An early morning up and going before sunrise ends long before sunset. We reflect on the decision of whether to get off the dock. Sometimes it is a much better idea to not leave than to take a chance.

I'm back in familiar New England waters. Following a provisioning run, I set off for a short sail from Vineyard Haven to Tarpaulin Cove. The sailing weather is near perfect, although there are thunderstorms in the forecast. Well those thunderstorms arrive sooner than expected in the form of a gust front that ushers in gale conditions lasting nearly one hour. Caught off guard I am scrambling, especially as the lovely Martha's Vineyard has suddenly become a dangerous lee shore. We make an early escape from the Giens Peninsula to stay ahead of strong winds forecast for later in the day. The headland near Toulon is notorious for accelerating the breeze, and once in open water, the waves can quickly build—so timing is everything. With a smooth passage behind us, we drop anchor off Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and wait for the wind to turn before crossing the bay to La Ciotat. This charming French town welcomes us with a large harbour, winding old streets, and plenty of cafés, restaurants, and small shops to explore. La Ciotat is a stop well worth making as we look for our next weather window to continue west along the Mediterranean coast. Jean’s had lots of boat adventures over the last 20 years. She, her husband and daughter spend two weeks every summer on their beloved Sharpie in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. She’s also sailed in Baja, the Bahamas, and the Philippines, mostly on small boats held together with hope and duct tape. Jean has worked as a marina manager and lived on a variety of boats, including a 90-foot converted fishing tender (shag carpet and all), a 60-foot sailboat and a tiny 160 square foot houseboat. Jean and her husband were married on their little tugboat back in 2006. For her next adventure, Jean is planning to solo the WA360 in a small sailing and rowing boat, just to see if she can do it. Over the past two years at CDK Technologies on the West coast of France, the most advanced offshore sailing yacht ever built has been taking shape. At 32 metres long, 22 metres wide, 38 metres high, and with 50,000 hours of design & study, 200,000 man hours of construction by the 200 people involved in the project, the new Maxi Edmond de Rothschild trimaran will be capable of pushing the 24 hour record, which currently stands at 907.7 nautical miles, to over a thousand nautical miles, which would be averaging close to 42 knots. Named Gitana 18, this Ultim trimaran is a radical departure from the existing generation of offshore leviathans, utilising adaptations of technologies we’ve seen in the smaller America’s Cup, SailGP, and even the International Moth designs, and scaling them for use in the world of offshore trimarans. No expense has been spared, and all the knowledge and experience of the Gitana and Team Verdier design offices, combined with C3 Technologies for the rudders, Re Fraschini making the foils, Southern Spars building the mast and boom, Harken deck hardware and North Sails, have come together to make this extraordinary yacht. Speed gains of 10 to 15 percent are expected, and skipper Charles Caudrelier is aiming for perfect flight in up to 3 metres waves. On every front Gitana 18 will take offshore sailing to another level. Under the waterline of the central hull is a T-foil centreboard, nearly 5 metres deep with a foil span of 3 metres, with the first of three U shaped rudders at the back, with the central rudder on a hinge to lift it out of the water. The port and starboard hulls also have this unique U-shaped rudder, each with a height of 4 metres and foil span of 2 metres, all equipped with trim tabs for steering and ride height control. The port and starboard rudders lift vertically. The port and starboard hull’s Y foils look very much like those on the America’s Cup AC75 monohulls, but pivot from the inboard side of hull, having a span of over 10 metres and foils nearly two and a half metres wide. Moving to the rig, the mast has spreaders which can be raked back whilst sailing to modify the power of the mainsail – a first at this scale. After the boat project is finished, we attend the Protestant church, then the real cultural excitement begins. First, we attend our favorite village's spectacular Heiva dance evening, followed by an incredible, bonus dance event! A visiting cultural group from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) shows up, and despite the pouring rain, their performance teaches us all about the fascinating differences between their ancient style of dance and the high-energy Polynesian rhythms of Bora Bora.
