We explore Kodiak city and some of the surroundings before setting sail north. Our next destination in Alaska is Afognak Island, one of the islands in the Kodiak archipelago. You can really say that the anchorage lived up to all the expectations we’ve had for Alaska. This is why we sailed up here! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. In this episode we prepare to set sail to Long Island for my brother and his girlfriends first passage on Gypsy Moon. Right from the get go we face issues with the engine not starting and it just continues to go downhill from there. Luckily we worked well together as a team to get things sorted and were able to sail smoothly the rest of the way... That is until the sun goes down and I get VERY sick as we approach the anchorage. We had some problems in our boat this week, of course, you might think, it’sa boat and boats always have problems. Well, that’s what make us like boats, there is always something new to keep you entertained. Filmed in September 2022. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). Crossing the Gulf is a big milestone and right of passage for any sailor heading south. With a swift northern current churning up extra chop it can make for a bumpy ride. We've heard plenty of horror stories, but know to take all that dock talk with a grain of salt. Firsthand experience wins out every time, and we were anxious to be making our biggest, longest crossing yet. We thought we picked a perfect weather window; either way it was our only option as we were on a tight timeline. Making plans with a sailboat is a dangerous game... It turns out we've still got a lot to learn about passage planning. This overnight sail gave us plenty of time to ponder life's biggest mysteries; whether the ocean makes a sound if no one is around on a boat to hear it, whether our boat will hold together long enough to get us safely to shore, and geometric algebra for offshore navigation. Upon arrival in the Bahamas, we contemplate our sanity for deciding to set off in the face of a cold front (which had spawned deadly tornadoes the night prior), and face our first major squall on the water. It’s finally starting to feel like we’re cruising! In this episode, we prep for our longest sail yet: 190 miles from St. Joseph Point to Clearwater. We give you a peak inside our ditch kit, install a MOB (man overboard) device in each of our lifejackets, and test our PLB (personal locating beacon). Then, we set sail! We have an amazing downwind wing-on-wing daysail to our overnight anchorage, spend a horrible night on the hook and wake up early to get tossed around in rolly seas. The first part of our passage is marked by visits from dozens of dolphins, and we don’t see another ship for over 24 hours while crossing the Gulf of Mexico, all alone. Hope you enjoy!
