It’s a big milestone week aboard Chasing Serenity! We finally apply the new name decals to our Royal Cape 500 sailing catamaran — a moment we’ve been looking forward to since the start of our journey! But boat life isn’t all celebrations. We also face a major setback when we discover that our Fischer Panda generator is a total loss. In this episode, we discuss our plans for upgrading to a new generator and making future improvements to our battery and electrical system to better support our liveaboard lifestyle. In the spirit of preparedness, we also test an expired inflatable life raft to see how it performs after years of storage. And amidst the chaos, the kids get some time to relax and play at the park. ⚓ Join our family sailing vlog as we continue our journey toward a self-sufficient, ocean-ready catamaran. From milestones like naming our boat to major repair decisions and safety tests, this episode shows the real highs and lows of liveaboard catamaran life. 📍 Location: Wrightsville Beach, NC / U.S. East Coast / Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway 🔧 Topics: sailing family, catamaran name reveal, generator failure, electrical upgrades, battery system planning, life raft testing, Royal Cape 500

We get a lot of negative criticism about using lines under tension, but we as sailors we should be able to do it as part of our routine and we have the proper technique for everything. Here you can see how we manage the lines under tension on the winches. #sailing #linehandling #docking #greece
Marine navigation has undergone a significant change over the past 30 years with the advent of inexpensive, versatile electronics that can access and use sophisticated imagery and text information to even the smallest of boats. And the internet and satellite communications bring all of this to even the remotest of locations. But these modern gems are a double-edged sword that can cut through the darkest and foggiest of nights but also lull the mariner into a sense of false security. Advanced navigation prep remains an essential practice for the prudent mariner to avoid surprises during the cruise, and this requires route planning based on the charts, publications and notices prior to the cruise and use of these items in conjunction with the electronics during the cruise.

The storm is over, but the fallout has just begun. We survived the lightning strike. Now comes the hard part. Assessing the damage, one system at a time. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, still reeling from the lightning strike, we hang on anchor at Thomas Cay and start sorting through the damage. Then we move to Staniel Cay to check the keel, begin repairs, and start the long and costly process of getting replacement parts shipped in. ⚠️ Lightning Strike Update We were directly struck by lightning. Navigation systems, running lights, anchor lights, work lights, a large freezer, and even our keel were damaged. We're still facing VAT, duty, exchange rates, customs brokerage, and a costly haul-out for keel repairs in the Dominican Republic. Current items still needing repair/replacement include our Isotherm freezer in the saloon, our AIS and keel repairs. Also, our newly replaced wind instruments aren't working. Facing shipping and customs for replacement. Sailing through the far north of Norway, in this episode we take you from Hammerfest to Tromsø. We leave the world’s northernmost town, explore history of Finnmark’s WWII destruction, and crosse the notorious Lopphavet – one of Norway’s most dangerous sea areas. We document the 85-nautical-mile passage across Arctic waters, reflecting on the reconstruction of the region and the endurance of those who live here. With rugged coastlines, stunning landscapes, calm seas, and moments of solitude, this episode captures the essence of Arctic sailing: unpredictable, harsh, and deeply beautiful. ⏳ Timestamps: 00:00 Departure from Hammerfest & the WWII history of the Finnmark 08:09 Arrival in Hasvik, accompanied by dolphins 10:24 Hasvik to Tromsø 🎵 Music from Epidemic Sound: My Little Friend by Franz Gordon A Familiar Smile by Gavin Luke Fading Bloom by Lalo Brickman Suddenly the Leaves Fall by Ruiqui Zhao 🔗 Links: https://www.norwegiancruisingguide.com https://www.barentswatch.no/en https://www.yr.no/en 📺 Watch More… https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRvcLZL9-pokLoV22O1OP3p5eR32J-SDD 🚢 Subscribe & Hit the Bell 🔔 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAym9YS0z1-qYm-s47pNEfw?sub_confirmation=1 📍 Follow Our Journey: https://www.instagram.com/sailingpolaris https://www.facebook.com/sailingpolaris https://www.sailingpolaris.uk 🛥️ Ever dreamed of sailing the world? This was a unique boat with lots of work done to it! Thanks to Pat for showing me! Year: 2002 Tiara 25' Type: Express cruiser designed for day cruising, fishing, and overnight stays. Market Value: Original $70,000 (a marine survey would confirm). Location: Dana Point Harbor Length Overall (LOA): 25 feet (7.62 meters). Beam: 8.5 feet (2.59 meters). Hull Material: Fiberglass with a modified-V hull for stability and performance. Displacement: ~6,500-7,500 lbs (2,948-3,402 kg) dry weight, increased due to heavier Yanmar engines and potential structural reinforcements (e.g., transom and stringers). Engine: Type: Two Yanmar 500 HP diesel engines (likely Yanmar 6LY3-ETP or 6LY3-STP models, common 6-cylinder marine diesels producing 440-500 HP, or a custom 500 HP variant).MAG MPI (300 HP each). Exact engine details aren’t visible, but twin V8s are standard. Configuration: Likely twin sterndrives or inboard with outdrives, replacing the original MerCruiser setup. Yanmar often pairs with ZF or Twin Disc transmissions. Fuel Capacity: 200 gallons. Water Capacity: 20-30 gallons (76-114 liters). Holding Tank: ~20 gallons (76 liters). Cruising Speed: Estimated 35-45 knots (depending on load, propellers, and hull optimization), a significant increase from the original 25-30 knots. Top Speed: 35-45 knots Additional Features: Enclosure, updated electronics (Furuno Radar and other upgrades likely added during ownership), new upholstery, and potential modern amenities from 23 years of maintenance. Spacious Layout The Tiara 2500 Open offers a practical and comfortable layout for its size: Cabin: Forward V-berth sleeps 2-4 with a convertible dinette. Compact galley with sink, single-burner stove, and refrigerator. Enclosed head with marine toilet and sink. Cockpit: Spacious open deck with a helm station, L-shaped lounge seating (convertible to a sunpad), and a wet bar. Ideal for fishing or entertaining, with rod holders and a live well in some configurations. Capacity: Designed for 8-10 people comfortably, with a maximum capacity of 10-12 depending on U.S. Coast Guard certification and seating configuration. The 8.5-foot beam and open cockpit support this. Storage: Ample under-seat and cabin storage for gear, fishing tackle, or provisions. Benefits Versatile Performance: Twin V8 MerCruiser engines provide reliable power for cruising or fishing, with a range of 200-250 nautical miles. The modified-V hull handles choppy waters well. Spacious & Social: The 8.5-foot beam and open cockpit make it ideal for groups of 10, perfect for day trips, fishing excursions, or overnight stays. Long-Term Ownership Value: Owned for 23 years since 2002, the $70,000 price suggests significant upgrades (e.g., electronics, engines, or cosmetics) by a dedicated owner, offering a well-maintained vessel. Classic Design with Modern Touches: The 2002 Tiara styling, combined with 23 years of care, blends timeless appeal with updated functionality. Trailerable Option: At 25 feet, it’s towable with a suitable trailer (though rare due to weight), adding flexibility. Maintenance Tips Engine Service: Service the Yanmar diesels every 250-300 hours or annually (oil changes, fuel filters, impeller, zinc anodes) to ensure reliability, costing ~$1,000-$1,500 per service per engine. Hull Care: Inspect the fiberglass for gelcoat cracks or osmosis, and apply a barrier coat if needed, though 2002 models are less prone than older boats. Electronics: Check upgraded systems (e.g., Garmin) for software updates and wiring integrity. Upholstery & Enclosure: Clean and condition the enclosure and cushions to preserve their condition. Structural Check: Verify the stringers and transom for rot or delamination, though a well-maintained 2002 model should be in good shape. Why Choose the 2002 Tiara 25'? This 2002 Tiara 2500 Open, owned for 23 years, offers a blend of proven cruising performance and modern reliability due to long-term care. Its capacity for 10 people, twin V8 power, and spacious cockpit make it perfect for family outings, fishing trips, or coastal cruises. At $70,000, it represents a solid investment for a well-cared-for boat with a rich ownership history. A marine survey is recommended to confirm the condition and any upgrades, especially given its age and the 23-year ownership period. 👉 Like, Subscribe, and Hit the Bell for more boat tours, cruising tips, and reviews! I'm invited by Alpine ski legend Ivica Kostelić to deliver his new Figaro 3 race boat (Amelicor) 500 NM to Malta so that he may race it in the Rolex Middle Sea race. Ivica demonstrates some of his sailing techniques (developed over 5 years of racing Class 40s) and we review some of the features of this boat (foils, 3D sail trim, comfortless interior, etc.). For 60% of the passage we alternate between 9 and 15 kts SOG, before the wind collapses on us. Follow Ivica's sailing adventure on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube (all under his name).

