In this episode, (Ep. 4) the little dinghy «Why Not» proves to be a dream to row—but let’s face it, sometimes you just need a bit of extra push. That’s where «René» comes in: a charming 1972 Yamaha outboard motor, bought online for just 500 Norwegian kroner (about 50 dollars). The seller promised a refund if it didn’t work. It didn’t. But instead of sending it back, I decided to take on the challenge. With zero engine knowledge, lots of fiddling, and help from a boat-building expert, I set out to bring the little wonder back to life. Did I succeed? In this episode, watch the adventure unfold as we attempt to restore «Johan René»—a tiny but stubborn outboard with a big personality! 🌺 Our Journey BareBare is a Wharram Tiki 38, a Polynesian-inspired double canoe that we built ourselves and shipped across the ocean. 🙏 Thank You for Your Support! Rot, Repairs & Rum - A day of boat repairs, rookie mistakes, and well-earned Mai Tais at the yacht club—where sailors, locals, and tourists come together as the sun sets over Bora Bora. (Ep. 3) In this episode, we’re in Fare, shopping at our favourite store—Huahine Import—before tackling a critical repair. The rot in BareBare’s beams needs urgent attention before it spreads! After a long day of sanding, gluing, and improvising with baby powder (yes, really!), we treat ourselves to Happy Hour at the yacht club. As the sun sets between the iconic peaks of Bora Bora, we share stories, laughter, and a few strong Mai Tais with old friends—like Ingrid, a true island legend. The night unfolds with lanterns, live music, and the warmth of sailors, locals, and travellers alike. Of course, no project is complete without a few rookie mistakes… like filming the ceiling instead of our work! But that’s life at sea—improvisation, resilience, and rolling with the mishaps. 🔜 Next time: We bring our little 1972 Yamaha outboard, Johan René, back to life! 🌺 Our Journey BareBare is a Wharram Tiki 38, a Polynesian-inspired double canoe that we built ourselves and shipped across the ocean. 🙏 Thank You for Your Support! No Rudders - No Worries – Repairing BareBare (Ep. 2) 🚤⛵ No rudders, no engine – just wind, oars, and a bit of luck! In this episode, we embark on a challenging yet breathtaking journey through one of the world’s most stunning lagoons. The first stretch goes smoothly—until we need to turn... Just when things seem impossible, unexpected help arrives in the form of Manea and Nahima, sailing an outrigger canoe. With their assistance, we manage to set the course and continue through crystal-clear turquoise waters, spotting stingrays and eagle rays along the way. Dinghy to Dust – Repairing BareBare (Ep. 1) Every other boat has left the anchorage, fleeing from the massive 4–6 meter swell rolling in. But BareBare has no engine—she’s stuck, unable to move to safety. Meanwhile, Leif Erik battles rough conditions to fix the dinghy, only to discover it’s in far worse shape than expected. The dinghy, coated in epoxy and cloth back in Norway, seemed solid—but water had sneaked in under the railing, rotting the plywood from the inside out. Now, Leif Erik has to remove the damaged parts (an alarmingly easy task, given how rotten they are!) and replace them with fresh wood. Just as progress is being made, Anne gets a long splinter straight through her thumbnail, leading to an unexpected trip to the nearest hospital… 🌺 Our Journey BareBare is a Wharram Tiki 38, a Polynesian-inspired double canoe that we built ourselves and shipped across the ocean. 🙏 Thank You for Your Support! Maiden voyage: The Beginning of Our Sailing Story - Just building BareBare - Ep 20 In this episode, we complete the rigging process and eagerly hoist the sails for our maiden voyage. A gentle breeze, leads our little ship and her crew silently between the Islands close to her homeport at Bygdøy. BareBare has her own mooring close to all the museums at Bygdøy. We pull her closer to the pier with a rope and this way we can easily hoist sails and other equipment on-board. The area of Bygdøy, close to the Norwegian Maritime Museum, Fram and Gjøa Museum and maybe the most famous on The Kon-Tiki Museum is a very beautiful area. We are a short ferry ride from the centre of Oslo and close to some lovely little islands; Hovedøya, Lindøya, Nakholmen and Gressholmen. A few of the islands even have small restaurants that we can visit. The local tourist boat has even started sailing close to BareBare, telling her story to tourists. We finish the leather work in this episode on the fork/boom using copper nails. The oak has gotten many layers of varnish. Our steering position is down towards the heads, the toilet - in one of the two toilets this exclusive little boat is so happy to have! We have a nice day on the fjord and in the afternoon, when the wind slows down we row her back to the buoy.
