From catastrophic mast failure on Thursday 13th June to back on the water, looking as good as new, on Monday 17th June. Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s shore team pulled together and delivered a most remarkable turn-around to recover and keep the whole programme on track. An heroic effort for sure by so many, what was proven was the team’s resilience and depth of talent – hallmarks of their campaign to date - and a very welcome sight out on the Barcelona waterfront. And the past month that we’ve spent sailing the South West coast of Turkey has been even more eventful than usual. Storms, beautiful anchorages, ancient ruins, and my difficult yet noble journey of becoming an amateur adventurer archeologist… But this week we experience way more excitement than normal. But excitement can be both good and bad, and when our daughter gets really sick we find ourselves looking for a pediatrician who speaks english in a rural part of Turkey. We just have to remember that we can only buy what we can carry and transport via dinghy. Alinghi Red Bull Racing suffered a catastrophic failure of their mast today in Barcelona just after 2pm with the afternoon sea-breeze well and truly in, with what the locals call a ‘strong Garbi’ from 210-220 degrees atop a 0.5-0.8 metres, three-second period swell from 230 degrees. It was a bear-away at top pace, with mast bend evident before the forestay went slack as the lower section in the bottom third of the mast gave way under pressure forward, causing the rig to collapse into the water to leeward. It was busier than the Ramblas on market day out on the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup racecourse with all five teams fighting for prime positions and eager to spy the performance profile of each other – regardless of what they may say in interview afterwards. And it was a perfect spying day with a huge variety of breeze through the afternoon, starting at an un-sailable 5 knots and peaking at 19 knots by the close of play.
