In this Captain's Vlog I step away from the boat and drive 900 miles up to Canada from my land base in Northern California (I will discuss current gas price insanity). Along the way I'll do some camping and film some seals, but first I have to pass the Covid Test. Thanks for watching my non-nautical adventure! Well every sailor has their storm story and this is ours. 50-58 knots for just under two hours in the middle of the ocean. 58 knots is force 11 on the Beaufort Wind Scale, which is one notch under the first category for hurricane strength. It was quite an experience and not the fun kind. Both Mari and I knew - at the time - we could not make any mistakes. This video shows what happened and what tactics we used to deal with it. Enjoy!

#vela #pacifico #isolesocietà PREQUEL #14 DA BORA BORA A MAUPIHAA ERRATA CORRIGE - LA PASS DI MAUPIHAA E' LARGA 10 METRI. Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. In this episode, we discuss what to do about dirty seat cushions in your main salon. Prior to fixing some leaking windows on Paradox, (see EP-38) we would get water dripping from the cabin onto the seat cushions. This went on for several years with the previous owner and the tan fabric-covered cushions developed some stains. As an experiment, on our last trip, we took two bottoms and two tops home to wash. After soaking the bad spots in some stain remover and a good wash, they came out great. Getting the foam back into the cushions was a challenge. In the end, they turned out great. Eight more to go. Sounds like a nice winter project. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Bela and Mike

Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. This is a quick update to EP-41 which was all about cleaning the salon seat cushions on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45DS. But first, I would like to acknowledge Robert James Lattanzio, he is the newest supporter of this podcast. Thank you, Robert. The good news is that I have washed all of the cloth seat cushions and they have turned out great. A little bit of the water strains from the deck leaks are still visible, but all of the other dirt is gone. If you recall from episode 41, the most difficult part was getting the seat cushions back into the covers. The seat cushions are complex. They all have 2 or 3 compartments, into which a separate piece of foam is inserted. They are not just your simple rectangular, one compartment seat cushion. It took me anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to insert each piece of foam back into the covers. A few days after releasing the episode about the seat cushions, I received an email from Joe Hagen. Joe was a guest on this podcast back on episode 12. Joe runs Offshore Adventure Sailing, where he takes folks out on mutli-day sailing adventures. To learn more about Joe and Offshore Adventure Sailing, just give episode 12 a listen. Joe shared two tips: The first, using a lint roller to remove the accumulated “stuff” from seat cushions. The lint roller is a great tip. Having on on the boat is a great idea and we will be getting one for sure. The second tip was using silk wrap to help get the cushions back into the covers and to keep water out of the cushion material. This tip is a game-changer. Silk wrap is sold by Sailrite, a company that sells all sorts of “do it your self” products for the sailors. Sailrite has great how-to videos you can watch on all of their products including silk wrap. It’s worth the watch for sure. Check out their site at: https://www.sailrite.com/ Thanks again to Joe for taking the time to pass this great info along. Make sure you check out Joe’s Offshore Adventure Sailing site at: https://www.offshoreadventuresailing.com/ We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. In this episode, Mike and I discuss the last sail of the season I did with my son Jason on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45 DS. We arrived at the boat on Friday evening around 9:00 PM. It was Columbus Day weekend and the weather was supposed to be nice. We dropped the dock lines on Saturday morning around 10:00 AM and it was 45 degrees, with solid overcast skies with a 10-15 knot wind from the East. It was COLD! We sailed, all the way to the Newport bridge on one tack and past Newport into Long Island Sound. Where we experienced a nice ocean swell of 5-6 feet. All of a sudden Paradox felt small. We came back North via the West passage and arrived back at Bullock Cove, in the dark, around 8:00 PM. It was approximately a 40 nautical mile trip, the longest of the season. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Bela and Mike

