After a number of very light wind or extremely strong wind race days so far in the Australian 18 Footers League’s 2025-26 season on Sydney Harbour, today’s Race 6 of the League’s Club Championship was finally expected to produce a more traditional 15-knot North East wind - perfect weather for 18ft skiff racing conditions. That was the expectation, but sadly the ongoing weather situation became even worse than the other race days and the racing was abandoned after the first lap of the three-lap North East course when the wind turned to the west and freshened well beyond the fleet’s ability to continue with their big #1 rigs. Obviously, the point scores remain as they were with Yandoo leading on a total of 20 points. Balmain is in 2nd place with a total of 25, followed by Rag & Famish Hotel and Sixt, equal in 3rd place on 26 points. Other points in the top-10 are, Lazarus Capital Partners and Smeg on 35, Club Marine 36, Shaw and Partners Financial Services 46, Sotheby’s Ballard Property 47 and Fisher & Paykel on 54 points. The RYA Competent Crew practical course is an excellent introduction for beginners. It is the perfect starting point if you have done little or no sailing before, or have spent a week or two sailing with friends in the UK or abroad. This course is ideal if you have done little or no sailing before. You will become a useful crew member and an asset to anyone you go sailing with. Sleeping and eating on board (apart from perhaps the odd evening meal out in a pub or restaurant if you choose!) you will learn lots about sailing, life on board and how fun it is. You will stay at a different marina or anchorage or harbour each night. Minimum Pre Course Experience: None required. Ability after the Course: You will be a useful crew member! Course Content: Basic seamanship and helmsmanship. The course is best taken over 5 consecutive days or over 2 weekends (a short and a long). We can also run different courses at the same time, on the same boat. Kelvin then has to make the tough call as a visit to A&E brings bad news. We become actual five go sailing but have trouble finding a suitable weather window to leave the island. We make poor decisions in our passage planning and are forced to turn back. We are given advice from the harbour master which goes against everything we have been taught but it finally gets us off the Island and across the channel to England. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off. September 16-17 52°24’08.9″N 4°53’17.4″E Sail from Lake Markermeer Lake to Amsterdam Marina (Sept.16): 16nm 4hrs Light winds Partly cloudy It was a short trip over to the Amsterdam canal & we were excited to see the city. There were a few things to be aware of on our way over though. The canal is a highway for cargo ships, so there were many to steer clear of. This we knew of beforehand. What we didn’t think of were all the passenger vessels crossing back & forth over the canal at a frequent rate. We had to dodge many & almost got hit by one! We were amazed at the many amusing buildings along the canal and noticed a huge swing on the top of a skyscraper as we motored in. A fellow sailor recommended we stay at the Amsterdam Marina in the middle of the city, and we were satisfied with this choice. It’s always nice to know exactly where to go in such a busy area! We were planning to move on the next day, so we took a quick sight-seeing tour right away. We just needed to take the canal-taxi over to the other side to experience downtown Amsterdam. The taxi itself had a lane for bikes/mopeds and a lane for pedestrians. We were overwhelmed by the amount of bikes everywhere when we got off the taxi boat! They were EVERYWHERE! And, there were even traffic lanes & traffic lights specifically for directing cyclists. We felt a little lost not knowing the traffic rules & it was hazardous just trying to cross a sidewalk – we not only had to look out for cars, but also bikes…and they rode fast, without helmets! In Norway, we are used to everyone wearing helmets. We usually love cycling, but we absolutely did NOT feel comfortable doing it here – someone was BOUND to crash! 😉 We had a lot of fun looking around in the narrow streets & over the canals, though. We noticed that the “coffee” shops offered things a little STRONGER than caffeine ;). The boys got a little cultured, you could say. There was everything from water-pipe cafés to mushroom shops to laughing gas at a souvenir shop to cannabis brownie shops! De Aldán a Portonovo navegando a vela. Salimos con nuestro velero Aristos Tres, un Fortuna 9 del que estamos enamorados, de la playa de Arneles, en la ría de Aldán. En calma total, nos vemos obligados a dejar guardadas nuestras velas y hacer toda la navegación a motor. Pasamos por delante de Pinténs, Area Cova, Area Brava, Menduíña, Cabo Udra, para De repente, encontrarnos con la Ría de Pontevedra. Ponemos rumbo a la playa de Canelas, en Portonovo, donde al final fondeamos. Es un día tranquilo, la mar está totalmente en calma. Sol y moscas. Una vez fondeados, me pongo a cocinar una estupenda caldereta de pescado de @la Pescadería de mi Barrio. A la hora de comer, se acercan Heriberto y Paz, unos amigos y vecinos de pantalán, armadores del Cuelebre, un precioso Furia. La comida está buenísima y la compañía aún mejor. Imagínate, en un barco, con sol, en Portonovo, rodeado de mi familia y mis amigos. Después de comer y de hacer la digestión para que no se enfade mi madre, David y yo nos vamos a bucear un poco. El agua está chocolate. Totalmente turbia. Aún así, buceamos una hora y media. Conseguimos ver un sargo y poco más. Nos vamos de vuelta a la ría de Vigo. Pero esto no es el fin, y que el camino cuenta. Cuando navegas es cuando las cosas suceden. La vida en sí, es el movimiento. Decidimos izar el Gennaker. Hay poco viento, pero los disfrutamos un montón. Al pasar por la Costa de la Vela, decidimos izar la vela mayor. Apenas sopla, pero estamos tan a gusto que no nos importa. Se disfruta todo. Tanto cuando hay 40 nudos como cuando está en calma total. Cada instante tiene su parte especial. Amo navegar. It is unfurled by an outhaul furler mounted on the boom. But they DO need cleaning and servicing periodically. Electric 'brushed' motors can become clogged with carbon deposits and the brushes themselves can wear down or simply break. I simple clean and brush replacement can add years to the life of an electric motor. Thanks to ErodexUK (formally ECP) for sourcing the right brushes. Brushless motors, which do not use brushes, have become more popular in many modern applications due to their improved efficiency and reliability.. but not on our boat!
