Our first sailing passage in a while, the first for Marie in Australia. 105nm from Magnetic Island to Bowen. It was a dream passage from start to end, we lifted anchor at 1pm and dropped anchor at 3.30am, thats a 7kt average. We had optimum wind and sea state, so good that Marie even had a shower downstairs, a first ever for her while under sail. So good to be out of the marina and back exploring. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us. We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn. We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords. We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings. The Route du Rhum is a single-handed transatlantic sailing race which takes place every four years from St. Malo France to Guadalupe, and covers a distance of just over 3,500 nautical miles, or 6,500 kilometers. The current record is 7 days, 14 hours, 22 minutes, held by Francis Joyon on his 100 foot Ultime trimaran IDEC Sport. Francis is racing again this year to defend his title, but there are a couple of newer full-foiling Ultime front-runners who are currently in the lead – Edmund de Rothchild's Gitana 17 skippered by Charles Caudrelier and SVR Lazartigue skippered by Francois Gabart. Francois Gabart currently holds the solo around-the-world record of 42 days, 16 hours, 41 minutes, which is less than two days slower than the overall around-the-world record set by Francis Joyon and his crew on IDEC Sport. The key to Gitana and SVR Lazartigue’s blistering speed is their ability to fly above the water on foils, which reduces drag from the waves and water, and allows them to sail 10-20% faster in moderate wind conditions. But how exactly do these 100 foot Ultime monsters fly above the water for extended periods of time? These boats have numerous foils and appendages that stick down into the water, two on each hull to be precise. Lifting C or L-shaped foils and T-foil rudders have been seen on multihull floats for several years now, as we first saw in the 34th America’s Cup, and on Francis Joyon’s IDEC sport from the last Route du Rhum, but these generally aren’t sufficient for full-foiling in open ocean conditions. To stay balanced, the foils have to provide the exact amount of lift required to counter the heeling forces of the wind. To add ocean-going stability several of the Ultime trimarans have added a ray foil on the central hull daggerboard. The ray foil has an adjustable trailing edge which can alter the lift produced to match the conditions and keep the boat balanced. In moderate winds, it provides a substantial amount of lift, and as the wind increases the ray foil lift is reduced as a higher percentage of the boats weight is carried by the float foils. The ray foil lift can even be made negative to hold the centre hull down in very windy conditions! Even though the ray foil is adjustable, it is more like a trim setting and set for the average conditions at the time, and the boat is kept balanced in gusts and lulls by steering by steering up or down relative to a beam reach. These full-foiling monsters have the greatest advantage in moderate wind conditions, where a non-foiling boat would be sailing say 22 knots, and they are sailing 28 knots. As the wind and boat speed increases the advantages of full-foiling diminish as the boats approach the cavitation speed limit of the foils at around 50 knots, where the water literally boils around the foils, resulting in reduced lift, high drag, and even damage to the foils. #176 ✍️Au bout de 16 ans sur un bateau, nous pouvons affirmer être réellement autonome en électricité sur Black Lion. Cependant cette liberté énergétique n’est pas arrivée toute seule et il nous a fallu plusieurs années avant d’assimiler toutes les subtilités de notre installation. Par ignorance de débutants, sur notre premier catamaran, Pirates.com, nous avions tendance, par peur d’un black-out total, à changer nos batteries tous les ans. Une vraie galère et surtout un vrai budget ! Avec le temps, mon capitaine s’est aguerrit mais surtout à acquis les connaissances lui permettant de ne plus être stressé à