Today’s episode was inspired by a listener. When Mike and I get together, to record a podcast, before we hit the RECORD button, we typically have a conversation about what's going on in our lives and the world. It’s basically, two good friends catching up. Back in EP 39, Mike and I did an experiment and we hit the record button as soon as our conversation started. We included this part of the conversation in the regular podcast. We received some nice comments from listeners who said they enjoyed the episode. In addition, John sent us a very nice email, he suggested we make our pre-podcast conversation part of the podcast. Thank you John for the thoughtful email and suggestion. Mike and I discussed John’s suggestion and we decided we will make separate episodes out of our pre-podcast conversations. That way, those listeners who are only interested in Sailing and Cruising can easily skip over them. Not sure what we are going to label these episodes, but for now, we will call them, “Pre-podcast discussion” Also, we are not sure how often we will release these episodes, as sometimes our conversations are not podcast-worthy. Hope you enjoy the episode! We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. In this video, we investigate a diesel smell coming from the Webasto diesel heater and replace the standard exhaust pipe with the marine exhaust silencer. Please be careful when working on these heaters and make sure your boat or vehicle is fitted with a carbon monoxide detector. The silencer while more expensive than the standard exhaust has really made a difference to the noise level of the heater. I would recommend you fit this, it's almost silent now from the outside. Also, make sure that you buy a marine version, as the ones for vehicles are not airtight and will let gasses escape into your boat. After sailing through the Gulgari Rip we found a safe anchorage close by. We then make our way further north in the Wessel Islands, checking out the anchorages as we go. We look for Aboriginal rock art and explore the stunning rock formations along the shoreline. Wendy makes enchiladas out of the one-month old canned savoury mince. Thanks for watching. The entrance to Fernandina Beach is wide, and the anchorage is spacious. But the skipper of a sailboat sans auxiliary must me mindful of the strong tidal currents that run through there. This time on Sailing Intermission we said good bye to some friends, we wish them fair winds and hope to meet again. Still hopeful that we'll be able to go cruising soon. The second AC unit is now installed and finally got our gooseneck back. Steve does a comparison between the Dometic and the Webasto units. We're super glad they both work and keep Isabella cool. Living life out of a Roof top tent. Could you do it? https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, we explore the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia in a Rooftop tent. During our time in Australia we have been exploring many different ways of alternative living. So far we have slept in a shed, a caravan, drove around in a converted van and now we have switched it all up for a four wheel drive and a rooftop tent! Not sure this is an upgrade though... #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #boatlife #vanlife #travelaustralia Grab some Sailing Nandji merch and help support our channel https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 If you are enjoying our videos, sign up to Patreon to help support us, our production and the adventures. After those 3 years we know better, so it was time we took on a new challenge: we added a little crew member to our boat family, meet Levi! Our goal is to circumnavigate the world on our 36ft Beneteau as a famliy. Sailboat life is super different from land life. It is fantastic and pretty rough at times. There's a truck fire at the marina, and help was a long way away. Get NordVPN with our exclusive deal: https://nordvpn.com/mjsailing Enter promo code MJSAILING for 61% off and one extra month for FREE! Thanks to NordVPN for sponsoring this video. This week talk about how it's so important to keep fire extinguishers on hand, as well as know where they are. We had a fire break out at the marina, potentially putting other boats in danger, and as I ran to the tent to grab our fire extinguishers, I could only find one. Getting back to boat work, Matt decides on the placement for our sink/cabinet in the master vanity, and preps the area for glassing. Continuing work in the head, I go through and make further attempts at fairing, this time in the shower. Using our Total Boat Polyester Fairing compound, I switch up to a 6" taping knife, which allows me to cover the surfaces much easier. We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! My attempt at cutting out the new BULKHEADS on our Lagoon 450 Catamaran turned into a major fail! Except when you screw up in the jungle, there's no Home Depot to buy more. The cardboard templates we made were sweet, but I didn't account for the most important thing. Measure once cut twice...you know... it cost me a few days of my life, 2 car rentals, and 4 trips from the coast to coast across Panama. And then someone stole my table under the boat...
