Welcome (and please subscribe!) to the oldest sailing channel on YouTube! This video was shot back in 2009 when Elizabeth and Seth took their Lagoon 380 Catamaran halfway around the world from Norfolk, Virginia to Sydney, Australia. Now it's 2020 and we're back cruising, this time with our kids! Please visit our website for more info at https://www.the-sailing-family.com Original Description: Seth and Elizabeth take their boat, Honeymoon, through the Panama Canal. Sailing through difficult reef passages, balancing the risk of being shipwrecked versus the reward of discovering new cruising grounds and amazing turquoise water lagoons. This is what exploring means to us, something that makes us nervous but also excited. These remote islands in the Indian Ocean off of West Sumatra - Indonesia, are an undiscovered gem of the cruising world. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid. This week, we’re drilling our well on our land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. You can go to my sponsor https://aura.com/atticus to try 14 days for free. That’s enough time for Aura to start scrubbing your personal info off these data broker sites, without you lifting a finger. Drilling this Well will be a huge step toward finally moving our cramped 26-foot travel trailer onto the property where we'll have much more room to live as a family. But around here, finding water isn’t guaranteed. Many of our neighbors have had to drill hundreds of feet to hit a usable supply, and every extra foot adds big dollars to the final bill. With two kids under three and a tight budget, the pressure is on. We need this well to deliver enough water for our future home, but if we’re not lucky, the cost could skyrocket before we ever break ground. New to the channel? Before crossing the Indian Ocean the crew sat down to figure out a route and game plan. We needed to get from Asia to Africa, avoiding the worst of the weather and making the most of the monsoon season and trade winds. So, we sat down with two very old school technologies. Our large scale paper chart of the Indian Ocean and the pilot charts compiled from years and years of observations. We had a little discussion, weighed our options, and made a decision as a crew. It was a lot of fun and we learned something. Hope you do as well :) We are planning a little series on how we look at and plan for weather so hope you enjoy this first of many! Our Mission It’s simple really- we just want to make you SMILE! We do this because we LOVE it. Given our short time on this AMAZING PLANET there’s absolutely, positively, nothing more we’d rather be doing with our time! We hope by sharing this adventure you will find some inspiration in your life. If doesn’t have to be sailing. It can be anything at all. Just take a few minutes every day for yourself, breathe deep and relax, and don’t forget to SMILE! Send Us Love We LOVE sailing, we LOVE traveling, and we LOVE making videos about it! We found a really nice cutter-rigged sailboat for sale in Eliot, Maine this week. She's a throwback style of old - canoe stern (or double-ender) with some lovely wood inside. We heard that the owner sailed it from the Atlantic to the Pacific by way of the Panama canal.... and cruised it through the Caribbean before returning to Maine. Designed by German Frers, the Hylas 46 is certainly a beautifully elegant and functional bluewater cruiser. On deck, the center cockpit, teak decks, wide transom, and cutter rig stand out. Below deck, the forward cabin and head design are perfect along with the large aft cabin accessible from both the port and starboard. This is the first Hylas I've been aboard, and I have to say, I'm impressed! This boat has quickly made it to the top of my list for the best bluewater cruising monohulls that I've been aboard. We'd like your help! We've made some very good friends these past years via the project. A lot of which are doing some very cool things. At the last WoodenBoat Show at Mystic Seaport, we met up with a group of them and hatched a plan. Our friends at SAILCARGO have set up a ship yard in Costa Rica and are building a 147ft (45m) cargo ship from sustainably harvested wood with the plan of sailing cargo up and down the west coast of the Americas. Along with building the boat, they also provide some community events, teaching locals classes, including boat building. While we were chatting at the show we and a few other friends decided to all storm the place in February and teach a course on simple forging and tool making techniques. Before we head down there though, we would like to ship down some tools to help with the class and the boatyard. We're asking anyone who would like to help by donating tools or supplies to send us what they have. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) sails 75 miles from Rodney Bay, St.Lucia to Roseau, Dominica with a night stop on the way in Anse Mitan, Martinique. The easterly winds are constantly changing in the lee of the three island’s volcanic peaks; accelerating at their north and south extremities and constant 20kts beam reach in between, leading to a lot of sails adjustments. As we head north to the start of the leeward islands, we are finally off the wind and going like a train! This is how sailing should be while island hopping in the Caribbean.

