Kota Banjarmasin mendapat julukan sebagai kota seribu sungai dikarenakan banyak nya sungai di kota ini. Di Kalimantan Selatan ada ratusan sungai menjadi jalur transportasi penting hingga sekarang. Tempat wisata pun bertumpu pada sungai, seperti pasar terapung Muara Kuin di Kota Banjarmasin ini. Pasar terapung ini sangat unik penjualnya para ibu ibu naik jukung sebutan perahu dalam bahasa banjar ,sistem jual beli nya pun terkadang barter antar pedagang. Vanaf Tenerife steken we over naar La Palma, waar we in een vrijwel uitgestorven marina liggen. Met een huurauto gaan we op zoek naar de gevolgen van de vulkaanuitbarsting die hier 10 dagen geleden stopte. De sporen van de vulkaanuitbarsting die hier dik drie maanden geleden begon zijn overal pijnlijk zichtbaar. Hoewel het weer niet meezat en we veel regen en mist hadden, zagen we overal as en zwart zand liggen. Op zoek naar een beeld van de lavastroom stuitten we keer en keer op wegblokkades door de politie. We lunchen in een klein lokaal restaurantje waar we in gesprek raken met het personeel. Over de vulkaan, de uitbarsting, de herrie, de angst, de onzekerheid en de enorme schade. Ze lieten ons foto's en filmpjes zien uit eigen archief, met eigen commentaar. Met eigen emotie. Dan zie je pas hoe het de bewoners raakt en wat een impact dit heeft op het eiland en de gemeenschap. Nog steeds onder de indruk van deze ervaring varen we later door naar Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. This episode we push ourselves and go out in a force 6-7. The forecast was only set for a 4-5 However as soon as we left the marina the boat was heeling over without the sails up!!! We have not been out in conditions like this before so were nervous to say the least. How much sail do we put up? What if the engine cuts out? Will we get back on our birth? As you are aware we are still very new to sailing, but want to grow our experience and push ourselves to learn and overcome the worries... which we did. We experienced gusts up to 35KTS and a sustained 24kts. One of the issues with the river is the disturbance the land creates.. one minute we have 15kts the next its 25. This is the scary part as we can be set for a number but with it doubling in literally seconds as gusts tend to do it can be quite alarming. One thing the camera doesn't pick up is the water state, we had never seen the river like it with white caps lining the water and mini breaking waves. We had a fantastic sail in the end and were very pleased we did it. It enabled us to feel a great deal of confidence in our boat and our own capabilities. Just shows you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone! He who dares... wins. Thank you for watching Charlie and Carl xx

First few days of Dave's sabbatical is mostly building the new forecabin design. This is part of our 3 month refit rush to the water for our 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. In this episode, Mike and I discuss the C&D Canal and Chesapeake City, MD. Chesapeake City is a small town on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The population in the 2010 census was 673. The town was originally named by Bohemian colonist Augustine Herman the Village of Bohemia — or Bohemia Manor — but the name was changed in 1839 after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was built in 1829. The C&D Canal, as it is known, connects the Chesapeake Bay with the Delaware Bay. It makes the trip from NYC, Boston, or Philadelphia, to Baltimore or Washington several hundred miles shorter. Chesapeake City is located about ⅓ of the way from the Chesapeake to the Delaware Bay along the canal. In Chesapeake City, there is a nice bay to anchor in. With a Marina and restaurant with docks. The anchorage will hold about 5 or 6 boats, so it is not large. It is well protected from any wakes in the canal. The town is within easy walking distance and there are several nice restaurants and shops. WIth under 1000 residents, there are no big box stores or restaurant chains. It’s all local businesses. We also talk about what happened during the storm with other boats in the anchorage, why they called harbor patrol and TowBoatsUS, and why they reset the anchor during the height of the storm. Today we’re are going to talk about the new anchor chain I purchased and installed on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45 DS. As a reminder, we purchased Paradox in the Fall of 2020 and she came with 25 feet of anchor chain and 200 feet of ⅝ 3 strand nylon rode. After doing some reading and given the type of sailing we do, I decided on 100 ft of chain. The anchor windless is a Lewmar V2 with both a gypsy and a drum. On Lewmar winches there is a code stamped into the gypsy. The code on my gypsy is 002 which according to the Lewmar website means the proper chain is 10mm DIN 766 or ⅜ G4. This is interesting because the chain that came with the boat is 5/16 G4. The 5/16 chain seems to work OK in the windless, but I just deployed it once. You must be careful because the wrong size chain can jam or prematurely wear out the gypsy. So, I ordered ACCO brand ⅜ G4 anchor chain from Defender. Defender is a great place and I find they consistently have the best prices. There are lots of brands of anchor chain and in reading forums, ACCO seems to be one of the best. Seems like the big variable in anchor chain is the quality of the galvanization. So a good quality galvanization is important. The next thing I needed to figure out was how to get the anchor chain from the car to the boat and then onto the boat. 100 feet of ⅜ chain weighs about 160 pounds. What I came up with are using three 5gal pails to carry the chain. At Defender, we put about ⅓ of the chain in each pail. So each weighs just a bit over 50lbs. When I got to the marina, I was able to load all 3 pails into a cart and take them down to the boat. At the boat, I was able to get each bucket, one by one, onto the boat and forward to the anchor locker. I then, one pail at a time, flaked the chain into the chain locker. I then ran it through the anchor windless and attached the end to the anchor with a new shackle I purchased. I still need to splice the nylon rode to the end of the anchor chain. But for the time being, I secured the end of the anchor chain with a line to the eye hook in the anchor locker. I will splice the nylon rode to the anchor the next time I am at the boat. BTW, I did find 2 great YouTube videos on how to splice a line to an anchor chain. Today we are going to talk about our first family vacation on Paradox, our 2009 Hunter 45 DS. My wife and I, along with our son, his wife, and their 2 daughters, ages 5 and 7 spent a week on the boat in Narragansett Bay. It was an interesting week, as unlike all the other times we have been on the Bay, the typical afternoon sea breeze did not appear and we had 3 days of no wind. We had to get creative and we were sure glad our marina has a pool. It was the first time on a sailboat for my granddaughters, so it was a great week of learning new things and exploring for them. I even got them to understand “Red Right Returning”. In addition to motoring and sailing around the Bay, we took the high-speed ferry from Providence to Newport. We also visited the Blount Clam Shack in Warren, RI. Blount’s is one of those “must experience” places in RI. All in all, we have a great week with the family in Paradox! Thanks for listening! Our galley restoration continues. As we continued to move aft with our freshwater hose runs we had to figure out how to get from the galley through the bulkhead and into the aft locker where we are going to install our water pump and fresh water manifold. The challenge came when trying to get the hose under the old partially demolished ice box. We had no other option but to finish the job to open the space to run plumbing.
