Puerto Plata ‘Gran desfile carnaval’ was on again after 2 years on hold due to the Covid 19 restrictions. Over 58 towns joined from all over the country to meet on the North Shore city of Puerto Plata. The ‘comparsas’ representing the cities from all Rep Dom provinces came: from Barahona, Bonao, or famous La Vega. Dozens more joined the parade on the Malecon, the large seafront avenue leading to the Ancient Fort. . Ages of the participants most likely 5-75 years old. Kids playing devils under heavy costumes are truly to be celebrated. Dancers joined as well and some true gymnasts for the show. You’ll notice the one climbing up a pole at an impressive height. . Enjoy the bold spirit of Latin America carnaval : irreverent and playful! The music and wipes of the devils were deafening and kicked a few directly on their softer parts ! . Spot the Tainos (indigeneous tribes) and Spanish colons inspired comparsas, the pagan devils with their wipes, contemporary political satire.

Hi Gang! Just a quick update. Reverie fair the storm well. No damage. This morning I had to run out as we were getting a below normal tie. Which means that all those lines we adjusted to keep Reverie in place while the tie went up above the dock now ran the risk of suspending Reverie out of the water or breaking a cleat when it went down 1 ft below normal low tie. This is part of managing your risk when you own a boat. Enjoy the update!

Episode 188: WE HIT A WHALE ?! We finally reach the Virgin Islands and catch some dinner. But once we get to anchor we discover our centerboard was broken. We believe we know when it happened during the sail, as we were tacking our way away from Curacao. I think we hit a whale or a submerged shipping container. It was very rough out just past dusk, so visibility was minimal. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Matt and I each tackle a fairing job in our catamaran, but in very different ways. For the 'Him' portion, Matt picks up a project we started back in the fall, of working on our water tanks. We've built them ourselves because they'll be stronger and lighter than plastic, but we need to go through steps of preparing them to hold water, which means using Total Boat's epoxy fairing compound. This fairing compound will stick better, which is very important when it is the container for our potable water. Down below deck, I'm 'beginning finishes' by using Total Boat's polyester fairing compound. There's been a few test rounds in our forward bunk, but in this video I'll be focusing in on our master vanity, and what it takes to blend down the edges of the fiberglass and start getting the first rounds of fairing compound on.
