Our boat wasn’t ready for full-time cruising when we bought her. This was perfectly fine; we’d rather add necessary items ourselves and learn them inside and out through the process, than pay for systems already in place that may not be exactly what we want, or are old and need to replacing anyway. We had completed a bunch of projects in Wisconsin before leaving on our trip down the river (like upgrading our anchoring system), but a few big projects still needed to be done before we could take off to more remote, sunnier locales. Project #1: Install an arch/bimini combo to provide shade for the cockpit, a place to mount solar panels and davits to hang our dinghy. Project #2: Our electrical system needed an upgrade. Our battery bank was old and small. We wanted to double our bank from two to four, install a battery monitor, solar charge controllers, and clean up/rewire anything already in place that might be a potential fire hazard, or was just a bit sketchy. The question was this: DIY or hire a contractor? The electrical project was a massive undertaking, something neither of us knew much about, so we’d first have to invest a lot of time hitting the books, trying to understand the basics of electrical wiring and energy storage. Time is money, and we contemplated hiring someone, as it might’ve made more sense if we spent that time working our “real” jobs to pay it off instead. In the end, we decided to DIY the electrical project, since all the skills we’d acquire would be useful for any other electrical project/troubleshooting we’d be doing in the future if WE knew our own boat’s electrical system from the ground up. As for the arch/bimini, because we wanted a custom look that required a skilled tradesman (as well as a bunch of machinery we didn’t own or have access to) we felt it made sense to hire a professional, or so we thought… Here’s how our decisions played out… Pop the corn and settle in for this 20-minuter! Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. 🇬🇧 Pip Hare explains that she doesn’t know how it happened. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. I sail solo to and from Ireland's famous Fastnet Rock, a distance of about 1000 nm. I experience everything from dead calm to near gale conditions, including a stressful crossing of a shipping channel in a fog bank. This was a 'Bucket List' sail for me.
We're braving the cold winter in Maine to bring you a 1984 Nauticat 33 Ketch-rigged Motor Sailer sailboat for sale. This sailboat just had a full survey done on her with suggested repairs totaling $23,000USD... which will be very helpful for the next owner (and also during negotiation). Boat work is a major part of any sailing circumnavigation. A broken VHF radio, broken bilge pump, life raft needing a service and rusted anchor chain needing replacement. Arrived in la linea de la conception had an awful 5 months of hell then we broke free and escaped the meditaranean Sea to join the Atlantic ocean with risk of Piracy & Orca attacks on ships. We had been well prepared for the situation and dealt with the following problems that arose that day with precision. We got attacked just outside tarifa by 4 orcas on the 16/4/2021 but they are known for attacking boats all up the African, Spanish & Portuguese coasts. 🌊🌊🌊⛵🌊🌊🌊🤘🏿 Order of things we did was kill the engine, kill electrics and any other gadgets you have on board, reduce the gib sheet quarter of its size as to still have steering and slight control of movement, throw paper overboard as a distraction for the orcas, counter the steering by centering it to reduce the risk of braking the rudders and connection points, remain calm and quiet and I eventually turned the radio off as it was a bad idea to radio through due to the noise/frequency it produces plus I couldn't understand a word.

We’re stuck in Fort Lauderdale and making the best of the time here. Our packing gland is dripping way too much. It’s lock nut appears to be chemically welded shut. After soaking it in PBJ, and two professionals checking it out, it’s been decided we need to pull Isabella and place her on the hard to get it fixed. Great, the earliest anyone can haul us out is in over two weeks! Still, we’re making the best of things by doing some projects like fixing leaks and some partying. Welcome to the first video in our new Atlantic crossing series! Back in 2019, we crossed the Atlantic for the first time, from Europe to the Caribbean. This year, we crossed the Atlantic back to Europe, and we will be closing the loop at the end of the year with a 3rd transatlantic. In this video, we share with you how we equipped Polar Seal, our Beneteau Oceanis 40 from 2007, for this particular type of sailing. We go through sails, rigging, self-steering, power systems, and the few details that have made life offshore a lot more comfortable. This week, we take a look at a 1985 Little Harbor 46 Ketch classic bluewater sailboat for sale. This one was primarily used as a daysailor by a gentleman who would take it out 3x a week and keep it at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI. It's a fantastic Ted Hood Sailboat design (although Ted didn't love ketches or yawls) perfect for offshore bluewater sailing. We think the price of $119,000 is a fantastic deal on this classic sailboat for sale in sparkling condition. ======= CAPT Q MERCH ===== https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaptainQYachtHunter ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help?? For more review, test, performance data, captain reports and more about the 2015 Sea Ray 470 Sundancer, go to http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?ID=3281&ref=YT The venerable 470 Sundancer has been around for years but this latest redesign significantly alters the boat. Previously, her primary focus was as a dayboat for sunning and entertaining a small homogeneous group. For 2015, the new 470 Sundancer has an enclosed coupe and the layout was designed as one continuous entertaining space between the exterior cockpit, interior salon and fore-and-aft settee adjacent to the two-person helm. Below, there is a much larger mid cabin with a diagonal queen bed. The result is, that while the overall dimensions remain the same, weight has been increased 20% to 34,300 lbs. (15,558 kg) over the 2011 model we last tested. The design is much more versatile for entertaining and more comfortable below for luxury cruising.
