Six days into our Atlantic crossing, the ocean is finally starting to show its teeth. The crew is back together—Brett, Ayanna, Jade, Dingo, and Penny—and we’re settling into the long middle stretch of life at sea. Days blur together with watches, editing, cooking, small routines, and the constant motion of the boat. At night, the water glows with bioluminescence. Behind us, the stars are coming back as we move farther from Saharan dust drifting off Africa. But conditions are changing. The wind has built past 20 knots, speeds are climbing, and forecasts show larger seas ahead—15 feet and beyond. With the boat starting to roll more aggressively, this will likely be our last video for a short while as we shift focus fully to sailing and safety. If uploads pause, everything is okay. With a break in the weather, it’s finally time to cast off from La Ciotat and continue our voyage west along the French coast. It’s a very early start for us—alarms ringing before 4am—before settling in for a 14-hour passage toward a small marina in Carnon. It may not be classic Instagram territory, but Carnon turns out to be a hidden gem: a calm, protected berth, friendly locals, and cafés and ice creams just steps from Helios. Exactly what tired sailors need after a long day at sea. The next morning, we head out for a celebratory breakfast for Richard’s birthday before pointing Helios toward the famous Cap d’Agde—known worldwide for its huge nudist village and sprawling beach. For us, though, it’s another fantastic marina stopover with all the chandleries we’ve been hoping for. And perhaps… a little visit to the village? That’s for next week. They lost their home, their boat and nearly everything they owned. Showing remarkable resilience they managed to escape the island of Lençois aboard an open top catamaran by bartering what they could salvage from the wreck. The Catamaran delivered them, soaked and salty, to the mainland, where they exchanged their $25 000 salvaged water maker, for a 500 mile ride in the back of a ute to reach the safety of our floating home in Belem. Proceeds from the event help support the Northwest Maritime’s women- and girls-centered educational maritime programs, including the Girls’ Boat Project. Join us in Port Townsend on March 7, 2026 for the next edition of this beloved event. Susan has lived on two continents, sailed on two oceans, and lived in two genders. They have spent their life working as a deckhand mate and captain on the schooners Pride of Baltimore, Charlotte Ann, Lady Maryland, Woodwind and Sultana, as well as many Chesapeake Bay traditional workboats. Susan was a shipwright, calker and rigger on the building of the Lady Maryland and the Pride of Baltimore II, and the Kalmar Nyckel, as well as the restoration of the Gazela Primeiro and the USS Constitution. In 2018 they began working for the schooner Adventuress in their office here in Port Townsend, and in 2021 they were the recipient of Tall Ships America’s - Lifetime Achievement award. Susan is now enjoying retirement in Port Townsend with her soulmate of 43 years Cindy. This week, I’m finishing the LP SmartSide siding on the shed, and it’s a perfect example of that process. Nothing felt natural at first. Every step was slow, awkward, and inefficient. But as the days went on, repetition started to matter, things began to click, and by the end I finally felt comfortable with the work. That learning curve — going from uncertainty to confidence through doing — is something I’ve come to really appreciate about building this place. Along the way, we also took time to step away from the work: hiking a trail right next to our property with views into the Smoky Mountains, wandering through a festive downtown Bryson City, and visiting a local farm (including some very cool Scottish Highland cows).
