Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei generalüberholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Das Jahr 2023 hatten wir uns ganz anders vorgestellt. Wir wurden durch einige unaufschiebbare familiäre Ereignisse in unserer Planung aus der Bahn geworfen. Froh sind wir, dass Mola Mola hier auf Lanzarote einen sicheren Liegeplatz hat, und wir uns nicht auch noch um das Schiff kümmern müssen. Die Marina Lanzarote in Arrecife hat sich für uns als Glücksfall erwiesen: sehr zentral gelegen, unmittelbar am Airport und bei allen Windwichtungen sicher und gut geschützt. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich hier auf den Kanaren. Heute nehmen wir euch mit zu einem Kurztripp nach Fuerteventura! Nix Großes, aber zum Seelebaumeln lassen genau das Richtige. IN THIS VIDEO: After an unforgettable New Year’s Eve in St. Barths, we set sail for Guadeloupe! Our original plan was to head to Pointe-à-Pitre with Basse-Terre as a backup, but sailing often comes with unexpected changes. When we made great time and heard our friend Rob and his crew were in Les Saintes, we couldn’t resist the detour—and it turned out to be the best decision! What started as a quick stop became an incredible week of adventure. Les Saintes, a cluster of picturesque islands just south of mainland Guadeloupe, is a must-visit destination. With its abandoned ruins, breathtaking scenery, and world-class diving, we were eager to explore. Scuba diving gave us a chance to dust off our gear and refresh our skills, with dives reaching about 40 feet. Conveniently, the dive shop was just a quick dinghy ride away, making tank refills a breeze. We also hiked up a 950-foot hill to an old abandoned watchtower, where we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views. Later, we joined our friends Jeff and Carrie (SV Rhythm) for an epic beach BBQ featuring fresh lobster, alongside Pascal and Zara (SV Sirtaki) and Chris and Sue (SV Talise). After nearly a week, we were ready for more adventure. We sailed up to Basse-Terre, aiming to hike the active volcano before heading to Îlet Pigeon, home to the famous Jacques Cousteau Nature Park. While the volcano hike didn’t happen, we explored historic forts and other scenic trails—plus, Dennis had a classic sailor’s mishap, discovering fishing line wrapped around our prop (luckily, no damage!). We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Navigation am Segelboot auf Langfahrt: Plotter, iPad, Handy, Papierkarten — wie das zusammenspielt. Ein Freund fragte mich, ob er einen zweiten Plotter braucht. Meine Antwort hat ihn überrascht. Ich hab auf der La Licorne kein teures Cockpit-Setup — und trotzdem navigiere ich zuverlässig auf Langfahrt. Mein Raymarine C120 ist aus den 90ern, kein NMEA, alte Karten. Aber er macht Radar und er funktioniert immer. Das eigentliche Herzstück ist ein uraltes gebrauchtes iPad der sechsten Generation mit Navionics und AIS überlagert. Diese Kombination — aktuelle Seekarte plus AIS — ist für mich auf See das Entscheidende. Dazu kommt mein Handy mit Navily, Windy, Ankeralarm und dem elektronischen Logbuch. Und Papierkarten, die ich manchmal fast vergesse, obwohl sie vorgeschrieben sind und besonders an der Atlantikküste oder im Englischen Kanal wirklich gerettet haben. Ganz am Ende gibt es noch einen Tipp, den ich fast vergessen hätte: wie du deine gesamte Navigation mit einem Backofen vor Blitzeinschlag schützt. ORCA!! and VERY Stinky Stowaway This week we head to Whangarei in New Zealand's North Island and walk to the top of Mount Manaia. We have our first ever encounter with New Zealand Orca's (killer Whales) and Jo does an awful lot of squealing when they swim past the boat while hunting stingrays. A truly awesome encounter. We get our furler fixed and then have a lively sail to Great Barrier Island in 30 knots of breeze. On the way we get welcomed by some very excited dolphins, surfing and playing in our bow wave. Our most active dolphin encounter so far! When we arrive at the Barrier we then discover a stowaway from our Fiji crossing - a very ripe character. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Also known as The Straad, St Ninian’s Bay is another small bay on the west coast of Bute. St Ninian’s point is a spit of land that can become cut off with spring tides, but the Bay itself is protected by this promonotory. The Bay commands breathtaking views of Inchmarnock, and is home to St Ninian’s Chapel. The bay itself once supported a thriving fishing fleet and as such the beach is covered with a sand of white cockleshells. This week we have fun at anchor, enjoy a BBQ with friends and forget many things.... Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us. We are Kathrin and Daniel. We sail, cruise and live aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies, after our three boys left the nest we made a big decision. We left the rat race in London behind and made our beloved sailboat our primary floating home. Over the years we have added a few things to Polaris. We got rid of the standard propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric cooker and oven. We fitted a generator and changed to a lithium (LiFePo) house battery bank. We added a 1'200W solar arch and a water maker. With all these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable live aboard yacht. We sail her along Britain's beautiful coastline and we live on her summer and winter. Kathrin loves cooking and baking on board. You will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes. We completely fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rented house in London and sold or gave away all our belongings that had no space on Polaris.
