The Route du Rhum is a single-handed transatlantic sailing race which takes place every four years from St. Malo France to Guadalupe, and covers a distance of just over 3,500 nautical miles, or 6,500 kilometers. This year’s event attracted a record fleet of 138 boat in six classes, including a record number of full-foiling boats that fly above the water. The previous record set in 2018 was 7 days, 14 hours, 22 minutes by Francis Joyon on his 100 foot trimaran IDEC Sport. Francis raced again this year to defend his title, but was overtaken by some newer full-foiling boats, including Edmund de Rothchild’s Gitana 17 skippered by Charles Caudrelier. The key to blistering speed is their ability to fly above the water on foils, which reduces drag from the waves and water, and allows them to sail 10-20% faster in moderate wind conditions. Previous generations of ocean-racing trimarans like IDEC Sport had foils in their floats and T-foil rudders, which provided some lift, but generally didn’t lift the entire boat out of the water. Some boats with this foil configuration, as we first saw in the 34th America’s Cup, do lift the entire boat out of the water, but this requires incredible concentration by the crew, which is fine for short day races, but not for longer ocean races which last several days. To stay balanced, the foils have to provide the exact amount of lift required to counter the heeling forces of the wind. To add ocean-going stability several of the Ultime trimarans added a ray foil on the central hull daggerboard. The ray foil has an adjustable trailing edge, like the foil on this Moth sailing dingy, which can alter the lift produced to match the conditions and keep the boat balanced. The ray foil can carry anywhere from 80% of the weight of the boat in lighter or downwind conditions to providing negative lift in brisk reaching conditions. Even though the ray foil is adjustable, it is more like a trim setting and set for the average conditions at the time, and the boat is kept balanced in gusts and lulls by steering by steering up or down relative to a beam reach. The advantage against partial-foiling boats like IDEC Sport diminishes as the boat speed increases. IDEC Sport in its non-foiling 2016 configuration still has faster 24 hour runs than the full-foilers, but that was in far winder conditions, when the full-foilers would have needed to slow down to prevent foil cavitation, which happens at around 50 knots of boat speed. The full-foilers have the greatest advantage in moderate wind conditions, where a non or partial foiling boat would be sailing say 25 knots, and they are sailing 31 knots, which we saw a lot of in this race. In the end high average speed is what wins races, and by the time the full-foilers were approaching Guadalupe, they had created a significant gap of more than 650 nautical miles or 1,200 kilometers over the older generation boats. Foils can actually slow you down in lighter conditions, like Charles Caudrelier on Gitana experienced on the leeward side of Guadalupe, when he was creeping along at 2.5 knots, while Francois Gabart on SVR Lazartigue chased him down at 28 knots. Despite that frustratingly slow spot, Charles still maintained an average speed of 21.6 KT compared to Francis Joyon’s 19.4 KT on IDEC Sport four years earlier. This was enough to set a new Route du Rhum record of 6D 19H 47M, smashing IDEC Sports record by more than 18 and a half hours! Remarkably, despite lots of ocean racing experience on crewed boats, this was also Charles Caudrelier’s first solo ocean race, and you wouldn’t know it by his success. This fact must be bittersweet for Francois Gabart on SVR Lazartigue, who was the favoured winner in 2018, but was overtaken by Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport in the final miles of the race. Francois Gabart also holds the solo around the world record, so Charles Caudrelier overcame some very significant competition. Still, foiling or not, these Route de Rhum sailors are single-handing these massive boats for days on end, at speeds that few of us can comprehend. With the help of two close friends and my youngest son, we moved While One from Coral Gables up to Titusville. We made several stops along the way including No Name Harbor, Marine Stadium Park, Lake Worth (Palm Beach), Stuart, Fort Pierce and ultimately Cape Canaveral. We had a scare with our first squall (would our stock anchor hold???) and had a long visitation from a school of dolphins. We finally said goodbye to Croatia this week and decided to sail to Albania. We've heard mixed reviews about Albania. Some people say to stay away, and some say it's incredible, so we had to see for ourselves. I'm always excited to learn more about a new area and share it with all of you! It's been wonderful having my parents along for the ride for the past week or so. We were passing Kotor, Montenegro on the way so naturally we had to stop and do a few of our favorite things. In this episode on board our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran while sailing up in Maine, Greyson discovers the joys of eating lobster. He wasn't sure if he should eat the ones he made friends with. But in the end, he thought it was the coolest thing EVER! "Mommy's been holding out on me. This is DELICIOUS! Where has lobster been all my life? I've never tasted anything so delicious in my entire life!" In all his 7 years. We also sailed with Frik and Petro from Sailing Sisu for a while. Watching them disappear into the fog was awesome. But seeing them on the other side was even better. Greyson had some hands-on time at the Marine Science Center in Stonington and saw two super rare blue lobsters. Supposedly, this genetic mutation affects one in a million lobsters. Lastly, Jeff and Greyson learned to speak "seal". They said, in Seal language, "get into the water!" And they did. We head down the Florida coast to visit friends, replace yet another prop seal, replace our grilling setup and install a hydrofoil on Imps' outboard engine, to help her get on plane. The prop seal is very bad news. This is going to be an expensive, ongoing issue until we can afford to replace the prop shafts. You cannot use a regular propane tank on a Magma BBQ, and a hydrofoil wont help your outboard if your dinghy isn't set up right. In this episode we share with you a little three hulled surprise that kept us busy in New Zealand for the summer. Our 17yr old son was given a 31ft Newick Trimaran that had been damaged by a tornado a few years ago and sat in the boatyard for over 7 years. At the tender age of 17 this was an incredible opportunity that was given to him but of course with limited experience and money, it was also very challenging for him to take on a project like this. We were happy to help him with the project, dedicating all our free time helping him with the repairs to make this project possible for him. We are very proud of how much hard work he has put in and his dedication to be working and earning money during the week to cover the cost of repairing his boat and spending every weekend working on his boat. Taking any opportunity to get out Sailing Swallow

Ep 1: Our decision to buy a sailing yacht wasn't an easy one. We'd never owned a boat before and although not novice sailors, the process of selecting the type and style of yacht to suit our purpose was immersive, exciting and daunting. Following our somewhat painful decision to leave work behind us and seek a change of direction, this new project would focus mind and effort on creating a floating home away from home to take us on a new journey. Before heading South and the Long Way Down to the Med through France, we had to get the new addition to our family northward to Yorkshire from Essex. Then the hard work started. The yacht is a Southerly 115, series two built in 1994 by Northshore. The swing keel design allows this boat to sail close hauled with keel fully deployed, run with the wind faster with keel half way up and negotiate shallow water with keel fully retracted into the hull, which also allows drying out on mud banks or beaches - without falling over. We've tested this and confirm it works - but that's another story... This first episode covers the time from buying the boat to her being almost ready for the start of our journey from Yorkshire, through France via Paris, to the Mediterranean Sea. Day 6 - Route du Rhum 2022 - Heading south to the trade winds! Bouncy all day and night. Tired but spirits are high! A few issues with the instrument computer that show the load… But Boris is working on it and trying to fix it. His thoughts go out to Fabrice Amedeo, as they were Whatsapping moments before there was an explosion and fire on his boat, and had to get rescued. We are glad that Fabrice is OK and our thoughts go out to him and his team who lost the boat. Boris has finally gotten some rest and has past the Azores, and is on his way to Guadeloupe!”

He is finally relaxing a little after the cold front and the issue with the J2. After another cold front coming up, he will sail through a no wind zone, right after a high pressure zone.