Are you embarking on a boat project, or frankly any project that will be outdoors or exposed to moisture and the elements. If so, you need to know the difference between the different types of plywood that is available. In this episode, we share the specific differences between standard, exterior or Marine grade plywood. Despite what many may share with you, there is a difference. In this video, we will explain the differences and show examples so you too, can know what to choose and validate what others may tell you. Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have crossed the border to cruise the rugged and beautiful outside coast of Mexico's Baja Penninsula. From the large city of Ensenada, to the extremely remote Islas San Benito we found many stunning vistas, rich wildlife, and excellent sailing. A perfect weather window allowed us to make the last leg into Cabo San Lucas in one long sail from the little village of Abreojos. An ocean passage that began in the frigid waters of San Diego ended in the bathwater warm tropics of the entrance to the Sea of Cortez. Julia is a traditional wooden boat. She was built of cedar, fir, and oak in Desolation Sound in 1960 to Atkin's Ingrid design. She is out to prove that classic yachts are well suited to bluewater cruising, and to have lots of excellent sailing along the way! The home built windvane was made to a design by Bill Belcher in his book Wind-Vane Self Steering. ________________________________________________ music: Flow by Nomyn https://soundcloud.com/nomyn Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: http://bit.ly/-_flow Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/xMOsN82Lqjs

If lightning hits your boat, hope Zeus taps it lightly, like he did Soulianis. After a thunderstorm rolled through St Augustine, Florida, we weren’t even sure if we’d been hit. But the over the next couple of days, we discovered more and more electronics no longer working, and our VHF antenna had been vaporized from the top of our mast. We start an insurance claim, and begin the business of getting to the bottom of our lightning mishap. The boat is hauled out for a survey and electrical inspection. Ultimately the damage found is minimal, and we decide to tackle the broken electronics and mast rewiring after our seasonal migration north to see family and friends. Hope you enjoy! Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 209 In this episode of our boat restoration, we are trying to get ready to go sailing while facing the daily obstacles of boat life. Of course, we always try to make room for the typical "smelling the flowers along the way", which in boat language is more like fishing or going for a kayak session with the doggos. We hope you enjoy watching our journey of growing and learning how to be sea people. We still can't get over how cute (and practical) the dogs' life jackets are! If you think your dog would love it as much as ours does, you can get one here: https://alnk.to/e76FPlY Ben's perfect WindSun hat: https://arntsonmarine.com/products/tahoe-brim 👉 SUBSCRIBE to not miss out on the new episodes: https://bit.ly/3dI3hBn YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR PROJECT: 👉 By becoming a patron - join to unlock exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/sailingyaba 👉 Through Paypal donations: https://bit.ly/3kR4Ezo or sailingyaba@gmail.com 👉 By wearing our products: https://shopsailingyaba.com/ 👉 GET OUR FAVORITE TOOLS: https://www.amazon.com/shop/sailingyaba We are forever grateful to everyone that is living our dream with us ♥️ 🇧🇷 Legendas em Português em todos os episódios! 🇪🇸 Subtítulos en español en todos los episodios! 💙 Who are we? We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. I’ve been wanting to test the Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 for some time and when Covid restrictions were eased sufficiently that we were finally able to get back afloat I leapt at the opportunity - the conditions were perfect. This is a pocket rocket that was designed specifically for shorthanded racing and looks set to do well in an area of our sport that continues to grow by the season.

We set sail on November 23 and left Mindelo, Cape Verde to cross the Atlantic to Grenada, Caribbean. The forecast wasn't optimal and the very light winds were concerning. The first week gave us some sun and company by dolphins but very light winds. And then the squalls showed up on the horizon and started to hit us with lots of rain and thunder. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us. We've restocked a bunch of shirts in merch: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise Check out the latest about "little" Victoria, our tender, in construction: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheArtofBoatBuilding Oftentimes, a woodworker needs to remove a lot of material, after which they follow up with using a series of other tools to sneak in on the final shape. Sometimes as many as 6 tools could be used for something like this, but oftentimes it's 3 or 4. The chainsaw is a wonderful tool for freeform shaping... it removes a lot of material, and the small chainsaw Steve uses here is easy to control. It does get awfully warm as it goes through the bone-dry oak, which means the chain expands and gets a little loose on its bar, but we're sure everyone in the comments section will already know that and won't say a dingdang thing. ;) NBC's Today Show came to film us, and we show you a bit of how that looked and felt for the crew. It's a nice behind-the-scenes moment. We hope you've seen their piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umb5_mna07o We get to a really big gluing job: putting the house sides down to the grub. We use 3M 4200 to bed the entire surface between the sides of the cabin house and deck/sill/grub, and large, custom bolts hold everything together as well. The talented Paul D. has been hard at work on the paddle boards featured in this episode, and we are so very grateful for his skill, his generosity of time and spirit, and his thoughtfulness in making something that we will so very much enjoy. We hope to be able to meet him in person someday. Our first sailboat for sale in 2023 is a 1975 Alden 58 Boothbay Challenger Ketch rig for $139,500USD. We found this alden classic sailboat for sale to be not only handsome but also as spacious as you might imagine a 58-foot sailboat would be. One nice part of this offering is that there is a survey in the works so any potential buyer should have that readily available without investing any time/money to understand any potential issues. ======= CAPT Q MERCH ===== https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaptainQYachtHunter ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help??
