To keep the momentum going on our sailboat refit we bring certain things home with us so that we can keep working on the boat even through we're not at the boat. In this video I repair a damaged floor board, remove the old anti-fouling from our propeller, prepare the propeller shaft for reinstallation, and even build a special "vent board" for an AC unit. Thankfully, Molly helps out by ensuring that a high degree of workmanship is always maintained throughout all of our ongoing boat refit projects. Hello and welcome to the Sailing the East podcast. This is our podcast about sailing and cruising the East coast of the United States. In some episodes we will focus on passages and destinations, in other episodes, we will talk about boats, equipment, and techniques, and when we come across an interesting person, we will try to get them as a guest on the show. Today we’re going to talk about replacing the house batteries on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45DS. During the survey we had done in the Fall of 2020, when we purchased Paradox, the surveyor indicated that the lead-acid batteries on the boat were at about 50% of their rated capacity. During the early part of this sailing season, I noticed the batteries were almost depleted after a full day of sailing. So, it is time to replace the house batteries. We discuss why I decided to stay with lead-acid wet cell batteries and not “upgrade” to Gel or Lithium-Ion batteries. Thanks for listening! We will be spending most of the summer sailing around Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, and Buzzards Bay. Hope to see you out on the water. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Bela and Mike

The marina was buzzing with activity, boats were being hauled, dock lines were being doubled, and dodgers were being removed. We got Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45 DS ready for the storm. In the end, everything turned out fine. Thanks for listening! We will be spending most of the summer sailing around Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, and Buzzards Bay. Deak leaks drive me nuts and I am always chasing them down. In this episode, I re-seal the 4 large windows on paradox. It took the better part of a day and the following week the windows got a real test from Hurricane Henri. Thanks for listening! In some episodes we will focus on passages and destinations, in other episodes, we will talk about boats, equipment, and techniques, and when we come across an interesting person, we will try to get them as a guest on the show. In this episode of the podcast, Bela and Mike try a new format for the podcast. When we record a podcast, we usually spend 15 to 30 minutes talking about what’s going on in each other’s lives. This is with the recorder off, so you never hear it. Well, this time we decided to record our conversation. We talk about fishing, the German elections and how the process is different from the one in the USA, a COVID update, life in general, and a few thoughts on some new podcast ideas. Please let us know what you think! Thanks for listening! We will be spending most of the summer sailing around Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, and Buzzards Bay. Hope to see you out on the water. Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. In this episode, we discuss sailing, or should I say motoring to Bristol RI, and seeing the superyacht - Blue Moon. Just search on YouTube for Superyacht Blue Moon and you will see what you can get for $50 million. The following day we also had a wonderful sail in gusty conditions with eight people on board. It all went well, but I should have shortened the sail sooner and a few of our guests were uncomfortable. Lesson learned on my part. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know. If you would like to support the podcast, click on the sponsorship link below. Exploring a rugged uninhabited island is not without risk... like getting caught in weeds and losing your way. Especially when the weeds are thorn bushes armed with daggers. 🔪🩸 After licking our wounds, we set sail for the next Caribbean island only to find there's even MORE WATER COMING IN THE BOAT *cue panic.* 💦 It's always something, amiright? The Multihull Company has developed a team of leading professionals who are some of the most knowledgeable in their field of expertise. We wanted to take some time to introduce you to our team of agents from around the world in our new video series introducing our agents. Next up, Senior TMC Broker in Annapolis, Karl Reed. Captain Karl Reed is one of The Multihull Company’s youngest brokers but is perhaps one of the most ambitious and hardworking. Karl not only has over 70,000 nautical miles under his belt but he is also a co-founder of Rhea Yacht Management, which operates on the US East Coast and in the Caribbean. As a kid, Karl spent his formative years going to sailing camps along the Potomac River, near Washington, DC, and eventually transitioned into teaching at them as a summer job. Karl’s love for sailing grew naturally as he grew up near Annapolis, Maryland, one of the premier sailing destinations within the continental United States while making occasional trips to the Caribbean to visit his birthplace, Haiti. When Karl was 18 he moved to Cape Town for a year to acquire his yachting license under the legendary Offshore Sailor & Clipper Skipper, David Immelman. This training further cemented Karl into sailing and eventually catapulted him into running an Expedition Yacht in the Indian Ocean & Northern Madagascar. From there, Karl gravitated back to sailing performance catamarans around the US East Coast & Caribbean, along with trans-Atlantic trips to Northern Europe. After years in the industry, Karl has garnered a great group of friends and resources which have helped him continue to be able to sail, manage, & broker vessels around the world. Whether you are nearby and looking to buy or sell your catamaran in Annapolis, need catamaran dockage in Annapolis, or just want someone friendly and knowledgeable to speak with, give Captain Karl Reed a call. To get a 1 year supply of Vitamin D + 5 individual travel packs FREE with your first purchase, go to https://athleticgreens.com/svdelos . We try to tread lightly in the places we travel, and respect the local laws and traditions. But sometimes things go sideways. In today's video we decide to leave the outer islands of the San Blas and anchor close to a large non-traditional Kuna Village. We start out by exploring a local river (Rio Diablo) by dinghy. Everything is going to plan until we realize that the water level is incredibly low and the river becomes too shallow for our dinghy. We eventually run aground and have a quick swim before retreating