Op Sint Maarten zoeken we een reparateur voor de saildrive, maar dat schiet niet erg op. We besluiten de saildrive te voorzien van de juiste olie, maken de motorruimte schoon en hopen er het beste van. Frank, een Duitse zeilvriend, vaart van af nu mee tot Sint Maarten. Samen gaan we op Martinique nog op zoek naar wat onderdelen, klaren uit en zeilen in de vroege ochtend richting Dominica. Op Dominica klaren we in en maken een vaartocht op de Indian River. Met een privé chauffeur maken we vervolgens een dagtocht over een deel van het eiland. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. We Harkenites have bunches of new ideas for equipment to help your boat work better and your sailing results improve. But over time we’ve discovered there’s occasionally a big difference between a really good idea and a really successful product. Around here, we’ve got lists of ideas we’ve been working on that for one reason or another will probably never make it to a store. Recently, we designed a few line guards. These are designed to prevent other lines from sliding in there and SNARLING up your sheet blocks. In boats where there is a lot of sheet on the floor and not very much foot room, like the Laser or the Sunfish, this can ruin your whole race. You never really get over that! We found out that these guards need a lot of customization to make them work perfectly—more than people like to confront when they buy something. We know these guards fit Harken ratchet blocks perfectly. They snap on and they stay on until you want to take them off. But sailors are different heights. Some hike harder than others. All this variation results in the need to customize the guards to meet individual situations. So rather than scrap these ideas, we’re giving ‘em away. Watch the video to see what’s involved. If you have a 3D printer, you can output a couple and try them out. We know they can help you get around the course faster—if you’re willing to put in the time to master them. And they’re free! Today we are going to 1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels 2. Do a full tour asking, “What would Sylvia say?” 3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier (Hint...privacy at the touch of a button, some things shouldn’t change and some things should) 4. Have a look at the used market for 3-5 year old comparables (This is a BIG field) 5. And finally give it a “Dave Score” and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts. (This gets harder as I am assimilated into sailing culture) As always, we have a wine pairing with our yacht of choice and this week we head across to the west coast of France and Lagoon’s HQ, Bordeaux, where we find Chateau Le Puy Emilien Bordeaux: Le Puy has a family legacy of wine-growing since 1610. Fifteen Amoreau generations have cultivated the land without ever using an artificial product. This non-filtered wine is produced from vines planted with 85% merlot, 7% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% malbec and 1% carmenere. Emilien is obtained by a 2-year decantation in foudres and used barrels. A Foudre is a generic French wine term used to describe a large wooden vat, which is between 20-120 hectolitres in size (e.g. 1 hectolitre = 100 litres). Since we have sailing, wine, and creative naval gazing, I felt it only appropriate to add a glimpse into the art of the region from which our guest yachts come, so stay with me to the end for a cultural cherry on top of our adventure today. Und wieder ein Vergleich. Diesmal aber wer schneller aufzubauen geht. Natürlich ist es noch davon abhängig wie viel Zubehör man noch zusätzlich gekauft hat. Auch die Erfahrung oder wie oft man das Aufbauen gemacht hat spielt eine Rolle. Aber am Ende geht es darum zu zeigen das egal für welchen aufblasbaren Kat man sich entscheidet mit ein bisschen Übung nicht länger als eine Stunde zum Aufbauen braucht. Ein eingespieltes Zweierteam könnte das ganze dann locker in 30-40 min schaffen.