To help support our videos and get access to ad free episodes check out https://www.patreon.com/projectatticus I worry a lot while we sail around the world I worry about running into reefs I worry about needing a hospital in the middle of nowhere I worry about hurricanes and squalls But lately what I’ve been worrying about the most… is foreign governments Due to some issues with insurance documents and expired licenses, we’ve been unsuccessfully trying to check our boat into Greece for over a week. And after exhausting every solution we could think of we have one final idea to try, one last hail mary which, if it succeeds, will open the door to the Mediterranean's most beautiful cruising ground, and if it fails… well then we’re F@^&*%# And to further complicate the situation Desiree’s sister and Fiancee are flying all the way from the States to visit us. So this week the four of us… well 5… ok 6 The six of us are on a journey to appease the Greek goddess of bureaucracy and hopefully become legal visitors of this beautiful country. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. SAILING LIFE - she hoists the GENNAKER alone. Our sail life is a bit different this time. Boat life is for us also slowing down, exploring, and staying a while on one spot. Sailing through Greece without the possibility to go on land, changes our sailing life. Less slowing down, and this shows also in our vlogs full with a lot of sailing and adventures. Every day sailing, hoisting the gennaker, a new spot every day to admire, and in this episode even swimming with jellyfish. We love living on a sailing boat and our life at sea. We got stuck in a storm at anchor! In this episode we complete our boat work and sail to the Isles of Scilly. We also endure a storm at anchor and call a Mayday Relay for another yacht, which was blown onto the rocks. Sorry for the lack of footage - we were busy keeping our boat safe and talking to the coastguard. We thought it was important, however, to share what we learned from this experience. Thanks for watching our sailing vlog; we hope you enjoyed it. We tried to keep it short and sweet, but if you’d like to know more about what happened in the Isles of Scilly, you can read our full account in this blog post: http://sailingkittiwake.com/sailing-isles-scilly-baptism-fire/. OLD SAILORS GET SHIT DONE T-SHIRT! 6 days left to buy!! http://bonfire.com/abandoncomfort UNCLE SCOTT, RANDI & JORDAN (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsVjvlRBIbWVTFtQXemzXqA) Thank you. We seriously couldn't have done this without you. Your backs are probably still sore from your day spent with your favorite slavedrivers :) THE NITTY GRITTY ON THE TEAK REMOVAL PROCESS: The FWD half of the boat and AFT deck was very easy to remove. No need to plane, heat up the adhesive or use an air chisel. Midships was very difficult to remove and in great shape. If the whole boat was in the shape of the midships planks we wouldn't be pulling 16 hour days hunched over - we'd be on some white sandy beach somewhere south with the original teak still on Luci. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Our best practices for removing stubborn teak & not damaging the gelcoat: 1. Use pipe cutter drill bits to carve out around teak plugs 2. Flathead to pry out plugs & drill out screws 3. Use planer to reduce size of plank 4. Use heat gun to aid in removal of devils glue 33-year-old adhesive 5. Use hammer & flathead to carefully remove plank 6. Use oscillating tool to remove leftover adhesive 7. 60 grit to remove remaining stubborn adhesive 8. Drill out existing screw holes to aid in epoxy adhesion 9. Vacuum everything - especially deep into the screw holes 10. Prep & fill pre-existing screw holes with thickened epoxy Learn About All the Ways You Can Support Our Show: http://AbandonComfort.com/support Follow us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2pMPpxf Like us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2pLGd9M **Want to support us without costing you anything?** Seriously, this won't cost you a dime and it really makes a huge impact on our abilities to produce full-time and not having to worry about working other jobs. Die junge walisische Werft Swallow Yachts baut GFK-Boote im klassischen Look, der eher gemütliches Segeln verheißt. Doch weit gefehlt
This is an alternative to buying a bigger adventure boat. Made in Finland, outboard powered and sleeping for FOUR people in TWO cabins on a boat thats under 30ft and totally rips with a couple 225HP Mercs one a super sweet hull that will allow you to still run fast offshore in moderate conditions. The Flipper 900ST seems like it's been hiding out of sight to me but now that i've spent a day onboard i'm embarrased for not paying more attention to it. This is a high quality boat that deserves the attention because she packs a lot into a little boat and is built to withstand the Aussie climate and looks like a boat that will look after you for a long time. Flipper is under the umbrella of the Nimbus Group from Sweden but this boat is built in Finland. I understand this company has been around for decades and they have a race boat heritage which makes sense considering she'll hit close to 40kts with the smallest motors so should easily be a 50kt weapon with the twin 300hp! Have a watch and tell me if you agree with my thought process on this boat?
