GRACE - my WELSFORD 'Tread Lightly' yacht. There were loads of little scratches, rubs and nicks/bumps as well as some gravel rash and a bit of paint wear on the chines and bottom - from the trailer rollers. The hull was sanded, given 2 (or in some places 3) coats of primer/undercoat and 2x coats of Marine gloss enamel. Cabin exterior and both transoms were also sanded and have 4-6 coats of Goldspar varnish. Rub rails were removed, sanded, undercoated and have 2 coats of paint. Blue stripe was re-painted as were the letters for her name. Decks were given 2x coats of Don't Slip/Kiwi Grip, and new poly/foam deck padding was glued in the cockpit. Whew! It started with scratches, but Grace has 11 years of use under her belt - I'm happy!

On passe par toute la gamme des émotions dans cet épisode ! Après un solide échouage dans l’Intracoastal, on enchaîne plusieurs jours de navigation au moteur dans les canaux pour atteindre la magnifique ville de Charleston, SC… en plein festival de musique. Entre les échouages et les vagues, on finit par choisir le large pour une longue traversée de 155 milles nautiques, mais notre pilote automatique choisit ce moment pour nous lâcher. L’arrivée à Fernandina Beach, FL, est mouvementée : on se fait brasser dans l'inlet, et on découvre une vibration un peu inquiétante venant de l’hélice. Le passage par la mer est définitivement plus rapide si l'objectif est de rejoindre le sud, mais demande plus d'endurance et un voilier capable d'en prendre plus que la navigation sur ICW. Mais, dans l'ICW, il faut constamment suivre un chemin GPS mis à jour fréquemment comme la "track" de bob423, parce que même avec 4.5 pieds de tirant d'eau, on a frotté le fond parfois en plein milieu du chenal. Il y a des mouillages tout le long de l'ICW mais méfiez-vous des haut-fonds. Les cartes ne sont pas toujours à jour. St-Augustine est une très belle place pour trouver tout ce dont on a besoin pour les travaux de bateau. De plus, ça demeure une des dernières place où on peut prendre un mooring ou mettre l'ancre à moindre coût. Le reste de la Floride est de plus en plus réglementé pour les petits navigateurs de plaisance que nous sommes. In this video I take a detailed, respectful look at the loss of Lyle Babington and his vessel Molly in August of this year. Using the Marine Accident Investigation Branch reports and recommendations, we go step by step through the chain of events that led from a small defect to a catastrophic outcome. This is not finger-pointing. This is seamanship. As I reviewed the MAIB findings and spent time on Lyle’s own YouTube channel, what emerged was a man with enormous drive, imagination, and a genuine love of being afloat. He pushed himself. He built things. He chased horizons. His passing leaves a hole for his family, friends, and for the community who followed his adventures. My hope with this video is simple: that we can draw something meaningful from Mollie’s story — a legacy of practical vigilance, humility, and learning — that every one of us can carry forward at sea. In this episode Trio Travels along with some of our best friends as crew transits the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific. We transit the first lock in the dark and with a 38' monohull sailboat tied to our side and we spend the night in Gatun Lake tide up to a huge floating cement mooring ball. Ben explains how a laser level has been used during the process of fixing floors and frames for the build of John Alden's schooner design, Malabar IV. The second part of the film shows Sam Langhout and Corin Nelson-Smith (volunteers) making a pattern for a laminated frame, using the loft floor to make a pattern, transferring that onto the timber and then the process of 'lamination' to build this type of frame, which you also see being fitted.
