Watch our worst undocking attempt ever. We’re supposed to be sailing to Winter Cove on Saturna Island. Living on a sailboat does not mean that sailing goes smoothly. Eventually, in this video, we do get away from Pender Island. But operating an old wooden sailboat has a way of turning a simple plan into something considerably less simple. Before we can get underway, there are jobs to finish aboard "W. Grebe", our vintage wooden gaff-rigged sailboat. There is always something that needs fixing, adjusting, checking, or figuring out — and this morning is no exception. We also introduce you into the continuing saga of "Bluey", our new 1981 Volkswagen Westfalia. Bluey, on her first day with us, reminded us that owning temperamental old machines is a lifestyle choice. And then Mary and I have to actually get the boat off the dock. We’ve lived aboard together long enough to know that leaving a dock can occasionally expose some… differences in communication style. This departure is one of those occasions. There’s no manufactured drama here. No pretending that living aboard and sailing together is endlessly romantic. Sometimes you’re tired. Sometimes somebody gives an instruction that makes perfect sense to them and absolutely no sense to the other person. Sometimes voices get a little sharper than intended. And then you get clear of the dock, hoist the sails, and remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place. Our destination is "Winter Cove on Saturna Island", in British Columbia’s Southern Gulf Islands. Winter Cove sits beside Boat Passage, the narrow stretch of water separating Saturna Island from Samuel Island and the Strait of Georgia beyond. It’s one of those places that reminds us how extraordinary this little corner of the Pacific Northwest really is — islands, tidal passages, old forests, rocky shorelines and anchorages that have been used by people travelling these waters for generations. This channel is increasingly about what happens when we give ourselves a reason to go somewhere. Not simply “we sailed to another anchorage,” but the projects, problems, weather, history, people, food and unexpected moments that happen along the way. Sometimes the interesting part of a voyage happens long before you reach the destination. This was one of those days. --- ABOUT W. GREBE W. Grebe is our classic wooden gaff-rigged sailing boat and our home. She was built on Denman Island, British Columbia, by Herbert Havelaar and is based on Harrison Butler’s Khamseen design. She carries a traditional gaff mainsail and topsail along with her headsails, and she is powered — when the wind refuses to cooperate — by an old Sabb diesel with a variable-pitch propeller. Living aboard an older wooden boat means sailing is only part of the story. Maintenance is constant. There are traditional systems to understand, wood to look after, rigging to inspect, mechanical problems to solve and an endless collection of small jobs that somehow become large jobs. After what feels like a zillion years of planning, researching, calculating, and generally overthinking everything, we’re ready to build an actual barn for our trimaran! In this episode, we bring in a telehandler to stand up the huge 64-foot walls, and immediately discover our columns don’t actually fit into their brackets the way they’re supposed to. 🤦🏻 After a quick fix, we’re back in business — and things actually go surprisingly smoothly. By the end of the day, three walls are standing, and for the first time, we can really start to see (and feel) what this barn is going to be. It’s pretty fricken rad. Then we discovered something unexpected: some of the most exciting encounters were waiting right along the rocky shore. Free-diving in the shallower water, we began spotting life we never expected to find so close to land. Fish appeared among the volcanic rocks, and then, suddenly, a curious sea turtle came into view. But the surprises didn’t stop there. Just when we thought the dive couldn’t get any better, we spotted a stingray gliding far below us… and then came one of the strangest encounters of the dive: a mimic octopus that suddenly dashed away, spraying a cloud of black ink! What started as a search for the best diving offshore turned into an unforgettable exploration of the underwater world right beside the island. Salut les loulous ⛵ Aujourd’hui, j’ai eu le plaisir d’être invité à sortir en mer par Aymeric, un abonné de la chaîne, à bord de son Sun Odyssey 24.2. Nous quittons le port de La Rochelle sous un beau soleil, avec l’envie de profiter pleinement de cette après-midi en mer. Cap sur le large et le Pertuis pour une belle navigation à la voile. Le vent est malheureusement