Finally arriving in safe harbor at Deltaville allows them to recoup and prepare for seeing whether their DIY solar powered boat can take them across the Chesapeake Bay to catch a glimpse of the sinking island of Tangier. The rain was pouring for the Final in Sassnitz and the wind, which had been up and down all day, started strong, but by the end of the race was under 5 knots. The Australian Bonds Flying Roos took a low course at the start, while the Canadian Northstar team pushed both the New Zealand Black Foils and the Spanish Los Gallos up towards the windward end of the line, resulting in all three being far slower off the line than the Roos. The Australian team took control, while the Canadians held off the Spanish and New Zealand teams on a murky racecourse. The tight boundaries, as with all the weekend’s races, gave few passing lanes, with most overtakes happening when one of the boats fell off the foils. With the 18 metre rigs, falling into a lull was disastrous, which the Bonds Flying Roos had found out to their cost in the first race of the day, but they weren’t going to make the same mistake again. Linking the gusts was key, as it is in light wind races in the International Moth class, which helm Tom Slingsby has proved so good in over the years. The crowds cheered on in their wet weather gear as Australia wrapped up their fifth event win of the season and now hold a massive 14-point lead in the championship. In this build episode, I prep the deck of the Little Auk for glassing and lay down a fill coat of epoxy, sanding and getting the surface ready for a clean, glass-clear finish. From there, I shift to the cockpit: building up the coaming from plywood laminations, then wrapping it in carbon fiber using my pre-preg method. Pre-pregging carbon lets me control resin content precisely instead of fighting for saturation on a curved, vertical surface, no drips, no dry spots, no excess weight from pooled epoxy. It's a different problem than wetting out glass on a flat deck, and this video walks through why the approach changes when the substrate does. Our 4-year-old Coral is taking her underwater adventures to a whole new level! 🤿🌊 We explore the incredible Réserve Cousteau in Guadeloupe, where the water is crystal clear, the reef is full of life, and Coral starts diving below the surface all on her own. Watching her confidence grow underwater at only four years old was pretty amazing! But our peaceful Caribbean adventure doesn't stay peaceful for long. The swell rolls in and our anchorage becomes so uncomfortable that we decide it's time to move. We head to nearby Anse à Sable, where we stumble across something we weren't expecting — a natural hot spring right beside the sea! ♨️🌴 It turns into the perfect place for the kids to play while we relax and enjoy a glass of wine. In questo test abbiamo provato la Maxima 800 Sport con **motore fuoribordo Honda V6 250 CV**, verificando dal vivo come si comporta in navigazione. Una barca open sportiva, carrellabile e progettata per offrire tanto spazio, con una portata fino a **12 persone**. Ma come naviga realmente? Scopriamolo nella nostra **prova in mare della Maxima 800 Sport**. ### Maxima 800 Sport: caratteristiche e dimensioni La **Maxima 800 Sport** ha una lunghezza fuori tutto di **8 metri** e una larghezza di **2,55 metri**. Dimensioni che la rendono carrellabile e quindi particolarmente interessante per chi desidera trasportare la propria barca e utilizzarla in località diverse durante le vacanze. La capacità dichiarata è di **12 persone** e gli spazi sono studiati per permettere agli ospiti di trovare comodamente posto a sedere anche durante la navigazione. A poppa troviamo un'ampia panca che può accogliere fino a quattro persone. A queste si aggiungono pilota e copilota e l'ampia zona di prua con **divano a ferro di cavallo**, sfruttabile per ospitare altre persone a bordo. ### Cucina, frigorifero e comfort a bordo Alle spalle della postazione di guida troviamo un mobile attrezzato che aumenta notevolmente la praticità della Maxima 800 Sport. La zona comprende **lavello, fornello e frigorifero**, offrendo tutto il necessario per trascorrere una giornata in mare e preparare qualcosa direttamente a bordo. Nonostante l'impostazione sportiva e open, quindi, questa barca offre diverse soluzioni dedicate al comfort e alla vita quotidiana in navigazione. ### Console di guida e strumentazione La **console della Maxima 800 Sport** combina un design elegante e sportivo con una strumentazione completa. Troviamo il comando elettronico del motore, l'elica di prua con relativo joystick e una configurazione con **due display**, che permette di visualizzare contemporaneamente navigazione, accessori e principali informazioni del motore, come giri, velocità e consumi. L'idroguida è montata di serie, mentre la seduta del pilota permette di governare la barca sia in piedi, utilizzando il poggiareni, sia comodamente seduti grazie a una configurazione ergonomica e avvolgente. Anche l'impianto stereo può essere gestito attraverso la strumentazione di bordo, mentre l'illuminazione LED contribuisce a creare una piacevole atmosfera. ### T-Top, prendisole e cabina Il grande **T-Top della Maxima 800 Sport** protegge la zona di comando e parte del pozzetto. Durante la nostra prova è stato particolarmente utile contro la pioggia, mentre in estate diventa fondamentale per ripararsi dal sole. Oltre alla sua funzione pratica, il T-Top contribuisce a rendere ancora più sportivo il design della barca. La configurazione open permette inoltre di muoversi comodamente da poppa a prua mantenendo il piano di calpestio sullo stesso livello, senza dover affrontare gradini. Nonostante questo, a bordo è presente anche una **cabina con letto matrimoniale**, una soluzione interessante per aumentare ulteriormente la versatilità della barca. ### Velocità di crociera e consumi Durante la prova abbiamo navigato a circa **22 nodi e 3.000 