During The Ocean Race’s Newport stopover, SAIL magazine had a chance to catch up with some of the sailors that make this race possible. Here’s a peek into the mindsets onboard halfway through the round-the-world race. “It’s already a difficult situation. You lose a mast. But you can lose more than that if you don’t make good decisions.” —Kevin Escoffier, skipper of fleet leader Holcim-PRB, on what went through his head in the moments after dismasting during Leg 4. #TheOceanRace #11thhourracingteam #malizia #biotherm #Holcim #guyotenvironment #sailing #yachtracing #imoca60 #IMOCA

The trip to Frankton Locks gets underway! Joining me on this trip is first time narrowboater, my brother! He takes to the tiller like a pro and does most of this first leg by himself. It's a super gloomy and rainy day - but on the canals the silver lining of bad weather is how quiet it is! Watch next week's video for the rest of the adventure! Nagol Jumping, or land jumping from towers made of natural woods and vines is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and uniquely surviving tribal traditions in our planet. Watching Nagol 200 years ago in Captain Cook's times must have been truly amazing, but watching it today, happen exactly the same as it was then is even more astounding. Only seeing is believing so after you watch this video I recommend you go to Vanuatu and watch this precursor sport of bungee jumping first hand.

“With the wind in our sails, the sound of the sea around us on a wooden ship without an engine, we set off on a voyage of inspiration for change...” As creators, artists and performers we wish to bring our art to as many people as possible. However, this desire often conflicts with busy schedules, little time, money and flexibility. Often, this hectic pace means foregoing sustainable decisions. With all this in mind, we aim to do things differently and also with our last large-scale production we tested new waters - quite literally. "Ripples - the sailing circus show" took place on the wooden sailing ship “Swallow” and was brought to audiences in Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Norway during the 2-month sailing tour in the summer of 2022. In this video, the crew and artistic team behind “Ripples” share what is necessary for an international tour to be more sustainable. We hope it serves as an inspiration for other culture professionals and that you incorporate our advice into your own tour planning so that the art we create finds its audiences in the most sustainable ways possible. --- "Ripples" was a collaboration between Acting for Climate, Hawila - Cargo, Education and Culture by Sail & Festival Norpas. The project was funded by Erasmus+ ungdom , Koneen Säätiö - Kone Foundation, Nordisk kulturkontakt and Kulturdirektoratet. The project received the support of Københavns Kommune. “Recognise that your grief is rooted in something you love” - Our concern with the state of our planet and its climate triggers strong feelings in many. The care and love we have for our nature but also the fear, anger and sadness are part of our experiences when dealing with climate change and its global consequences. We used these strong emotions for inspiration and together with director Hanne Trap Friis created "Ripples - the sailing circus show". The performance, which took place on the wooden sailing ship “Swallow”, reached many people and communities in Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Norway during the 2-month sailing tour in the summer of 2022. Moments of exchange took place everywhere - on land and at sea. Summarised in this video, the collective thoughts from these interactions are meant to help us to understand these overwhelming feelings that climate change triggers in us and inspire us to transform them into action. --- "Ripples" was a collaboration between Acting for Climate, Hawila - Cargo, Education and Culture by Sail & Festival Norpas The project was funded by Erasmus+ ungdom, Koneen Säätiö - Kone Foundation, Nordisk kulturkontakt and Kulturdirektoratet. We Found The LONELIEST Island In The Bahamas. In this week's episode, we're setting sail for the Crooked Islands, taking advantage of the great weather. As we approach, we're greeted by an abandoned town, its homes standing as skeletons of the past. The silence surrounds us, and we wonder what remains. By the looks of it, this truly is a lost island - what will we find? Exploring further, we discover signs of life—a well-maintained generator and a water treatment plant. The remnants of a church and a graveyard remind us of the island's history. We stumble upon a forgotten school, where scattered books offer glimpses into the lives of past students. Leaving this place behind, we carry the stories and images with us. We hope to return one day to see the rebuilt town and meet the people who call this place home. Watch the highlights of the Leg 5 start ans see how 11th Hour Racing Team used their local knowledge as Charlie Enright took the best start in Newport, Rhode Island. Light conditions in Narragansett Bay allowed Germany's Team Malizia to steal the lead and score the maximum 5 points of the Newport In-Port Race and then led the fleet out into the Atlantic! As the fleet departs for the North Atlantic journey back to Europe, The Ocean Race remembers Hans Horrevoets who passed away sailing from New York to Portsmouth back in the 2005-06 edition. The Dutch sailor, a key member of ABN AMRO TWO, is fondly remembered by those who were lucky to know him. His legacy lives on through the Hans Horrevoets Trophy recognising the best under 30 sailor in each edition. #TheOceanRace Don’t forget to subscribe for more The Ocean Race: https://goo.gl/BzBCwU Check out our full video catalogue: https://goo.gl/nrB9ay Like The Ocean Race on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theoceanrace/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theoceanrace/ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theoceanrace/ Read More: http://www.theoceanrace.com
