We're now ready to begin our journey from Yorkshire to the Fens via the tidal Trent and out into the Wash. Are we and the boat ready for this big trip? After finding a leak in the engine bay, it seems there are more maintenance jobs to undertake, but we won't let this stop us from slipping the lines and getting our toes wet once more. We give a little overview of our proposed journey, which takes us onto the River Trent. It's tidal and meandering, and we've never taken a canal boat onto this type of body of water. I thought this would be a straightforward job… swap out the old freshwater pump and fit a new one. It wasn’t. The new pump looked identical, but the quick-fit connectors were just slightly different — enough that nothing would fit. So instead of a simple replacement, this turned into something else entirely… A proper “Franken pump” build using parts from both the old and new units. Join us aboard Polaris for the final chapter of an unforgettable sailing season in Arctic Norway. In this episode, we cruise from Bjarkøy towards Finnsnes, navigating narrow shallow channels, tidal currents, fishing buoys, low clearance cables and shifting autumn winds along the Norwegian coast. We visit the beautiful island of Bjarkøy, once an important Viking centre, explore the harbour, forage for porcini mushrooms and witness the first Northern Lights of the season — a clear sign that winter is closing in fast. After a long and intense sailing year covering around 2,400–2,500 nautical miles, including adventures to Svalbard, the Norwegian coast, Tromsø and the Lofoten and Senja region, it is time to prepare Polaris for the harsh northern winter. We winterise the engine and generator with glycol, remove solar panels, protect the boat from snow and freezing temperatures, insulate the windows, drain the water system and set up remote monitoring to keep the boat safe through temperatures as low as -20°C. The episode ends with a glimpse of winter life in Arctic Norway, including ski touring, frozen landscapes and remote cabin life — before the next sailing season begins. DIY easy docking, dolphins, dancing, generator woes, and tall ship It’s a real stretch to reach dock lines when coming into our slip. Solution...build an extension to the dock steps for easier line retrieval. We attached a piece of 2 X 4 to the step handle that can swivel out over the edge of the dock. Before going out, a dock line is hung over the extension. It is so much easier to hook that line; if only catching a fish was as easy. Our day sail had to be cut short. Just as we were about to raise the sail a noise from the engine room caught our attention. Some of the screws on the engine shroud were rattling and coming loose. That was not acceptable, no sailing and back to dock we had to go. Not all was lost as there were several dolphins nearby swimming and gliding effortlessly in the water. Gotta love those dolphins! During a land trip we were lucky to catch a USCG tall ship, the Barque Eagle. She was in dock and available for a quick tour. The vessel appears to be steel hulled, is 295 feet in length and was built in 1936. The US Coast Guard uses her for training and she carries a crew of about 50 when out at sea. It’s always a thrill to be able to go onboard such a huge boat. After much diagnosing and replacing parts, our generator still fails to run without the glow plug being constantly energized on startup. So...it’s time to call in a professional for assistance. We will keep you posted as to how that goes in an upcoming episode. Still having fun living on Isabella. Karen dances all over the deck and both she and Steve do a bit of Tai Chi. Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. My name is Mark Reuten, and this video is part of the Poulsbo Boat Project, where I’m documenting the complete build of a modern Poulsbo Boat from start to finish. Back in the shop after a long delay, I finally get back to work on the Poulsbo Boat Project. In this episode I set up the station molds on the strongback, align the building jig, and start fitting the backbone components. I also run into a frustrating issue: the transom shape isn’t agreeing with the mold the way it should. Rather than ignore the problem, I walk through how I diagnose fit issues, rethink the geometry, and make practical adjustments so the finished hull will look right. Along the way, I reshape the hawse holes, refine the transom, and talk a bit about the reality of wooden boat building: technical problem solving mixed with a whole lot of hard graft. The Poulsbo Boat is being built using traditional wooden boat building techniques combined with practical modern methods where appropriate. Throughout this series you'll see the full process including lofting, milling lumber, laminating structural parts, strip planking, fiberglassing, interior joinery, and final fit-out. Our sail from Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Islands started off absolutely perfect… warm winds, beautiful seas, and another unforgettable Caribbean passage aboard SV Wildly Intrepid. But once we arrived in St. Thomas, things got interesting fast. We explored the abandoned tunnels of Fort Segarra on Water Island, tucked deep inside a hidden military bunker overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Then we escaped strong easterly winds in the crowded anchorage of Christmas Cove before sailing into the heart of Charlotte Amalie — one of the most historic and pirate-filled towns in the Caribbean. From riding local dollar safari buses to climbing up to Blackbeard’s Castle for incredible harbour views, this island had so much character. But one hike turned into a total disaster when we ended up bushwhacking through sharp thorns in the blazing heat… definitely not the adventure we planned. We got a lot accomplished today, and it's a good thing because we're only 6 days from splashing! Shawn commissioned the Victron gear which means we have AC power! That means our appliances work! We also started to pretty up the boat before she goes back in, and after an entire day of work, the starboard hull below the chine is shiny and reflective. Big improvement!

Finally back to sailing videos! In early September of 2025, we departed Tahiti with our dependable crew Mike for our sail to Tonga, which is approximately 1,500 nautical miles. This trip is notorious because there is a squash zone in the middle where low pressures coming east from New Zealand trip up the trade winds and can bring some wild weather to this area. We danced with the low-pressure systems by going north and south a hundred miles frequently along this westbound route with our trusty weather routers' advice. Ancoramos na Enseada de Botafogo e vivemos dias incríveis com o Pão de Açúcar como quintal, mas nem tudo foi perfeito. Além de mostrar a rotina, as vantagens e a logística de viver a bordo na capital carioca, compartilhamos um grande susto que passamos com o nosso bote de apoio: o motor parou durante um vento forte e quase fomos levados para alto mar. Salut les loulous ⚓⛵ Le vent s’est levé aujourd’hui avec des rafales à 25 nœuds. À l’arrière du bateau, les déferlantes de 2,50 m se succèdent sans relâche. L’air est chargé d’une poussière rouge venue du désert, qui finit par se déposer partout sur le pont, donnant au bateau une étrange teinte ocre. Je profite d’un moment plus calme pour vérifier l’ancre : tout est nickel, elle ne bouge pas. Petite intervention ensuite sur l’alternateur ; un fil s’était dévissé. Rien de grave, mais il valait mieux s’en occuper rapidement. Je tente aussi une nouvelle expérience à bord : la fabrication d’un pain de 250 g. Le résultat est encourageant, même s’il reste encore quelques progrès à faire. En fin de journée, je prépare un apéritif à partir d’une recette qu’on m’a donnée : un mélange de rhum, de jus d’orange et de sucre de canne. Simple et parfait . Plus tard, balade sur l’immense plage de Sal Rei. Le lieu est splendide : une eau turquoise, un sable éclatant et une impression d’espace infini. Le lendemain, départ pour une promenade au nord de l’île jusqu’à une petite chapelle isolée.