giri/min**, registrando un consumo indicato di circa **16,5 litri/ora**. We spent a day off the boat, and Gibraltar turned out to be one of the strangest places we've been. You get there on foot by walking across the airport runway — an actual working runway, with a pedestrian crossing painted on it. Then through a tunnel cut into 300-year-old fortifications, and out onto a British high street with a Starbucks on it, in Spain, in 30 degrees. Up on the Rock there are wild monkeys that have decided the railings belong to them. Everyone tells you not to touch them. One of them climbed onto my shoulder and made the decision for me. They are, for the record, extremely soft. Also up there: St Michael's Cave, which is a cavern full of stalactites with a concert auditorium built inside it and a light show in purple. Fifty-two kilometres of tunnels the British dug into the Rock by hand, with the cannons still in them. And a glass viewing platform hanging over a 340-metre drop, which produced the biggest "oh hell no" of the trip so far. Next week we head north up the Atlantic coast toward Lisbon. The Bay of Biscay was one of the BIG passages we knew we’d have to tackle on our journey into the Med… but there was one question we couldn’t stop thinking about: Do we take the kids? In this episode, we finally make it to Brest, stock Sea-Kat ready for the crossing, pull up the decking to check everything underneath and wait for the arrival of our extra crew member, Sam from @samsails9820 Then comes the difficult decision. With 3½ days at sea ahead of us, we decide that Lily and the girls will fly ahead while Joe, Skye and Sam take Sea-Kat across the Bay of Biscay. After all the worrying and weather watching, Biscay was surprisingly kind to us. We had good conditions, LOTS of sea time and Skye keeping everyone entertained with increasingly ridiculous games 😂 Three and a half days later, we’d done it. Finalmente chegou o momento que tanto esperávamos: a primeira saída do Rubinicco! ⛵️❤️ Depois de todo o trabalho, dos problemas, da reforma e de tantas horas colocando esse veleiro de volta em condições de navegar, finalmente tivemos a oportunidade de sair pela primeira vez com ele. A Marina está passando por obras e acabou nos obrigando a mudar de lugar para uma vaga que não era das melhores. Mesmo assim, decidimos aproveitar a oportunidade para fazer nosso primeiro teste na água. E foi exatamente isso: um TESTE. O Rubinicco ainda precisa de alguns ajustes no motor e, para completar, o casco está cheio de cracas, o que acabou prejudicando bastante o desempenho do barco. Então não esperem grandes velocidades neste primeiro passeio! Mas, sinceramente? Isso pouco importou. Ver o Rubinicco navegando novamente depois de tudo o que aconteceu foi uma sensação indescritível. Foi a primeira vez que saímos com o barco e também a primeira oportunidade de testar de verdade o motor depois de todo o trabalho. Apesar dos problemas e de tudo que ainda precisamos ajustar, a saída foi tranquila e serviu para mostrar que estamos no caminho certo. Fakarava är en av de platser vi drömt om att få uppleva och här får vi snorkla mitt bland mängder av hajar. 🦈🤿 Men när det är dags att lämna atollen blir det betydligt mindre paradis och betydligt mer… nervöst. Vi ska ut genom det södra passet, men vi har tajmat tidvattnet (slack) fel. Strömmen är stark och vi får kämpa för att ta oss ut. Samtidigt har vi land i lä och alldeles för grunt vatten på fel ställe. Att gå på grund här är verkligen inget vi vill vara med om. Så medan vi nyss låg och snorklade med hajar får vi plötsligt fullt fokus på tidvatten, ström, djup och att komma ut ur atollen utan att något går fel. Oh no, holes in the boat! It always makes us very nervous to cut holes into Isabella even if they are above the waterline. Yet, that's what it takes to install the Atwood 238 helm chair. A big ol’ 3-1/4” hole in the cockpit floor right over the engine. To add extra support, Steve made a backing board that we attached to the ceiling in the engine room under where the hole will be cut. Using lots of 3M™ 4200 Marine Adhesive Sealant he secured the base of the chair to the cockpit floor. Additionally six 3” 1/4-20 bolts help to keep the base in place. That sealant squeezed out around the base making a super nice and tight seal. No leaks over the engine! Helm chair installed, but wait...the seat is a little low. Karen sat on a variety of pillows to find just the right height. We’ve ordered an adjustable 19-1/2” to 23” pole that should solve the issue. Now when sailing we can sit, swivel, see out and enjoy the comfort of the new helm chair. Dolphins play nearby teasing us to join them while we continue working in the cockpit. Removed the Dri-Dek that covered the floor revealing a dirty cockpit. The existing drain is a bit too high and water has difficulty draining. Karen cleans around the drain while Steve sings (yes, that’s a warning). He then carefully removes the drain with a special tool...an old putty knife and installs a flush mounted drain. Hopefully the cockpit will drain more efficiently in the future. Karen used boat soap and brushed away the dirt on the Dri-Dek. We’ll store it for another use; perhaps in the sail lockers. We are on S/V Isabella a Super Mikado 56 manufactured in France by C.N.S.O. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. Dès les premières heures, le Lagoon 410 nous impressionne : au près, avec un ris dans la grand-voile et un ris dans le génois, nous maintenons une moyenne de 7,5 nœuds. Mais une traversée océanique commence rarement sans imprévu… La batterie du moteur tribord montre déjà des signes inquiétants. On teste sa charge, on évalue nos solutions de rechange et on surveille son état de près. Pendant ce temps, on reprend tranquillement notre rythme de navigation, on organise les réserves de nourriture et on se prépare mentalement pour les milliers de milles nautiques qui nous attendent.