In November 1913, the Great Lakes were hit by the most destructive storm in the region's history. Of the 19 ships lost to the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, often dubbed the White Hurricane, the largest was the brand new Canadian freighter James Carruthers, which vanished on Lake Huron on November 9th, 1913. This is Part 2 of the video I made with Steve the Camera and Ben the surveyor about how we all sometimes get tired of boats costing loads of money. They don’t have to, and for the person prepared to work hard and use initiative, it’s sometimes surprising what can be found lurking in the back of boatyards all over the western world. We just have to think outside the box. I suggest you watch Part 1 first. Part 2 was posted a couple of days ago but we had some tech issues, so this is a re-post. #boat, #sailing, #boating, #boatlife If you’re interested in sailing, things maritime and the salty road to freedom, you'll enjoy my channel, so pour yourself a glass of the finest and settle down with my personal mixture of yarns and useful instructional material. After a wonderful birthday week and some unforgettable diving, we sailed into the Marina at Tioman a small, charming island off the coast of Malaysia. Tioman is one of Malaysia’s best-kept secrets — a duty-free island known for incredible snorkeling, diving, and jungle trekking. Bad weather was predicted for the next few days, so we decided to seek shelter at the marina. Soon we realized the island’s cargo ferry — the lifeline for groceries and provisions would not be coming for the next week due the the storm predictions ! What followed was heavy rain, strong gusts, and one wild squall that even blew away our slippers! Once the weather cleared, we headed out to Renggis Island for a snorkeling adventure where we swam with blacktip sharks and a turtle. It was an unforgettable experience! We spent two blissful weeks at Tioman, soaking in its peace and beauty. Join us as we share this slice of island life — full of laughter, storms, and serenity. This week, we had to put the build on hold. It’s a serious test that comes with real risks — and the results could have a major impact on her future. Join us as we witness a moment of living history: the 50th anniversary celebration of the legendary Hōkūle‘a's arrival in Ra'iātea. But the celebration is cut short when a new and painful issue forces me to seek medical attention. NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US?
