In this episode we sail into Italian waters, visiting the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Vulcano is the island that volcanoes are named after. Ancient Romans believed that this small island was the chimney of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. Here we find hot springs under the sea, in the shallow water close to the beach. With the forecast only showing 5 knts for day 5 no one expected much of the medal series, however none of this turned out to be true. With strong winds and high swell, the medal series couldn’t be more exciting! The idea of the medal series is simple 3 races in an elimination format, the first 2 to cross the finish line advance to the next final. With High speeds and no room for error the racing was intense, but this didn’t keep Pilar La Madrid and Frenchman Nicolas Goyard away from their gold medal.

My dad visited this week and did a load of little jobs for me that have been hanging around for a while getting on my nerves - woohoo! The cold weather has hit hard with temperatures in minus figures - and my central heating chose this week to pack up, just great!! Better get that fire on.

Of all the island’s of the Azores, Flores was Janna’s dream destination. Could we or could we not? That was constantly the question as Hurricane Lorenzo had struck Flores so bad, making it impossible for us to go with Thula. And we saw the aftermath - an almost completely destroyed harbor! So do what? Very unsustainably hopping on a plane the first time in years to not miss this green nature paradise. Oh, what we would have missed if we had left this out! Astonished to find a seemingly untouched green paradise this close to Europe with magnificent hiking trails above clouds, streams ending in crashing waterfalls to bathe in. Sparkling, colorful lakes…and almost untouched and laid back – just our taste. Our retirement spot found? Check it out and fall in love yourself.

Heroes del Mar takes children from Baja's small local fishing villages and gives them experiences showing them that they can make a difference to their communities, the ocean, and themselves. Thank you to PADI and Divers Alert Network, who made it possible to take 14 children who once barely knew how to swim and make them into divers ready to protect the ocean. So they aren’t really aliens, it’s the red sand forts that sit in the middle of the Thames estuary. They were however just one of the things that we saw on the first part of our journey down to the Solent. We had this adventure in the summer but its taken us ages to pull all the film clips together and bring them together in a series of short films. Not helped by the fact that the cameras etc kept breaking but we will tell you more about that as the series evolves. We are going to put out a new film every day over Christmas to tell you this story and today you watch us travel from the river Medway down to Dover. This week I thought I'd give you a closer look into the world of sailing. We're traveling from Athens and Corfu, Greece to some of the other Ionian Islands and I've been asked to explain a little more about the ins and outs of being out on the water. I also give you a glimpse of the day-to-day life of being out here. From knot races to dice games to just relaxing, getting where we're going is some of what I enjoy the most. It's always nice to have good people to share it with too! We met a couple from Romania and another couple from Germany and were able to get to know them and learn more about their cultures. Sailing down the East coast of Italy we have found very little shelter from the wind and swell! Which is sometimes a problem if a big storms coming! so this week after a rolly few days at anchor and no shelter for hundreds of miles, we finally take shelter in a little marina in Fano, which actually turned out really nice! We did shopping, laundry, found the all important gas for cooking, checked out AND I actually managed to get a good nights sleep after a very long glorious walk in the rain! who could ask for more! IN THIS VIDEO After 6 years of ownership, we sadly parted ways with Cloud Chaser, our 1984 Catalina 30'. The amount of learning and knowledge she provided us over the years will serve us well when we transition to our Balance 482 next summer. She was a bit tired when she came into our life, but hopefully we breathed some new life into her, and her future owner(s) will enjoy her as we did for many more years to come. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, Sold Everything that we owned, Shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa, flew to Cape Town, South Africa airport, to explore South Africa including an amazing safari, touring around Cape Town, move onto a Balance 482 Catamaran, then sailed to St Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha, Brazil, Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French), St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, Eleuthera, Anegada, Bahamas, Cape Canaveral, St. Augustine Florida, USA, Matthews Virigina, Zimmerman's marine for a haul out, and more! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s.
