The scenery was beautiful (as is the entire Pacific Northwest), and the interesting places like the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology featuring a whale skull the size of Katy, was really cool to see. We shove off for our first Cape rounding (Cape Blanco) and cross over into Northern California, with our bow pointed at Eureka. In Eureka we have some of the best oysters to date, and from a recommendation of a friend, soak our weary bodies in the hot tubs and saunas of Cafe Mokka. Our next destination is San Francisco and it would take roughly 48 hours. With our fuel tanks topped up, we leave Eureka for a motorboat ride around Cape Mendocino, and are surrounded by Humpback Whales swimming alongside Southern Cross. Sabina und ich montieren gemeinsam Decksbeschläge ab und erleben eine böse Überraschung Aus alten Lärchenholzdielen entsteht die Unterkonstruktion des neuen Daches Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei generalüberholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Hier zur Playlist dieser für ein Segelboot außergewöhnlichen Reise quer durchs Mittelmeer und über die europäischen Binnenwasserstraßen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, und der Refit hat bereits begonnen. The rudder is getting closer to actually being fitted! The first of the rudder irons is fitted, I turn up the bronze bearing pieces for the lower 'shoe' bearing and bore the hole in the rudder to fit that. Along the way, I get the new through hull and seacock for the salt water intake fitted. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build. One of our biggest jobs was to repair our 9m carbon fibre boom. In the last couple of videos we cut the boom in 2 pieces, and made a mould of the profile so that we could start building a sleeve which we then used to glue the boom back together in a straight line.
