So this week we enter the River Deben.. For anyone that knows this has a reputation for a tricky entrance as there are constantly moving shingle banks. The passage is not to be taken lightly and like most entrances with a reputation the conditions need to be right. On the day we went they were as good as it gets thankfully but we still felt the powerful and confused currents running wild. The River Deben itself is beautiful and a very peaceful place with lots of stop offs. We stayed for the night, had a lovely walk down the river and a stop off at the Ramsholt Arms.. The nights sleep was calm and morning ball was free which is always great. I highly recommend downloading the latest chart when planning a trip as the entrance changes frequently. At the time of filming Easter weekend 2023 they had just published a new chart and placed the buoys for the year which was handy to say the least. As always thank you for watching. Everyone enjoys this place. Sawandarek dive site on Mansuar Island Sawandarek is an incredibly fun dive site. There is so much to see here. There are even a lot of coral restoration being done on some of the slopes. As fas as marine life is concerned, Sawandarek has a huge amount of life. From schooling snappers in the deep, along with a small school of sweetlips, to friendly batfish, turtles and even giant sweetlips. There are even one of the biggest giant clams in all of central Raja Ampat one can see here. The schooling jack fish, that are not shy of divers is a pure joy to find. Usually they hang out in relative shallow water, not far from the jetty. And if you approach them slowly, they might even circle around you. In this blog, we will look at how to trim your sails when sailing upwind. Sailing upwind is classified as sailing at any angle lower than 90 degrees to the wind. Sailing directly into the wind is not possible; therefore, to sail in the direction of the wind, you must continuously tack in a zig zagging motion. The most efficient way to trim your sails when tacking upwind is to have them close hauled. This means pulling them as close to the centerline of the boat as possible. This will allow you to point higher and therefore get to your destination faster. Whether you are pointing 90 degrees or 45 degrees to the wind, this blog will be helpful in demonstrating how to use your vessel’s instruments to improve the trim and get the most speed out of your boat. They have bright futures ahead despite of the near suicidal risks they took going on a reality TV show where you stand a high chance of being brutally “fired” in front of 10M viewers. We commend them all! Well done!!! We should also thank the film crew and others who must have seen us filming with our action cameras, and looked the other way. What is shown in this episode is an honest representation of what we saw, with very little editing. And if anyone out there dreams of working in TV production, let me tell you that it runs at a brutal pace. It’s very hard, high-pressure work, so kudos to the people behind the cameras, mics, and editing screens as well.

It was a tough start to the season with a 500NM passage across the Adriatic, around the foot of Italy, past Sicily and on to Malta. We had every kind of weather and an engine that wouldn't start in the middle of the Adriatic leaving us floundering in a patch of no wind, and a forecast of 50 knots the next day! All in all, though, we really enjoyed the trip. We put in one stop at Otranto in Italy, to anchor while a storm blew through. We will never forget sailing into Grand Harbour Valletta at dawn. Our time in Martinique was great. We arrived at St Anne's from Dominica and set anchor in the beautiful spacious bay. 'Checking in' on the French islands is super easy. We went ashore and found the little coffee shop that had a small room off to the side, where we went onto a computer, put in all our boat details and crew list, printed out our official document, paid the €3 for the shop owner to stamp and sign it and viola, we were legally in French territory. No immigration or customs officials involved👍. St Anne's is a beautiful little place with a historical church at its center, and 2 little beachfront streets of stores and houses. The residential area expands up the hill from there. We did a bus ride into Fort-du-France to go to the Decathlon outdoor warehouse type store that didn't disappoint. It's an incredible store that has everything from rollerscates to diving equipment to dingys, fishing, and camping equipment. It was amazing to see. It was also a great way to see a bit more of the island where they have expansive banana plantations and hills of sugar cane as far as the eye can see. From St Anne's we headed around and into Le Marin, a very crowded anchorage, but it put us closer to the shopping area that has large Leader Price and Carrefour stores, perfect for reprovisioning the yacht. We were also able to get to the fuel jetty to stock up on water and fuel. The water here is some of the least expensive we have experienced in the Caribbean, so that made a nice change. We then headed up the coast to St. Pierre. What a 'historical' treat. We got to explore the beautiful old town that still shows so much of the original damage caused by the 1902 eruption of Mt Pelee. From the old theater and adjacent prison to the original old cobbled roads, it was a beautiful place to explore. For Robin's birthday, we headed up the long and winding uphill road🥵 to the DePazz Rhum Distillery where we got to tour the distillery and adjacent beautiful villa, ending off in the Rhum store. We went in saying that we wouldn't be buying much, but that didn't last when we saw and tasted 🤪 the amazing selection of rums and rum based  liqueurs that they have on offer. Martinique was a beautiful stop, with some great memories to and to our ever growing memory bank.

Under brilliant blue skies and active seas today, the fleet of 38 boats from 10 countries started the 2023 ORC European Championship here in Malta with a brisk “majjistral” wind, the local term for breeze from the northwest that funnels between Sicily and Tunisia. This brisk breeze of 14-20 knots helped propel the teams in all three classes in a fast initial phase of their courses set for completion in 24-36 hours. The 10 entries in Class A have a 186-mile course that from the start off Valletta first winds around the southern coast of Malta, rounds the small island of Filfla, then unwinds back to the east then northeast on a long leg towards a special purpose buoy set off the Marina di Ragusa at southern tip of Sicily. From there the Class A fleet heads southwest to a mark at the northwest end of the island of Gozo, where they then head southeast to round Malta to port, take a 13-mile leg past Valletta to Comino, then back to a picturesque finish line set in Valletta harbor between the Bastion and Tigne Point.
