The Cape 31 been the talk of the town for some time here in the UK but in recent months the class has exploded. For the first event of a six round 2023 Solent season there were 25 boats entered as part of the RORC's Vice Admiral's Cup. The fleet is expected to grow even further for the second event, the National Championships in June. In this video we take the outrigger canoe build to a new level by laminating the inside and outside of the hull with carbon fiber and a thin layer of fiberglass and vacuum bagging it all to suck out any extra resin (and air) and get an extremely tight clamp on the lamination while it cures. Since we came down to Martinique we decided to get all the boat repairs and services done so that we don't have to worry about it in a few years. We weren't able to go anywhere in the first few days because of the boat work. But fortunately, later we got some time to explore this beautiful island. We drove down to a beach on the southern point and had a lovely evening with a great sunset view. We have become friends with a lot of amazing families along this journey. It was so fun to hang out with them. So we motored our way up north (we didn't have the sail back) to spend some more time with the families. It was a great time! There we so many kids and they all had so much fun. Then we decided to hike up Mount Pelée. It used to be a volcano which erupted a long time ago. Twenty-one RS Aeros travelled to Soldiers Point for the Sail Port Stephens ‘Off The Beach’ series, run by the Bay Sailing Centre. Two on-water training sessions were held on Friday by former RS Aero World Champion Rhett Gowans. The fleet enjoyed an excellent day’s racing on Saturday in bright sunshine and cool westerlies, varying in strength from 8-12 knots, occasionally gusting to 15 knots. With a forecast of 25+ knots for Sunday, the Race Committee wisely decided to run an extra (fourth) race on Saturday on the off chance that racing might be cancelled the following day. No complaints from the sailors who returned to the beach happy with some great racing. Sure enough, Sunday delivered on its forecast with gusts powering across the bay at up to 30 knots by late morning. The Committee kept options open with the fleet kept ashore until 11.30am when the hooter finally signalled that racing was cancelled for the day. From the four races on Saturday the event winner was Gary Ratcliffe’s Rat Race from Rhett Gowans’ Rhett’s Rig and Cameron Shaw’s Single Malt. The George’s River Sailing Club held 6 of the top 10 positions, with Richard Shaw being the best of the Balmoral Sailing Club fleet. Props to the Bay Sailing Centre (run by Newcastle Yacht Club) for some great courses, on-time starts and friendly race organisation. Les festivités ont eu lieu au sein même du chantier car quoi de mieux que d'être au coeur historique de notre activité, la construction de voiliers en aluminium, et avec toute l'équipe. Sur fond d'échanges et de rencontres entre propriétaires, clients, actionnaires, fournisseurs, prestataires et compagnons, cette journée a été ponctuée par la visite des ateliers de chaudronnerie, peinture et montage en passant par l'atelier refit. Un moment de convivialité a été partagé autour de produits locaux notamment avec les fruits de mer des Viviers de la Guittière, accompagnés des vins (à consommer avec modération) OVNI des Vignobles Mourat de Mareuil. Et l'anniversaire a été célébré autour du voilier 100% choux et nougatine de la Maison Virtel du Château d'Olonne. Des propriétaires ont témoigné de leur attachement à Alubat et à leur bateau avec des expériences toutes différentes et enrichissantes. La journée s'est terminée au Port Olona pour des visites d'OVNI à flot prêtés par leur propriétaire pour l'occasion. Merci à tous. La grande famille Alubat, et elle n'était pas au complet, était réunie pour célébrer ce bel anniversaire ! On a background of exchanges and meetings between owners, customers, shareholders, suppliers, service providers and companions, this day was punctuated by visits to the metalworking, painting and assembly workshops, including the refit workshop. A moment of conviviality was shared around local products, in particular with seafood from the Viviers de la Guittiere, accompanied by wines (to be consumed in moderation) OVNI from the Vignobles Mourat de Mareuil. And the anniversary was celebrated around the 100% cabbage and nougatine sailboat from Maison Virtel in Château d'Olonne. Owners have testified to their attachment to Alubat and their boat with experiences that are all different and enriching. The day ended in Port Olona for visits to OVNIs afloat lent by their owner for the occasion. Thank you all.
