In this episode we sit down and discuss the logistics of having a dog onboard our sailboat, how we navigate getting him on and off the boat, how he goes to the toilet, and how we navigate border crossings. In general there is a lot of paperwork and costs that come along with having a dog, and this seems to double again once you try taking a dog to different counties, especially a high risk rabies country. It's been a while since we posted a video like this...No disasters, no storms, no hospital, just pure cruising bliss. We had forgotten what it was like to feel at ease, and man did we need this! And for all you Sierra fans out there, brace yourselves for some cuteness overload in this one 🥰 After all the chaos and stress of running from Hurricane Kay, the dust had finally settled and the seas had calmed, so we pull the anchor and set sail for Puerto Don Juan which is actually the anchorage we diverted away from at the last minute when we decided to opt for riding out the hurricane in San Carlos. We arrive to have our minds completely blown at the beauty and stillness of this sheltered paradise. 2022 was probably the year we did the biggest upgrades to the boat. We added air conditioning, replaced the standing rigging, replaced our galley countertops and gimballing stove, bought a new dinghy, and of course upgraded the battery bank. For Talisman, this was a huge upgrade. Not only do these batteries hold their charge better than our old Trojan gel batteries, but the rated amp hours went from 280Ah to 840Ah. We have so much extra capacity that it’s nothing short of amazing. And it all fits in the same battery box! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Big wind and huge, steep swell set a massive physical challenge for the three Olympic fleets on day two of the Lanzarote International Regatta in the Canary Islands. British skiff sailors surfed to the top of the rankings in the two skiff classes. On Wednesday the team ventured out of the harbour to tow-test the AC 40 and were greeted by sunny, glassy, early Spring conditions – ideal for running through the ride-heights, foil cants and systems controls. Numerous flight modes and foil arm pitches were tested as described below in the on-water recon team’s notes and the hope is that the team will be sailing the first AC 40 in Barcelona before the weekend. In this episode we finish off the last repairs and take you through the paint prep of getting the topsides painted from primer coat through to spraying the topcoat with an airless sprayer. We also paint the mast, change the furler forestay, paint the hardtop including replacing all the windows in the hardtop.
