LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT 🔔 Watch next: ▶️ The Four Design Flaws That May Sink Your Boat - https://youtu.be/1Pts63seZYY Most people shopping for a catamaran never ask the dangerous questions. They compare layouts, finishes, and brochure numbers. But after losing our own boat, we stopped trusting marketing — and started pulling designs apart. In our last episode, we revealed 50+ features that make the Portofino 52 aluminium catamaran radically different from most production boats. It sparked a huge debate. So in this episode, we answer the questions everyone actually wants answered: • How much does the Portofino 52 really cost? • What’s included — and what’s optional? • What will it truly weigh when ready to cruise? • How fast will it sail in the real world? • Are these safety systems worth it — or just expensive complexity? We dive deep into real-world cruising performance, weight management, boom furling, lithium battery fire safety, system complexity, and why aluminium construction fundamentally changes offshore safety and comfort. This is not a sponsored review. We receive no commissions, no kickbacks, and no incentives of any kind. With 50+ years of combined sailing experience and 60,000+ offshore miles, we explain why displacement matters more than draft, what “comfortable speed” really means at sea, and why abandoning ship should never be the default plan. We also compare the Portofino 52 on price and design philosophy against other serious expedition catamarans including Garcia, McConaghy, and Kinetic, and explain why many production boats still carry design risks that matter if you’re crossing oceans. There are still unknowns — and we’re honest about them. We’ll share final sailing weight, performance numbers, and long-term reliability as this boat hits the water. If you’re planning serious cruising, offshore passages, or choosing your next catamaran — this conversation matters. Kick off your shoes and come barefoot with us. ⸻ 💬 Join the discussion: How do you balance performance, safety, and complexity on a cruising catamaran? 👣 About Us We’re the Barefoot Doctors — medical doctors and lifelong sailors living full-time aboard a performance expedition catamaran. Life really is better barefoot. If you love sailing, catamarans, yacht design, boat safety, offshore cruising, and behind-the-scenes boatbuilding, make sure to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell — because the Portofino 52 launch is coming, and you won’t want to miss what happens next. At Balance Catamarans, quality isn’t a marketing slogan — it’s a process that runs through every layer of the boat, from structure and engineering to silence underway and long-term owner support. In this in-depth conversation, Phil Berman (Founder) and Dean Paarman (Director of Operations – South Africa) break down what building for quality actually means in practice — and why it matters when your boat becomes your home, your transport, and your safety system at sea. This video goes inside the invisible details that define a Balance Catamaran: • Carbon foam-core bulkheads • Fully glassed deck joints (inside and out) • Hand-faired interiors with no cosmetic covers • Rigidity, silence, and long-term durability • Electrical systems built around modern 48V architecture • Quality control loops from factory to waterfront • Training, documentation, and real-world owner support You’ll also hear why stiffness equals silence, how quality directly impacts safety offshore, and why Balance chooses to build fewer boats — better — rather than chase volume. This is not about perfection. It’s about pride, process, and constantly raising the bar. 00:00 Introduction to Balance Catamarans 00:25 Passion, Heritage & the Balance Philosophy 01:26 Structural Quality: Bulkheads, Carbon & Rigidity 04:46 Craftsmanship, Fairing & Invisible Details 06:41 Training, Apprenticeships & Skilled Teams 07:31 Engineering, Weight, Strength & Innovation 14:10 Owner Experience, Silence & Offshore Comfort 17:48 Electrical Systems & 48V Technology Evolution 22:08 Sailing Skills, Training & Owner Confidence 22:47 Owner Community, Feedback & Continuous Improvement 24:48 Conclusion: Striking the Balance

This week we built the first wall of our home — but it’s going in right up against a steep bank, and that adds a layer of risk we can’t ignore. The site isn’t ideal but this structure is going to do a lot for us over the next few years, and that forced us into a compromise we’ve thought long and hard about. Working with a foundation crew, I learned how to lay block and we committed to a decision that becomes permanent the moment concrete goes in. Once this wall is filled, there’s no undo — so we need to get this right. Huge thanks to the crews who helped make this happen — links to everyone involved below. We are still in beautiful South Huahine and in this episode we focus on tackling some boat projects. One goes very wrong, requiring new skills we don’t have and we unknowingly complicate the situation rendering our SB engine useless. Thankfully the next project goes well saving us a lot of money. As a reward, we go to shore and explore the island of Huahine Iti by bike meeting fascinating locals, learning of a sailing horror story and getting to meet a vanilla farmer with the best vanilla in the world title bestowed upon him. #sailing #boatinglife #boatprojects #sailingadventure #islandlife #Huahine #frenchpolynesia #boatrepair #vanillafarm #travelvlog #sailingfail #adventuretime #islandexploration #paradise #travelingtheworld #yachtlife #cruisinglife #boatlife #tropicalparadise #sailingvlog #vanillabeans NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. The Art of Maintaining Teak Trim on a Sailboat: https://www.practical-sailor.com/subscriber-only/the-art-of-maintaining-teak-trim-on-a-sailboat Most sailboat owners assume their bilge pump is a reliable last line of defense. It’s installed, it runs when tested, and it’s easy to believe it will work when water is coming in. Unfortunately, real-world bilge pump failures are far more common than most owners realize. In this video, we take a close, practical look at why bilge pumps fail at the worst possible moment. From misleading pump capacity ratings and voltage drop to float switch failures, wiring corrosion, poor hose routing, and maintenance issues that quietly reduce performance, this is the information every boat owner should understand before an emergency happens. We also explain why simply installing a bigger bilge pump doesn’t always make a boat safer, how discharge plumbing and check valves can dramatically reduce flow, and why redundancy and proper installation matter more than advertised gallons-per-hour ratings. Whether you sail coastal waters or offshore, understanding how your bilge pump system really works can buy you valuable time when it matters most. If you own a sailboat, are refitting an older boat, or are planning upgrades to improve onboard safety, this video will help you make smarter decisions about bilge pumps, wiring, switches, and maintenance. bilge pump failure sailboat bilge pump boat safety systems bilge pump wiring float switch failure marine electrical systems boat maintenance sailboat maintenance bilge pump capacity boat flooding prevention offshore sailing safety bilge pump installation boat refit tips marine corrosion practical sailor Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I picked up earlier this year. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. This video shows the upgrading of my moth boom. I remove the internal Cunningham system, removing old mainsheet and boom vang rigging. Bunch of carbon laminate work and putting it all back together in time to go sailing. Enjoy!

