I passed 2 major courses that I wanted to pass today. The first one was the RYA VHF radio course. This is required to operate a VHF Marine radio in the UK and it covers all kinds of things from how to properly communicate on the radio to MAYDAY calls and lots more. I really wanted to do this course because if i'm planning on sailing in the sea next season then it's very prident to have a handheld VHF radio with you. It can help with all kinds of things from the obvious emergency aspects but also when trying to contact other boats or marinas. I completed this course online and then took the exam whilst doing the other course I passed today!! The second course is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. Passing this means you are competent to sail a powerboat up to 10M and you get a license thats for life. It also allows you to directly apply for the European ICC equivalent with no extra work. I have always wanted to pass this course because I also have a bit of a love of powerboats but also I can now help out at races for my sailing club. Both courses were great fun but you also learnt a heck of a lot. The powerboating course particularly was brilliant, learning loads of new skills and also learning a lot about weather, tides and sea states too. Doing the practical element of this in Novemeber in a very angry River Mersey with 1.5M waves was extremly exhillarating!! Deux temps, trop de mouvements ! La suite de notre transat qui s'annonce surprenante. Après plusieurs jours de pétole où nous battons des records de lenteur, le vent, mais surtout la houle se lèvent soudainement, à tel point que cela en est effrayant ! C'est donc une transat en deux temps-trois mouvements que nous vivons-là. Le temps très nuageux nous forcera à prendre une décision qui nous fera mal au coeur. Nous nous plaignions de la lenteur en début de transat, maintenant tout s'accélère ! La bonne nouvelle, c'est que ces conditions nous permettent d'avancer vite ! This week on Sailing SV CUBA homes in a new chapter! We are now a real international sailing crew and new sailing adventures are on the horizon. Turns out the cooling fan of our fridge had burnt through after some misbehaving the week before. Enrique – a.k.a McGyver – finds a solution to keep our beer and all our provisions from spoiling but a proper solution needs to be found since our USB desk fans are not made to run unattended. The next day we are on the hunt for a fitting 12-volt fan – not an easy feat without an address, living at sea and being new to the island. The next larger city or store with the right spare may be miles and several days of sailing away. Though after a few phone calls and asking around there is hope. George, a lovely Kefalonian gentleman offers to disassemble two old computers in his basement containing two smaller fans. He even brings them right to the beach, so we can meet him and his wife with our dinghy! What an absolutely awesome couple! In our short encounter, the two also tell us of a cave – the magnificent blue Melissani Cave – that we just cannot miss before sailing from Kefalonia to Zakynthos Port where we also need to get our cruising stamp. It is always great to get a tip from a local, so we change our plans, put Navagio Beach a.k.a Smugglers Cove on hold, and drop the anchor in Karavomilos – home to the mythical blue cave of Kefalonia. – And what a truly spectacular a sight it is! In this video we demonstrate how to raise a furling Genoa or jib at the dock in a foul wind by backwinding it against a furled Solent sail on an inner forestay. You could also backwind a Dacron Genoa or jib against the rig if you don’t have an inner forestay, but I wouldn’t recommend doing that with a laminate sail because they are more fragile. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
