The first week of December, we began the planking process by moving all our timber over from our shipyard to the slipway and parallelly removing the old planks on port and starboard side. We quickly built scaffolding around the ship, set up the steam box and constructed a portable workshop tent. Starting with the bow, we removed nine planks on each side, some of which dated back to Hawila's original construction in 1935. Remarkably, much of this nearly 90-year-old timber still showed incredible strength. Meanwhile, we've been fairing the new frames installed during the 2022-2023 phase of the rebuild, and we are nearly done! The oak we are using was sustainably sourced from state-managed Danish forests in 2020 and 2021. After air drying at our shipyard for several years, it has now been moved to the slipway, ready to bring Hawila one step closer to being back in the water. In the coming months, we'll expand the planking work to the midship and aft sections, aiming to replace a total of 350 meters of planking, most of it below the waterline. After the removal of the planks, we had two teams work on each side on fairing the futtock frames. This is important for fitting the new plank in correctly and a real pleasure to work on new frame material. Niko then proceeded with templating the first plank on port side, while some more fairing was going on on starboard side. Then this week, our team gathered on a cold but beautiful, sunny day to put the first plank into our steam box. After 5 hours of steaming, the fibre was flexible enough for the plank to be put in in new place. This process requires good team coordination as we have to work fast before the wood has cooled down and hardened again. Everything worked out smoothly and the first plank found its place onto our hull. Again we are incredibly grateful for the help of Holbæk Gamle Havns Beddinger and our fantastic team of volunteers, who every day defy the Danish winter and give their utmost best! On November 20th 2024, our team, with the help of Holbæk Gamle Havns Beddinger brought Hawila back on the slipway. VIDEO CREDITS: Morten Løvschall The crew started early that day to put the last pieces of tarp into place, then Hawila's engine started rolling and we took her on her little tour through the fjord over to the Old Harbour of Holbæk, where the slipway is located. There, we were greeted by the fantastic team of the association behind the local slipway, who went straight into action. It took 3 hours to put her back on land but everything worked out great. "With the wind in our sails, the sound of the sea around us on a wooden ship without an engine, we set off on a voyage of inspiration for change..." As creators, artists and performers we wish to bring our art to as many people as possible. However, this desire often conflicts with busy schedules, little time, money and flexibility. Often, this hectic pace means foregoing sustainable decisions. With all this in mind, we aim to do things differently and also with our last large-scale production we tested new waters - quite literally. "Ripples - the sailing circus show" took place on the wooden sailing ship "Swallow" and was brought to audiences in Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Norway during the 2-month sailing tour in the summer of 2022. In this video, the crew and artistic team behind "Ripples" share what is necessary for an international tour to be more sustainable. We hope it serves as an inspiration for other culture professionals and that you incorporate our advice into your own tour planning so that the art we create finds its audiences in the most sustainable ways possible. --- "Ripples" was a collaboration between Acting for Climate, Hawila - Cargo, Education and Culture by Sail & Festival Norpas. "Recognise that your grief is rooted in something you love" - Our concern with the state of our planet and its climate triggers strong feelings in many. The care and love we have for our nature but also the fear, anger and sadness are part of our experiences when dealing with climate change and its global consequences. We used these strong emotions for inspiration and together with director Hanne Trap Friis created "Ripples - the sailing circus show". The performance, which took place on the wooden sailing ship "Swallow", reached many people and communities in Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Norway during the 2-month sailing tour in the summer of 2022. Moments of exchange took place everywhere - on land and at sea. Summarised in this video, the collective thoughts from these interactions are meant to help us to understand these overwhelming feelings that climate change triggers in us and inspire us to transform them into action. --- "Ripples" was a collaboration between Acting for Climate, Hawila - Cargo, Education and Culture by Sail & Festival Norpas The project was funded by Erasmus+ ungdom, Koneen Säätiö - Kone Foundation, Nordisk kulturkontakt and Kulturdirektoratet. Initially, we had planned to keep Hawila's stern intact as it appeared healthy and had received massive work in the 90s. However, things are not always as they appear on wooden ships, and while trying to fit our beam shelves aft we realised the poor condition of the upper stern frames particularly. To make a good connection we now have to replace the stern frames which means that eventually nearly all ship's timber will be replaced. After removing the poop deck, we dismantled the whole stern area in the last few weeks. Video edit: Karoline Hill Music: Break Your Lock and Key by Mini Vandals

