What starts as a World Cup watch party leads to some of the most surprising encounters on the island: tasting "miracle fruit" that completely flips your tastebuds, touring native Jataí stingless bees with local keeper André, and hiking up jungle trails surrounded by local dogs. Later, we leave Vila do Abraão on foot to explore the wild history of Ilha Grande. Proud, experienced, and unwilling to yield, he tried to force his ship around the Cape in a violent storm. It’s been a very busy 12 months for Australian sailor Stacey Jackson - and the next 12 months looks just as busy! We caught up with Stacey dockside after Day 2 of Hamilton Island Race Week fresh from a breezy race aboard Greg Watson’s HH42 Touche 42. We talked to Stacey about Race Week, the upcoming Women’s International Competition at New York Yacht Club (David Ferguson and Scott Lawson, generously loaned their ILC 37 Mittere to both Australian teams for training) and the Jolt team’s planned reprise of last year’s win at next year’s Admiral’s Cup.

Não há separação entre humano e natureza. Não há separação entre clima e queima de petróleo. Qual lei você criaria? 🇫🇷 Essayez de réparer votre nouvelle machine à laver et vous verrez qu’elle est irréparable. Essayez de garder le même téléphone portable pendant 10 ans et vous verrez que les applications cessent de fonctionner. Essayez de ne pas prendre l’avion et demandez-vous pourquoi le Brésil a démantelé ses lignes ferroviaires. Essayez de prendre des douches courtes et demandez-vous combien d’eau consomment les centres de données. Essayez de ne pas utiliser de plastique, et acceptez le fait que les chaînes logistiques sont plastifiées. Essayez de recycler, et découvrez que les plastiques sont mélangés, et que le recyclage est devenu un prétexte pour produire davantage. Essayez d’être cohérent, et demandez à vos parents quand cela est devenu si difficile (voire impossible). Nous n’avons plus le temps de nous contenter de micro-gestes. Ce n’est pas la prise de conscience qui manque. Nous n’avons pas besoin de davantage de microplastiques dans l’eau ni d’une nouvelle pluie dans le Rio Grande do Sul. Nous avons besoin de lois. Try not to fly and ask why Brazil dismantled its rail lines. Try taking short showers and ask how much water data centers consume. Try not to use plastic, and accept that supply chains are plastic-dependent. Try recycling, and discover that plastics are mixed, and that recycling has become an excuse to produce more. Try to be consistent, and ask your parents when it became so difficult (or impossible). We no longer have time for mere micro-gestures. It’s not a lack of awareness. We don’t need more microplastics in the water, or another flood in Rio Grande do Sul. We need laws. We need influencers, representatives, investors, lawmakers, judges, CEOs, artists, packaging designers, and advertisers to do what they do best—for our sake, for the sake of our old age, and for the sake of the children who have already been born. There is no separation between humans and nature. There is no separation between climate change and the burning of oil. What law would you create?

🇧🇷 Fico toda coberta e fechada dentro do barco em cativeiro enquanto meus inimigos estão sentadinhos ao vento por todo o convés, apenas esperando um momento oportuno para me atacar. Inevitalmente, tenho que ajustar as velas durante a noite. Não acendo a lanterna para não atraí-los, e salto o mais rapido que posso para os cabos e faço os ajustes. Em tudo que toco, sinto a textura característica de esmagamento mosquital. Eles vem como uma nuvem sobre mim, e dou pulinhos ágeis para não se grudarem nos casacos. Apesar da chuva, na manhã seguinte, eles continuam aqui, com novos amigos mais numerosos. As pessoas me acisaram pra trazer bear spray e nada de mosquito spray. Tenho apenas vinagre. Tento reconquistar meu territorio com essa arma química eco-resposavel do cotidiano. 🇫🇷 Je reste toute recouverte et enfermée à l’intérieur du bateau, comme une captivite, tandis que mes ennemis sont confortablement assis au vent sur tout le pont, attendant le moment propice pour m’attaquer. Inévitablement, je dois ajuster les voiles pendant la nuit. Je n’allume pas la lanterne pour ne pas les attirer, et je saute aussi vite que possible vers les bouts pour faire les réglages. Tout ce que je touche, je sens cette texture caractéristique des moustiques écrasés. On m’a dit d’apporter du spray anti-ours, pas de spray anti-moustiques. Je n’ai que du vinaigre. J’essaie de reconquérir mon territoire avec cette arme chimique écologique du quotidien. 🇱🇷 I’m all bundled up and cooped up inside the boat, held captive, while my enemies sit out all over the deck, just waiting for the right moment to attack me. Inevitably, I have to adjust the sails during the night. I don’t turn on the lantern so as not to attract them, and I leap as fast as I can to the ropes and make the adjustments. Everything I touch has that distinctive squishy mosquito texture. They swarm over me like a cloud, and I hop nimbly to keep them from sticking to my clothes. The next morning they’re still here, joined by even more of their friends. People warned me to bring bear spray, not mosquito spray. All I have is vinegar. I try to reclaim my territory with this eco-friendly, everyday chemical weapon.

🇧🇷 Quanto aprendo, mais mudo e mais vivo em contradição. Amo os peixes, sei que os estoques pesqueiros estão acabando, e faço amizade com pescadores; detesto as redes sociais e publico nelas; como quase todos os veleiros, o meu também tem um motor à diesel para manobras no porto que me enche de dor de cabeça. Fujo do plástico com todas as forças e não passo uma hora da vida sem tocar em plástico, vestir plástico, até o o maldito sachê de chá vira “chá de microplástico” na água quente. Essa dissonância cognitiva é por falta de esforço pessoal ou é só sintoma de que microgestos individuais tem limite? Que enquanto não nos unirmos como profissionais e líderes responsáveis para evoluir as leis, as indústrias e os governos, vamos estar só desviando a atenção do problema? Alguma coisa hoje te fez sentir assim? 🇫🇷 Plus j’apprends, plus je change et plus je vis dans la contradiction. J’aime les poissons et je me lie d’amitié avec des pêcheurs, je déteste les réseaux sociaux et j’y publie ; comme presque tous les voiliers, le mien est équipé d’un petit moteur diesel qui me donne des maux de tête. Je fuis le plastique de toutes mes forces et je ne passe pas une heure de ma vie sans toucher du plastique, sans porter du plastique ; même ce maudit sachet de thé se transforme en « thé aux microplastiques » dans l’eau chaude. Cette dissonance cognitive est-elle due à un manque d’effort personnel ou est-ce simplement le signe que nos micro-gestes individuels ont leurs limites ? Quelque chose t’a-t-il fait ressentir cela aujourd’hui ? 🇱🇷 The more I learn, the more I change and the more I live in contradiction. I love fish, I know that fish stocks are running out, and I befriend fishermen; I hate social media and yet I post on it; like almost all sailboats, mine also has a diesel engine for maneuvering in the harbor, which is a constant headache for me. I avoid plastic with all my might, yet I can’t go an hour without touching plastic or wearing plastic—even that damned tea bag turns into “microplastic tea” in hot water. Is this cognitive dissonance due to a lack of personal effort, or is it just a symptom of the fact that individual micro-actions have their limits? That until we come together as responsible professionals and leaders to push for changes in laws, industries, and governments, we’ll just be diverting attention from the problem? Did anything today make you feel this way?
