This Memorial Day Weekend journey north has been a family tradition for the last 17 years that was interrupted in 2025 when I made the trip solo due to concerns with the low water and weed infestation. Last year I wasn't confident that I could make it into Wave Pointe so I went alone in case I had to turn around and return to Green Bay. Thanks again for watching. Jason recalls the journey so far in this first of a planned near daily live recounting their Great Loop progress.

It was a stop-start day for the fleet in Tenby when the early breeze that the fleet launched in petered out and the fleet was sent back to shore for a couple of hours. During the break ashore an impromptu game of cricket started on the beach, while others sorted hydration issues at the clubhouse, settling into a swift pint. With the tide coming in, the sailors on the beach had to gradually pull their boats up the sand, but thankfully after a two hour postponement a sea breeze was starting to fill in and the fleet went back out on to the water. Getting the race away proved problematic. Gate starts are notoriously difficult in light winds, and the fleet were a touch too eager to get racing, especially those who had gathered on the western end ready for the pathfinder to cross. Two attempts ended in failure, which was clearly getting on the nerves of the pathfinder boat, which was none other than Will Pank, with his crew Matilda Wilson. On the third attempt a vociferous Will ordered the fleet to go low enough so that he and the gate boat behind him could pass them on port tack and the race could get underway. We start with some of the action ashore, including the cricket, then move onto the epic fail gate start, then the windward mark rounding, then the finish. For the past year, we've lived almost entirely at anchor aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, The Alaskan Gypsy. But there's been one problem we haven't been able to ignore... our anchor gear. After dragging anchor more times than we'd like to admit, it became clear something wasn't right. Before another Alaska winter, it was time to replace the Gypsy's original 250-pound custom Danforth anchor with a 200-pound Navy stockless anchor and a new chain concept. Simple enough...or so we thought. From using the community crane dock in Tenakee Springs to discovering our old anchor was badly bent, measuring decades-old chain, wrestling shackles, and wondering if the new setup would even fit the windlass, this project turned into more than a simple swap. And even after everything was installed...there was still one more problem waiting for us. Life aboard isn't just about sailing from one beautiful place to the next. Sometimes it's about solving the problems that keep your home safe when the weather turns and there's no dock to tie up to. This weekend I squeezed my wife, son and dog into our inflatable kayak and headed out along the coast in search of a couple of remote beaches that can only really be reached from the water. We left Hout Bay after weeks of boat work and paperwork, ready to see a little more of South Africa before saying goodbye to it for good. First stop: anchoring beneath Table Mountain in Cape Town — a view we didn't need to go ashore to appreciate. From there, we sailed to Dassen Island, a protected seabird sanctuary off the West Coast, where freezing conditions and a dinghy full of nerves led us straight into hundreds of breaching whales. The next morning, with the spinnaker up and whales still surfacing on every side, we sailed the final stretch to Langebaan — dodging humpbacks the whole way and racing our friends aboard Rolling Stones for good measure. The Offshore Marathon has Begun The 50th Anniversary RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race started with cannon fire from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line in Cowes, marking the start of one of offshore sailing’s greatest challenges. In bright sunshine, the 32 competing boats, crewed by 182 sailors from five continents, made a clean start, beating to windward in a light easterly breeze. The line was all clear and the fleet was soon racing east out of the Solent. Ahead lies a 1,805-nautical-mile course around some of the most exposed waters in northern Europe, and undoubtedly plenty of twists and turns along the way. From the tidal headlands of the English Channel to the west coast of Ireland, St Kilda and the Shetland Islands, plus the complexity of the North Sea, this race will test boats and crews to their limits. RORC Commodore Deb Fish knows the Round Britain and Ireland Race exceptionally well. She navigated Incisor of Wight to overall victory in 2000 and returned in 2022, racing double-handed with Rob Craigie on Bellino tofinish second overall by just seven minutes after IRC time correction. Velankommet til Menorca! Vores første længere sejlads, bare os to! Det er gået vildt godt, på trods af at vi ikke fangede nogen fisk?? Vi tror, havtemperaturen er for høj, men vi forsøgte ellers også ved solnedgang og solopgang.Så vi må lige researche lidt! Men vi kom helskindet gennem vores lange tomandssejlads, helt uden det store besvær. Vi er klar på at gøre det igen. Det er ikke, fordi vi ikke vidste, vi kunne gøre det, men det var jo interessant at finde ud af, hvor hårdt det egentlig ville være. Og nu var det jo “bare” to dage, hvor rutinerne ikke har sat ind endnu ift. når man skal på de lange sejladser, som strækker sig over mere end 5 dage.Vi kommer nok ikke til at tage sådan en tur, før vi sætter sejl fra De Kanariske Øer til november. Og til jer, som kan blive lidt nervøse over vores brug af redningsveste: Så ved vi godt, hvornår de skal bæres, men vi kan ikke rende rundt i dem hele tiden, for så ville vi dø af varme. 😎
