delos, Parlay Revival, Tula's Endless Summer, Odd Life Crafting, Expedition Evans and the list goes on. We can only hope to inspire one person to chase their dreams as they have inspired us to. After what seemed like a long search for a sailboat we learned about hurricane damaged boats for auction down in the Caribbean. We came across a listing for a 43 Beneteau Oceanis that was currently being auctioned. We put in our bid and got out bid a few times before finally winning in the end. We had a short window to get from California to St. Thomas USVI to secure our purchase. Now the fun begins! It is time to refit this hurricane damaged sailboat make her our own. Thanks for watching!
