What do we do while living and travelling on our sailboat full time? Follow us every week for our real life sailing adventures around the world & off grid living. Today we are anchored ⚓near the mesmerizing and unique Inland Sea of Gozo, a hidden beach behind the massive cliffs. It is real life experience that we could just not miss during our sail ⛵to the little sister island of Malta. But it is not the only place we discover today. Just a stone’s throw away and hidden in the rugged coastline is the Blue Hole of Malta where the girls get to swim. This is where we spend the afternoon to escape the heat. Just below the water surface is an arch leading to the open sea and on the other side. But soon we have lift the anchor because the weather is about to change. So Enrique and Michi lift the anchor and I get busy and prepare some food to keep the moral of the crew up. Later that day we are sailing past an armada of boats coming back from several bays around the islands to return to their berths in the marinas. But we are already on the way to a new and spectacular anchorage. Yet before we arrive we exchange some important facts about food.

It provides a great atmosphere for cruisers and tourist as it boarders a popular anchorage and you can pull your dinghy/power boat right up to the beach and enjoy volleyball, stingrays, and fresh conch salad. Would highly recommend checking this place out! 0:36 Removing the straps that hold the mainsail flaked nicely to the boom. 1:36 I pull the slack out of the main halyard and keep tension while Andre clips the shackle onto the main sail, so that the line doesn't get snagged on the spreaders. 1:51 Our water maker intake is Tee'd off from the same seacock/thru hull valve as our engine raw water cooling system. So we always want to make sure we have the water flowing towards the engine when we are underway. Even though we aren't intending on using the engine today, we switch it over in case we need it in a pinch! 2:32 We have our first reef in the main today (the blue line taut at the clew), the loose black line just above this is our second reef line. 3:02 I raise the main sail and slack the main sheet while Andre starts to pull the anchor. I let the boom swing freely so the sail luffs, preventing wind from catching and starting to sail before we're ready. 3:57 Andre continues to pull our 6 ton vessel towards the anchor. We currently have a 45lb Mantus anchor and chain intended for a 50 foot catamaran (130 feet of 3/8" chain) on our 34 foot monohull :D GO DRE GO 5:56 Dre needs a small assist on the last bit here, to help dislodge the anchor. So, I sheet in the main sail and fall off from the wind slightly to begin sailing upwind and help him tug it out. With no engine to assist, this is a slow and steady process :D. 9:42 With one reef in the main, we don't have quite enough windage power to bring us around. So we set up the pull a small amount of headsail to give us an extra push. 10:15 We've been having issue with our furling line spooling unevenly and over riding. So we pull it out just a pinch to bring us around, until I can get on the bow to guide the furling line through to spool evenly and get the entire sail out. 14:20 I very carefully apply pressure to the line in order to guide it evenly onto the drum. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Well, now that Matt has glassed in our molds for the flush hatches, we can finally add in the last bulkhead in the port hull. This intersects the middle of the aft berth, and also lines up close to where the inner hull wall (or back of the cockpit storage) will be. While Matt is getting that bonded into place, as well as a shelf, which will hide some of our conduit, I continue to fair out spaces in the starboard hull, closer to the master berth. But, I'm quickly taken away from that job after Matt has finished his part. Because it is usually my duty to do the finishing work (I have the patience for it), I'm sent to put the last layer of glass on bulkhead 7, to wrap in the unidirectional and give the last bit of strength. And even though it's been 4 months since I've last glassed anything, I think I did a pretty good job. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted.
