Les Kunas locaux passent au bateau l’un après l’autre pour nous offrir des pièces d’art fait à la main, du poisson frais et même des bananes ! Ils entretiennent aussi l’île tout près, parce qu’à notre grand bonheur, elle est parfaitement propre. Welcome back to our sailing adventure aboard Polaris! In this episode, we set sail from the enchanting island of Canna, cruising around Neiss Point Lighthouse, and heading towards Loch Dunvegan on the stunning Isle of Skye. Join us as we embark on another captivating journey filled with breathtaking sights and intriguing discoveries. As we navigate the calm seas, we are blessed with the most awe-inspiring sunrise over the Small Isles. The golden hues paint the sky, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for our voyage. However, our journey takes an unexpected twist as we encounter a magnetic anomaly that plays havoc with our ship's compass. We share the challenges and adjustments we make to ensure a safe and accurate navigation despite this magnetic interference. Our destination is the magnificent Loch Dunvegan, situated on the northwestern corner of the Isle of Skye. Here, we find the renowned Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral seat of the MacLeod Clan for over 800 years. We anchor just off the castle, immersing ourselves in its rich history and legends. One particular story that captures our imagination is that of the fairy flag of the MacLeod Clan, said to possess mystical powers and protect its owners. We delve into the lore surrounding this cherished artifact and learn about its significance to the clan's heritage. During our stay near Dunvegan Castle, we are delighted to once again encounter a vibrant wildlife neighborhood. Seals gracefully swim in the surrounding waters, gannets soar overhead, and cormorants perch along the shoreline. We capture stunning footage of these incredible creatures, showcasing the diverse marine life that calls this area home. We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence. Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter. Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker. We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

20 AÑOS DE LA CATÁSTROFE ECOLÓGICA DEL PRESTIGE. El 13 de noviembre, delante de las costas gallegas, en A costa da Morte, en medio de un fuerte temporal, el petrolero monocasco PRESTIGE sufría una rotura de su casco. En su interior transportaba 77000 toneladas de petróleo. Las causas del accidente se especularon entre un golpe con un contenedor o unos troncos a la deriva. Días antes un buque que transportaba troncos perdió parte de su carga y sí sería plausible esta situación. Aunque los expertos apuntan a una fatiga de los materiales del casco y al fuerte temporal. Para mí, la marea negra del PRESTIGE fue un cúmulo de desaciertos, errores y mentiras. Comenzaban los tiempos de la información de internet y los medios de comunicación no podían mentirnos en sintonía con los políticos tan fácilmente. Nos contaban que las playas estaban limpias, perfectas, que no pasaba nada, que solo salían unos hilillos… Ningún poder estatal tomaba una decisión con valentía, con coraje, con sentido común. La opción más coherente habría sido traer el barco a un lugar seguro de la costa y precintarlo. Pero claro, nos habríamos cargado unas cuantas comarcas y la opinión pública se habría puesto en su contra y las urnas habrían mermado. Daos cuenta de que si se llega a elegir esta opción, no conoceríamos qué hubiera sucedido si escogiera alejar el barco, que es el caso. Ninguna autoridad se atrevió. Eligieron barrer debajo de la alfombra. Todo esto ocasionó una catástrofe histórica y os voy a contar mi opinión y lo que supuso para mí. Yo me encontraba en esos tiempos con una rodilla rota y con el ánimo un poco bajo, la verdad. Para mí, el mar, las rías, Galicia, son mi hogar, mi recurso económico, mi vida. Ver toda mi casa, mis rocas, mi arena, mi agua salada, teñida de un asqueroso, triste, viscoso y maloliente color negro me partieron el corazón. Me empezaron a caer las lágrimas como si el mayor ser querido se hubiera muerto. Una atmósfera de tristeza nos inundó a toda la sociedad. Ante la pasividad de las autoridades, que no movieron un dedo, la sociedad gallega, sobre todo las gentes de la mar se unieron y se pusieron a recoger el “chapapote” de motu propio. Sin ayuda, sin herramientas específicas y en precario. Marineros y armadores con sus manos y sus barcos, con trueles, horquillas, etc. empezaron a recoger esta semilla del mal. Yo, con mi bastón, me veía impotente, no podía ayudar. Mi tierra estaba negra y yo no podía hacer nada por solucionarlo. Me puse en contacto con las cofradías. Les dije que estaba cojo, que caminaba con un bastón, que no podía cargar pesos, pero que era patrón mayor de Cabotaje con muchos años de experiencia y tenía capacidad para patronear cualquier tipo de embarcación. De este modo le podía dar descanso a los agotados patrones. Me respondieron dándome las gracias, pero mi situación de baja era incompatible. No sabéis lo que fue para mí no poder ayudar en este cometido. Siempre digo que una noticia transmitida por un político o por la prensa nunca es la realidad. En todos y cada uno de los sucesos que he vivido en primera persona y luego e visto en prensa, radio o televisión, nunca son la verdad. El caso del Prestige es mi ejemplo más claro. Decían que no pasaba nada y sin embargo te acercabas a los puertos y los marineros tenían sus ropas de aguas naranjas y amarillas teñidas de negro. Las planeadoras y barcos de pesca prácticamente inservibles. Lo que habrán sufrido mis colegas para dejarlos limpios de nuevo. Un día me acerqué a las costas de Bayona y se me rompió el alma. Rocas totalmente negras, pájaros muertos, olas negras que dejaban adivinar la viscosidad de esta asquerosa peste. Me volvieron a caer las lágrimas. Este sentimiento nunca lo olvidaré. Espero que jamás vuelva a suceder. Lo más vergonzoso empezó a suceder después. El gobierno necesitaba un lavado de imagen, un lavado de cara. Empezó una segunda fase en el desastre del Prestige, la desidia. Tanto el gobierno autonómico como el gobierno central, que en aquellos tiempos eran del mismo partido, empezaron a comprar voluntades. Dieron indemnizaciones a diestro y siniestro. A cada marinero le daban una prestación más alta que el jornal que podrían haber sacado si estuvieran trabajando y a los armadores les daban un dineral por tener sus barcos amarrados, ya que no se podía pescar debido a la contaminación de las aguas. Se estaba mejor en la tasca jugando a las cartas que faenando. De hecho se dejó de recoger chapapote. En ese momento hubo otro movimiento social y vino gente de toda España a ayudar. Incluso desde el extranjero. Fue loable. Lo que no lo fue, fue ver a la mayoría de los marineros gallegos disfrutando de sus pensiones en la taberna. Este comentario se que va a levantar ampollas, pero esto no me lo han contado, lo he vivido.

Episode 7: Bronze magic Our brass Instruments needed serious cleaning and we decided to run a test of 2 different solutions. One was Ketchup to polish and clean the brass. The second was a mixture of Hydrochloric Acid and flour. There is a clear winner here and it was a fun test to run while also improving the look of our boat. It doesn’t take much sometimes, a few small boat projects here and there to beautify our space. We also went for a walk to expel some pent up energy and found serenity in the Montenegro woods by an ancient church. Picked up a dead minnow who had probably been chased up there trying to escape being eaten only finding himself in another sad situation.