In the last weeks, our team put six bilge stringers to add strength and stiffness to the hull. For each one, we follow the same procedure: The first step is to create a template and transfer it to the carefully selected piece of oak, which we shape into form with circular saws, planers and sanders. Then our team uses a mix of linseed oil, tar and chalk to seal the gaps between the bilge stringer and frames. In the meantime, the piece of oak is being steamed and finally bent and bolted into its place. Video edit: Karoline Hill Music: Buckeye Bonzai by Vans in Japan

Shipwrights, boatbuilders, or carpenters with shipbuilding experience wanted for S/V Hawila! S/V Hawila is an 87-year-old, wooden-built galeas of 35 m length, currently being rebuilt in Holbæk, Denmark. The ship is back in the water after intensive work on the local slipway. Now the work focuses on midship upper framing and stanchions, midship beam shelves and ceiling. We will continue in the summer with bulkheads and covering boards. You'd be hosted on-site and will become part of a strong community of professional craftsmen who've been dedicated to this project for more than one year. In exchange for your volunteer work, shares of the ship and sailing days will be allocated on the first Atlantic crossing voyage scheduled for winter 2023/24. Does this sound interesting? This is "The Story Of Hawila" - a series documenting the refit and community surrounding the ship "S/V Hawila", a traditional wooden sailing ship built in 1935 in Norway. A group of friends saved the ship from destruction. They formed the not-for-profit organisation "Hawila Project" in 2014 and have operated the vessel as a platform for culture and education since then. The vision has always been to bridge coastal communities and engage the public in challenging issues surrounding globalization, overconsumption, and the climate crisis. Now, the goal is to integrate ethical transport of sustainably produced organic goods, which is why the ship has been in a structural overhaul since September 2020 in Holbæk, Denmark. Hawila will be sailing 60 tons of organic products and trainees across the Atlantic in an emission-free way, showing that respectful, ethical, and clean transport is possible. In this intro to our series "The Story Of Hawila", we are bringing Hawila back into the water at the end of March 2022 after 3 months of intense work on the hull. In the following episodes, we will introduce team members, show the work that has already been done and give you more insight into the community around the ship. Since undertaking the major reframing operation whilst on the slipway, we have now relaunched Hawila and are very happy to be afloat once again! The planks have been slowly taking up and the seams are now tight. We have been busy fairing the inside of the frames to accept the ceiling planks and bilge stringers, which will help to produce the rigidity of the ship fore and aft. Fairing is to shape the frames by planing and sanding to produce a fair and even curve and allows us to fasten the ceiling plank tightly to the surface of the frames. Having completed the fairing in the bow, our team wasted no time in hanging the first ceiling plank. The oak plank is steamed for two hours to make it sufficiently pliable so that it can be bent into shape and fastened to the frames. Once fixed, it adds rigidity to the fore and aft strength of the ship. Hawila was built in 1935 as a coastal sailing cargo vessel, planked in 50mm oak with length up to 6m. Planks were fastened using treenails going through the frame and wedged on both sides, the seams were then caulked with hemp, and later filled with pitch. The last month we replaced more than 260m of the old Hawila's planks, some of them in still good shape of preservation and still holding strong to their treenails! On those oak planks we replaced, we chose to increase plank thickness from 50mm to 65mm, with length of 11 to 14m, this in order to add more strength and durability to the vessel. The Danish oak we used was planted 200 years ago, and air dried outside for 2 years before being fastened to Hawila. In addition, we increased the thickness of the galbord to 85mm, nearly twice the original thickness. In this short video, we present a sum-up of the processes used to replace a planks. When Hawila was built in 1935, frames and planks were fastened using treenails: a traditional and reliable fastening solution for frames and planks on all kind of ships and constructions. From our experience, treenails present a longer lasting fastening solution than galvanised bolts in oak as they won't deteriorate with time, but are longer to produce and harder to use. In this short video, we present the process we used to produce and insert oak treenails in our oak planks.