assez faible en début de sortie. Pour essayer de gagner un peu de vitesse et profiter au maximum des conditions, nous décidons d’envoyer le spi asymétrique. Le bateau glisse tranquillement sur l’eau, dans une ambiance particulièrement agréable. Puis, en fin de journée, quelques thermiques viennent se lever et nous permettent de retrouver un peu plus de vitesse. Une belle occasion de savourer pleinement les sensations de la navigation à la voile. Alors que la journée touche à sa fin, nous mettons le cap sur La Rochelle pour rejoindre le port. Une dernière navigation paisible avant de terminer cette magnifique sortie. Une très belle après-midi en mer, du soleil, un peu de vent, un joli bateau et surtout le plaisir de partager un bon moment sur l’eau. She's got plenty of different useable spaces to accomodate groups and depending on how you feel you can head forward for some sun or retire back aft for a drink in the shade and a chit chat with your mates. But... load this boat up with your gear and in a short amount of time you can easily change the mission profile from weekend fun departing from your home dock, to doing the entire Great Loop and having the adventure of a lifetime. Then at the end of all that fun you're still sitting on a globally known brand name that will make it easier for you to sell the asset when you've decided to move onto the next adventure. It's big enough to accomodate everyone yet small enough to manage without too much stress and well known enough to move no matter what the brokerage market is doing at the time. Veleiros foram parar na praia, outros afundaram na própria poita, e algumas pessoas perderam a casa e o sustento ao mesmo tempo — porque a casa e o sustento eram o barco. Um pescador morreu em São Sebastião, e outras pessoas morreram no mar, no Rio de Janeiro. O vento não foi o mais forte já medido ali. Em 2019 a defesa civil registrou 123 km/h nesse mesmo canal. Ainda assim, quem viu os dois diz que este foi pior — e o motivo tem menos a ver com a força do vento do que com o que entrou junto com ele. Nesta conversa, o Gabriel conta o que fez quando soube que o Touché tinha soltado: correu pelo píer, saiu num bote em plena rajada, pulou no mar e nadou até o próprio veleiro encalhado na areia. E conta o que veio depois, que é a parte que ninguém filma — a água subindo por dentro, a aposta de ligar o motor com as baterias submersas, o diagnóstico da quilha, a gaze de primeiros socorros virando calafetagem, a cinta de carga abraçando o casco para o lastro não cair, e a agenda inteira de trabalho perdida. Wir verlassen Christiansø und nehmen Kurs auf unser nächstes Ziel: Schweden. Vor uns liegt die Überfahrt nach Ystad, einer der bekanntesten Hafenstädte an der schwedischen Südküste. Auf offener Ostsee ändern sich Wind und Wellen immer wieder und jede Seemeile bringt uns unserem nächsten Etappenziel näher. Nach Stunden auf See taucht schließlich die schwedische Küste am Horizont auf. Wenig später laufen wir in den Hafen von Ystad ein und erkunden die historische Altstadt mit ihren kleinen Gassen, dem Kopfsteinpflaster und dem typisch skandinavischen Flair. Ystad empfängt uns mit seiner besonderen Atmosphäre und markiert den nördlichsten Punkt unseres gesamten Ostsee-Törns. Wir sind Rika und Johannes aus Hamburg. Zusammen mit Rikas Schwester Julia segeln wir mit unserer Maxi 84 nach und nach durch die Dänische Südsee, um unsere Segel-Skills zu erweitern und das tolle Wassersport-Revier zu erkunden. Von den vielen kleinen Inseln und dem teilweise klaren Wasser sind wir immer wieder fasziniert. Die Ostsee-Törns sind definitiv unsere Highlights. Normalerweise trefft ihr uns jedoch auf unserem Heimatrevier direkt vor unserer Haustür an: Der Außenalster in Hamburg. Denn, wir haben uns im April 2021 einen Kielzugvogel gekauft. Mit dem Holzboot ist auch unsere Segel-Leidenschaft gestartet. Zwischen April und Oktober genießen wir also das Segeln auf der Knysna [ˈnaɪzna] (so haben wir unseren Kielzugvogel getauft, nach einer Stadt in Südafrika benannt). . Im Herbst 2023 haben wir uns einen weitern Traum erfüllt und uns eine Maxi 84 gekauft. Diese wurde von uns Ende Oktober 2023 nach Kiel überführt. Seit dem widmen wir uns im Winterlager auch diesem schwedischen Segelklassiker, im Sommer erkunden wir die Dänische Südsee. Dabei haben wir uns immer nach dem Motto gerichtet: Learning by Doing Auf diesem Kanal möchten wir Euch zeigen, wie wir stetig dazulernen, Fortschritte machen aber auch manchmal an unsere Grenzen stoßen. Getreu dem Motto: Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen. Our insurers require a survey before we can launch after our "change everything" 7 year refit. So many things to finish.