downstream. Nothing ventured nothing gained but we end up having a great time. Then things take a sudden turn. Needing fresh fruit and vegetables we venture into the closest village of Nargana, where our friend Julian we met in the river says he owns a fruit and vegetable stand. Upon approaching the dock we are waved away and told to dock on the other side of the bridge on another island. We go ashore to find an eerily abandoned feeling village blasting music with not a soul to be seen. Wandering around looking for someone to talk to we are approached by a man that says the entire village is closed off to everyone. He gives no explanation other than that. He tells us to leave immediately, instead we end up convincing him to go shopping on our behalf. It was one of our strangest encounters out here, in a place where we have been normally met with nothing but friendly people. You can't win them all I suppose. Not liking the vibe we return to Delos with our meager supply of carrots and onions and set sail, not really knowing where we are going. Just knowing that we didn't want to stay. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We were enjoying Seychelles, leisurely exploring the islands and beaches - this time so called “creme de la creme” La Digue. With favorable winds we come back to main island Mahe, and capital Victoria - it’s time for us to renew our visas and do some paperwork duo to boat import - and it’s just not going well. Things are way more complicated and expensive to what was anticipated, and there’s a week of a good wind taking us to our next destination Tanzania, so we decide to roll with punches and just go. Together with Sailing Zatara. So… we will see you in Tanzania, but for now - join us in Seychelles ;) Thanks so much for watching 🙏 Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥 We do our best to keep you entertained and informed and if you find it fun, enjoyable or informative, consider becoming part of our team and ➡️ join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/svaquarius ➡️ want to support us, but not sure about long term commitment? What it’s Like Sailing to a Remote Island Paradise in the Bahamas | Harbors Unknown Ep. 64 This week we’re sailing to a remote uninhabited island paradise in the Bahamas, the Berry Islands. Crystal clear waters and white sand beaches all to ourselves. The waters surrounding these islands are VERY shallow so we’re really trying to arrive before dark. But first we have to stock up on some fresh food because there aren’t any stores where we’re headed. Settle in and see what boat life is like in this part of the beautiful Bahamas. If you enjoyed this video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below and be sure to subscribe to our channel! It really helps us out. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. A long day of sailing, a 45 minutes trip in an overfilled chicken bus, one hour taxi ride to get just 500US$ cash. Yes, our life in San Blas paradise is wonderful, but one day we had to come down to the earth and think how we can get cash. San Blas (Kuna Yala) is a true paradise – did you ever see ATMs in paradise? So to get cash we had to sail to the mainland, back to civilisation. We arrived to Linton Bay and should go to Portobelo… But in the reality everuthing was not so easy… By the way, ATMs here at the Atlantic coast of Panama are so rare because they get frequently robbed. If you want to come to San Blas and cruise here stock up very well with cash. Later on we met here again our friends from Life on Jupiter and had a adventurous trip through a small channel in the mangroves. You might remember them our film “The ultimate performance cruising catamaran. The most affordable, comfortable and fast sailing cats” https://youtu.be/2paM4zxnf_o. They are sailing on a Mumby aluminium catamaran. Ang YESSS! We bought a new dinghy – a perfect light weight (as it should be on a performance sailing catamaran) Caribe dinghy. This is the life we want to share with you. Making travel documentaries. Yes, there are so many sailing videos. In our films we show you not only the daily cruising life. But countries we explore. People we meet. Local culture and island life. Simple and healthy living. Music, cuisine, crafts, locals artists. We will be happy if our videos inspire you to explore a different way of living. Welcome to the first part of the story of our Atlantic crossing, South Africa to Brazil (Part 1) This is the first week or so of the trip after leaving SA and their were times that we thought we wouldn’t make it!!!😫 We provisioned the boat in the weeks leading up to our departure, watched for a good weather window and tried to prepare ourselves mentally for what was to come. Little did we know we were about to enter the scariest 72 hours of all of our lives!!! Autopilot failure, Steering failure, banging and crashing, and all round fear. The first 2 days after departure were fine and we settled into our watches and were feeling quite confident, but then the sea state started to build and the storms arrived - we chose to go off of our originally planned track because of the sea state and the fact that we are a catamaran. But this just meant that the storms forced us north instead of the planned westward track, which kept us close to the African coast and stuck in the storm conditions. The details are all in the video! We made it through, somehow, were not put off the plan to continue sailing, although it has cemented the fact that none of us are fans of big passages. Watch the video to see a bit of our 72hours where we thought we were going to die along with all the things that went wrong in that time!!😖

After leaving Broome and crossing 80 Mile Beach, we stop at Dolphin Island before sailing down Flying Foam Passage and into Dampier where we officially check into Western Australia. After calling the Police to get our passes scanned, we are told to STAY WHERE YOU ARE and a police lockup patrol wagon is sent to check us in! After finally being cleared in (having actually crossed 3 months prior), we check out the Red Dog Monument, wait an hour for a bus that was never coming, and celebrate with the Dampier Sharks AFL footy team celebrating the seasons final win! Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:29 Leaving West Moore Island 02:38 Dolphin Island 09:49 Police Check In 13:12 Red Dog Monument 14:24 The Bus That Never Came WHO ARE WE? We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. We are just an ordinary Aussie couple exploring what this great world has to offer and hope that we can inspire others just as we were by watching other YouTube channels to follow our dreams. #dampier #dampiersharks #seawind1260 #kimberley #circumnavigationaustralia #seawindcats