la moindre baisse de tension. Avant d’en arriver au stade de zénitude à la consommation, nous sommes passés par doutes et questionnements. Quelles batteries pour combien de stockage ? Quels dispositifs de production ? Et enfin, quels appairages de confiance utiliser ? Tout ce cheminement d’apprentissage nous a guidé vers notre indépendance électrique. C’est ainsi, qu’aujourd’hui notre Catathai 40 est équipé de 800 Ampères AGM pour accumuler l’énergie. Celle-ci récupérée par nos 1000 Watts de panneaux solaire, divisés en trois packs pour plus de rentabilité, dont trois MPPT, régulent la charge. Pour les navigations, l’hydrogénérateur reste, malgré la fragilité de ses femelots, une petite merveille qui nous permet d’avoir l’esprit tranquille lorsque tous les appareils sont actifs. Et enfin, par mauvais temps, notre petite génératrice Yamaha n’a plus à faire ses preuves. Pour ce qui est de l’éolienne, après trois expériences obstinées, mon capitaine est enfin vacciné, ce procédé ne nous convient pas. Grâce à tout ce dispositif, frigidaire, congélateur, luminaires et ventilateurs peuvent sans soucis fonctionner sur du 220V, transformé depuis notre convertisseur branché en permanence. Pas de scrupule non plus à utiliser mon électro-ménager pour cuisiner ! Sur ce petit bilan électrique, nous nous préparons à bouger toujours sur un seul moteur, en direction de la Guadeloupe. Parce qu’évidement, Twin Disc se décharge de toutes responsabilité et notre problème reste le même ! Nous devons trouver à réparer…

We are in Antigua and it's just weeks away from Hurricane Season. Shayne has been asked to help deliver a Gunboat 68 from the Caribbean to France while Anna and the kids stay behind with Paikea. It means last minute repairs to the carbon solar panel bracket we put together in Cadiz, Spain. See our blog post here to see how we put the frame together. Due to time contraints we were unable to laminate the joins in Cadiz, instead they were just glued together with Spabond, a rubber toughened epoxy. The next step should have been to laminate the joins together but time and changing priorities have meant that it has been left on the "to do" list for far too long. Now Shayne needs to be properly laminate the joins together before it becomes a real problem while he is away. Scotland Bay is a quiet little bay just around the corner from Chaguaramas Bay. We decided to go there during the week as the weekends get quite busy with speed boats. It was such a breath of fresh air being able to drop anchor and be able to paddle board and explore around the boat. Chaguaramas Bay can be turbulent to say the least, power boats and speed boats wizz around the anchorage leaving some big wakes. Scotland Bay felt like we were in a different country, we didn't realise the constant noise around us in Chaguaramas - (because it is surrounded by working ship docks) until we got to experience the peace and quiet of Scotland Bay. We didn't realise how much we missed the sound of birds in the trees and not being smashed around by the wakes. Scotland Bay has brown water but it is pretty clear, when we explored the shore line we could see far down into the water. We saw some parrot fish and puffer fish. When we got back to Chaguaramas we noticed a bird on the shore that looked like it was battling to walk. Karen, Denver and Colben went over to investigate and noticed that there wa something very wrong with him. We got ahold of a local animal rescue organisation here in Trinidad called "Wake Up Call Shelter". Wendy was so helpful and came over straight away. Unfortunately she got back to us a few days later to tell us that the pelican didn't make it but she took care of him right up to the end ❤️

