The boats are taking advantage of favourable conditions to leave Newport behind, with Aarhus in their sights It’s been a fast 24 hours in The Ocean Race, with teams making around 500 miles towards the target of the finish line – Aarhus, Denmark in northern Europe. The conditions are mostly favourable for making miles – reaching conditions in a north wind that is in the 25+ knot range. The limiting factor today is the sea state, with the wind pushing against the gulf stream making for a bumpy ride. “The weather system that cancelled the in port race on Saturday has been lurking out here over the open ocean… We find ourselves in the middle of it,” said Charlie Enright on 11th Hour Racing Team, which is leading the charge at the front of the fleet. “It’s hard to forecast, it’s really volatile and it’s really windy. We’ve had wind in the mid to high 30s at times and experienced a shift of 40-degrees. You can imagine what that does to the sea state in a place that’s already quite treacherous. We’re just trying to ride it out.” They’re doing more than that. With over 520 miles under the keel in the last 24 hours, 11th Hour Racing Team is 15 miles ahead of Team Holcim-PRB, who in turn have a 30 mile margin on Team Malizia. The Biotherm boat has dropped 30 miles further back. “There is a lot of current here,” Escoffier said earlier. “The wind is picking up but I fear we will have wind against current in the gulf stream and the sea state won’t be very good.” And this has come pass. The wind is forecast to shift to the south later this week and the fast progress across the Atlantic should continue.

We continue our island hopping around the Grenadines and head back to Mayreau to further explore the island. We find the abandoned resort just by the beach of Salt Whistle Bay. It's kind of sad to see such a vast place just being abandoned and debris just being spread by the wind as nature takes over. We also show you the results of our sewing project with the sun cover as the wind has finally calmed down enough to put it up. If you sail here, our favourite beach is the Salines Bay. It's not so crowded as Salt Whistle Bay but is still has a very nice beach. I make my first proper trip up the coast (28nm) - from the River Bradwell to the Walton Backwaters, and then back again early the next morning. I wasn't sure how long it would take, how I'd manage sailing alone for so many hours, or how tricky it would be to get into the narrow Walton channel at low water. Here's what happened.

Our 6 months journey has started! Of course the beginning was at our homeport in Makkum. But Amsterdam felt like the real beginning. Sailing from Amsterdam to Scheveningen. Awesome sailing it was. Sailing single-handed with a gennaker for about 65-70 miles from Wilmington, NC to Beaufort, NC. The gennaker is my favorite, and the most powerful sail I have - the boat will soar through the water. Enjoy this video with lots of details about how to furl and unfurl the mighty sail, with great music and perfect weather. It may not be the most graceful way of handling the gennaker, but it's my way and it works :) Cheers!
