Follow our quick guide on how to do a stress-free Stern To or Mediterranean Mooring Many fine yachties come on holiday with us each year ready to embark on a cracking flotilla or bareboat holiday in one of our Mediterranean destinations but, having done most of their sailing in the tidal waters around the UK, the Stern To or Mediterranean style mooring worries them. Basically, because of the lack of tide, town quays and marinas around the med can fit boats more effectively by mooring them with the stern facing the quay. This also makes access to the stern of the boat easy using a plank or passerelle and creates a sociable quayside atmosphere. The manoeuvre itself is relatively simple but like all of those in sailing requires a certain amount of preparation and planning to ensure a smooth and stress-free mooring. The guide below is for a lighter wind Stern To mooring as is common in sheltered harbours but keep an eye out for more “How To’s” including doing this in a heavy wind. Preparation Having a plan and being prepared is very important in any sailing manoeuvre and this is no exception. Before you start the approach you need to do the following tasks Put Fenders out on both sides of the yacht Drop the anchor slightly out of the bow roller Secure both stern lines to the cleats Planning your entry to the harbour is very important, make sure you know where the wind is coming from, are there any hazards like moored boats or swimmers. Also, make sure all crew know what they’re doing, you will need one person operating the windlass on the bow and if possible someone to help with stern lines in the cockpit. Communication is as always very important to make sure the skipper can communicate clearly with the crewmember on the windlass. Approach The first thing to look for is a suitably sized space for your yacht on the quay, don’t try to fit into a space that’s far too small and you won’t be very popular if you fill a space that could fit two boats. Head into the harbour and approach the space in reverse dropping the anchor as far away from the key as possible (at least 4 boat lengths) in line with the neighbouring chains. Reverse slowly towards the space turning the stern of the boat towards the wind and make sure you balance the speed of the boat with the force on the windlass. When the boat is a third of a boat’s length from the quay stop dropping the anchor and make sure crew at the stern are ready. As you stop the anchor, your engine should be in neutral, with a small touch of forward to bring the yacht to a stop. If no one is on the quay to catch your lines, then this should be at a suitable distance for a crew member to step ashore with the windward mooring line. Securing the Stern Lines When you are close to the quay the crew takes the windward stern line ashore and passes it through a ring or similar at roughly 45 degrees to the boat before passing it back to someone in the cockpit. This is then secured and sweated if necessary to get the boat in the correct position (see the video for more details). When the windward line is secured do the same for the leeward line making sure the yacht is the correct distance from the key. During this process, the skipper may need to motor forward or backwards slowly. Finalising the Manoeuvre To finalise the manoeuvre you need to tighten up the anchor chain with the windless till it’s at 45 degrees which will set the boat in its final position. If you’re leaving the boat for any time snub a line onto the anchor cable and around a cleat on the foredeck to take force off the windless. When you’re happy your ship is secure sit back and enjoy your favourite post sailing tipple. Hopefully, this guide and video will help you to understand the Stern To mooring process and take the worry out of the end of day manoeuvre. This week we continue the work on the stringer replacements in the galley. If you recall from last week, we found that the stringers underneath the galley seating had rotted through. (See last weeks video here - https://youtu.be/pGoYLcjt1WE) It was not all of the beams or even the length of them but was specifically where the beams went below the forward edge of the galley seat. Last week we identified the issue, removed the rotted stringers and devised and designed a plan for resolving the problem. This week we test several wooden joint options and install the new stringers in the boat. This video will show how to plan, cut and install the new stringers. We go over how to shape the wood for the best fiberglass adherence and how to prepare the surface the install the new beams, supports and fiberglassing them into the existing part of the hull. I discovered some oil was dripping from under the engine and located the leak to be behind the raw water pump. Between the pump and the engine there is a O-ring which should be easy to change. I thought.... Someting I have realised is the pumps is differently designed from model to model. They are differently designed and differently mounted on the engine. My pump was new and mounted by a mechanic when I bought the boat in 2016 but it was never painted. My plan is to paint the pump Volvo green and mount a new O-ring so the pump can run for many years. Die Wellen wurden ab Kiel Leichtturm höher...schätzungsweise 1m Beim Stoller Grund ließen wir Blumen ins Wasser für den Voreigner des Seeteufel‘s, der vor kurzem aus dem Leben schied und für Kim’s Opa, der vor 24Jahren starb. Ein berührender Moment für alle... In Schleimünde angekommen, war die ganz leichte Seekrankheit bei Jessi und Steffi auch schon wieder vergessen. Es wurde gemeinsam ein leckeres Pilz-Risotto gekocht und die Einsamkeit im Hafen genossen. Es waren nur 2 weitere Boote dort. Herrlich ❤️

NIGHT SQUALL!!!!! On day 9 of a 1,400 mile passage we get hit in the middle of the night by a massive squall! The wind is hitting a solid 45 knots and the rain is driven so hard it’s blinding us. We accidentally jibe, take a wave in the salon hatch, and it takes all hands on Deck to get Delos under control and properly reefed as we cruise down the waves making over 14 knots. That pretty much sums up life in the ITC ZED…. The next day we sight land and sail Delos into the jungle rivers of French Guyana. We’re struck by the quiet and calmness the jungle river provides us after so many days rocking and rolling on the ocean. Time to explore French Guyana! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We try and shop at local farmers markets where we can, but here in the Bahamas agricultural production mainly focuses on Poultry, winter vegetables, and citrus fruits. It's a little harder to find a broccoli or zucchini in these areas unless it's imported. But there are enough fish, coconuts, bananas and mangos to satisfy your taste buds for years! With a massive Indian influence in the major cities to Kava drinking locals in the outer islands. It is an experience that we will never forget. In this adventure we entertain ourselves in the big city of Suva then set sail to Kandavu known for it’s incredible diving on astrolobe reef and Kava. The diving was indeed spectacular. From Manta Rays to Dog Tooth Tuna. Kandavu has it all including Kava! As we sail around the world we always do research before setting arriving in a new place. We google. We read blogs of other cruisers. This time we came across the logs of the sailing vessel Delos (the first pioneers of sailing youtube channels). Sure enough, they came to Kandavu and sailed right into Kavala Bay. It's no coincidence that the word 'Kava' is inside 'Kavala Bay'. As soon as we stepped foot on land we were invited that night to a Kava ceremony. Kava is a big deal in Fiji as well as well as many other nations in the South Pacific especially Vanuatu. Kava is a muddy drink made by grinding up Kava root. It's a sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant. Basically it's effects are much like alcohol but perhaps not as strong. Finally after much shenanigans in Kandavu, we were off to the Yasawas, the sunny side of Fiji where the beautiful beaches, sunsets and scenery did not disappoint! In order to step on land outside the settlements of Svalbard, we are obliges to be carrying a rifle for Polar Bear protection. So if we want to be able to rent a rifle, we will first have to prove we are able to safely handle a fire arm.