Juni 2022: wir segeln zu zweit mit einer Bavaria 38 (2008) von Murter nach Mali Losinj. von Marina Betina - Landin auf Pasman - Silba - Mali Losinj - Olib - Molat - IZ - Konoba La Spuz Sa: starteten wir erneut Richtung norden und segelten in das Bojenfeld von Landin auf Pasman. SO: Am nächsten morgen motorten wir erst mal weiter Richtung Norden und ab Nachmittag kam Wind, der uns bis hoch nach Ist schob. Da ein angepeiltes Bojenfeld laut Navily nicht eröffnet wurde, düsten wir gleich weiter nach Silba. Dort gingen wir an die Boje und waren begeistert von der türkisenen Bucht. MO: schiebt uns der Wind weiter nach Mali Losinj. Leider waren riesige Wellen hinter uns her und ließen das Boot arg schaukeln. Aber wir ankerten und badeten noch kurz vor Mali Losinj und liefen in den Stadthafen. Dort versaute ich ja meinen ersten Anleger mit den Jungs 2017 gehörig und somit war ich sehr aufgeregt. Aber alles klappte und von der Bar am Rande der Stege wurde uns gleich ein Mojito aufs Boot gebracht. Das gefiel uns super: Neben uns lag sogar das Schiff "Mojito" mit dessen Münchner Crew wir richtig Spaß hatten. DI: Morgens um 9 wollten wir durch die Brücke. Ich hoffte auf geringere Wellen als am Vortag, wenn wir uns im Lee der Insel wieder zurück bewegen. Es war zwar kaum Wind aber wir segelten trotzdem so gut es ging und warfen den Anker im Norden von Olib. Ein Traum-Anker-Spot, wenn kaum Wind ist! Das sah ich selber mal in einen Youtoube-Video. Ich war happy, dass ich es ausprobierte, denn es gefiel uns wahnsinnig gut! MI: Segelten wir Amwind an Olib vorbei und in die große Bucht von Molat im Süden. DO: Wir motorten überwiegend, machten bei IZ einen Bade Stopp und segelten ab da Amwind Richtung Murter. Genau genommen wollten wir in der Konoba La Spuz. Sie macht ihrem Ruf alle Ehre ;) FR. tankten wir gleich in der Früh um 9 und legten uns zum Baden und Packen noch mal in eine Nahe gelegen Bucht. Das war meine 4. Woche Urlaub am Stück. Alles war gut! Show me your Monkey! What a day of firsts. There is no dipping your toe in the pool for us we dive all in and figure it out as we go. This is the first time we have driven the boat. The first time we have charted and dealt with tides, currents, and shoaling. First time we have anchored the boat. Most importantly, the first time we have slept on anchor 😬 And you know what…to our surprise we did a pretty wicked job! All the prior preparation really paid off and we are out of the gates and running. The adventure of what awaits us is so exhilarating. There is this major feeling of relief we have right now as we make our way north on the ICW and into the North Atlantic in our Hunter. However, nothing could have prepared us for the unbelievable sights on our first night at anchor. Schön, dass du hier bist! Wir, Emely und Tjark, haben uns den Traum vom eigenen Segelboot erfüllt, eine Maxi 84, relativ spontan und ohne das ganz große Geld. Wir nehmen dich mit auf unsere Reise von blutigen Anfängern zu hoffentlich passablen Seglern. Getauft wurde sie auf den stolzen Namen Meera. Nach dem ersten Winterlager mit der Überarbeitung des Unterwasserschiffs, sind wir 2022 in unsere erste Segelsaison gestartet. Also kommt mit auf unsere Reise die Welt zu erkunden, für den Anfang erstmal die Ostsee. Da wir noch echte Rookies sind, müssen wir erstmal lernen zu Segeln und was es heißt abhängig von der Natur zu sein. Bevor es in die weite Welt hinaus geht, liegt noch ein Berg an Arbeit vor uns. Wir haben Ende September und ich liege mit der Offline in La Coruna. Nessie kommt wieder an Bord und wir erleben entspanntes Segeln in Galizien und verlängern den Sommer... Nach einer schweren Krebserkrankung starte ich einen Neuanfang. Ich möchte meinem Leben eine neue Richtung geben und steige aus. Ich nehme mir eine unbefristete Auszeit unter Segeln. Dies ist die Geschichte meines Segeltörns. Estate 2022 - 123 giorni di mare, 3130 miglia percorse con il nostro “Ronik”, assieme ad ospiti ed amici per provare le emozioni che solo a bordo di una barca a vela possiamo vivere. Amiamo viaggiare ed ogni luogo che visitiamo è sempre una piacevole scoperta. La vela è viaggio, il viaggio è scoperta e conoscenza, la conoscenza è cultura, non è importante la destinazione ma il viaggio stesso! Vivere per viaggiare e non viaggiare per vivere! ⛵️ L'amore per la vita, la curiosità di conoscere il mondo, la gioia di vivere le emozioni e il benessere della tranquillità; sono solo alcune delle esigenze che ci hanno spinto a decidere una "vita in barca a vela".
