Designing a boat from a half-hull model is covered in full in this episode of the Art of Boat Building. Boat Builder, Bob Emser, discusses Nathanael Herreshoff's old master way of designing a boat straight from a wooden model. He shows us Capt. Nat Herreshoff "Offset Measuring Instrument" and his modern replica of one. Made from off the self materials Bob demonstrates how the offset device is use to take off the body plan measurement. Bob and Steve Denette have discussion on the layout of the new tender Victoria. We also go on a field trip to the Wooden Boat School where Paul Gartside, Naval Architect, teaches about spline weights. We then see the production and casting of the lead spline weights (Ducks) by a fellow design class mate, Matt Moeller. Well I had a little side project so I figure I do a video about it. In evaluating safety equipment, Reverie came with a LifeSling, if you do not what it is, it is a safety device that consists of a floatation device and a line. You use it in emergency situations when you have to recover a man overboard. Well back to Reverie, it had a LifeSling, but the bag was a complete disaster. In most instances people just throw the whole thing away and buy a new one; but when you are on a budget a $300 lifesaving is a little expensive, so in looking for options, I was able to find a good compromise to bring this safety piece of equipment back into service. We hadn't managed to have a good look at the hull since we lost the rudder in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. From the GoPro footage we took, there didn't appear to be any serious issues apart from the absence of one rudder but we needed to know what happened and were hoping we could find some clues as to what went wrong. We have tried many times, but learned that he has the wrong gear which has put him at a huge disadvantage. But, it makes the lobsters happy. It's a part of life on the Atlantic Ocean. Now that we are back from the Bahamas, the big question is, "what's next?" After some long conversations, Katy and I decided it was time to head back home for a while to visit our families, make some money, and rest from our adventure packed first year of traveling aboard our sailboat. This means finding a place safe enough that we feel comfortable leaving our beloved vessel for a number of months. This boat yard would also need to be "do it yourself" friendly because we do it all ourselves (we couldn't afford it otherwise), and Seawind has a list of projects to tackle. Indiantown Marina just east of Lake Okeechobee is 20 miles inland, well away from the vulnerable coastline, and protected from surge. The St. Lucie canal is how we will get there and this episode is all about the journey. Three days and two beautiful anchorages, both with stunning sunsets and serene sunrises. After what seemed like an eternity of motoring up the coast of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico we finally treated to some sailing on the Pacific Ocean. The experience was certainly worth the wait!