Why are catamaran prices in Florida suddenly crashing? For years, the catamaran market was untouchable—sky-high prices and zero inventory. But now, the tide has turned. Listings are sitting longer, price cuts are happening daily, and well-known cruising cats are selling for significantly less than they were just two years ago. In this video, we investigate the 5 Massive Factors causing the Florida catamaran market to cool down in 2026: The Charter Dump: Why the influx of ex-charter fleets from the Caribbean is flooding the market. The Insurance Crisis: How hidden hurricane damage and skyrocketing premiums are forcing owners to sell. The Cost of Ownership: The reality of rising marina fees and haul-out rates for wide-beam vessels. Changing Trends: Why buyers are shifting toward performance cats and monohulls. The Pandemic Hangover: The wave of "dreamers" who are finally waking up to the hard work of cruising. Is this the perfect time to buy a catamaran, or are you catching a falling knife? Watch this before you make an offer. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Catamaran Market Shift 01:16 1. Too Many Charter Cats Flooding the Market 03:15 2. Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) grew out of military need to quickly identify friend from foe, but in the marine world, they have quickly become an indispensable tool for figuring out who is going where, when "that boat" will cross our path and even a method for regulatory agencies to provide us with navigational information in near real time. With the blending of AIS and the Internet, you can determine the name, registry and destination of vessels up and down the coastlines. Join Captains Tom Tursi and Frank Mummert, as they welcome Captain Ali Soylu, instructor for Maryland School of Sailing, in a discussion of what AIS can do for us and where we should be wary.

We’re mid-passage sailing south down Australia’s east coast as cyclone season approaches, making the most of the northerly winds while navigating busy coastal waters. This passage quickly proves why offshore sailing always demands vigilance, experience, and constant double-checking. What begins as a routine offshore passage soon delivers unexpected challenges, reinforcing the importance of situational awareness, visual navigation, and never relying on charts alone. As we sail through one of the largest shipping anchorages on the east coast, weaving between anchored commercial vessels, we share the real-world decisions and lessons that come with full-time cruising. From uncharted rocks and cross-checking visual references to managing traffic in high-use waters, this episode captures the reality of offshore sailing — unscripted, dynamic, and always changing. Join us as we continue our journey south and share what life is truly like living and sailing full-time as a family aboard our boat. - The Jameses xx ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ❤️ Support the Channel on Patreon Want to help keep these videos coming? Living aboard a sailboat means every upgrade turns into a full-on boat project — and in this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we’re taking on a major solar and battery upgrade while docked in the marina. As we prepare our sailboat for long-term cruising and sailing around the world, reliable power on board is essential, and that means tearing into the boat and dealing with the chaos that comes with it. To install our new solar power system and battery bank, we had to completely clear out the cabin, turning our floating home into a construction zone. This is real boat life — messy, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. If you’re a sailboat owner, beginner sailor, or dreaming of travelling the world by sailboat, this episode gives an honest look at what it takes to upgrade and maintain a cruising sailboat while living aboard full-time. While we’re stuck in the marina, we make the most of it by knocking over a long list of liveaboard boat jobs. From maintenance tasks to small repairs, these marina days are all about preparing our sailboat for future offshore sailing and extended cruising. This is the behind-the-scenes side of liveaboard sailing around the world that doesn’t always make it into the highlight reels. Of course, life aboard isn’t all work. When the tools get packed away, we escape the marina and head to the beach for a refreshing swim — a reminder of why we chose this lifestyle in the first place. It’s all about balance: hard work on the boat, freedom on the water, and enjoying the simple moments in between. If you’re interested in sailing, boats, off-grid solar systems, sailboat upgrades, or the realities of living on a sailboat, this episode is for you. Follow along as we share the highs, the mess, and the lessons learned while preparing our home to sail further, stay longer, and live more independently at sea. It's been two years since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been two years since our first sail ever. That's right two years ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sails up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We are Gav and Shezz an Aussie couple with a dream to sail and scuba dive around the world. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. With the final day still to come, everything remains open in ILCA 7, while in ILCA 6 the lead continues to be firmly held by Italy’s Ginevra Caracciolo.

This project has been a long time coming! In this episode, we finally finish and install the custom carbon fiber table for the roof of our sailing catamaran, starting from a bare foam core and ending with a professional level finish.... we hope! 😅 A full-blown composite build, we cut and shape the foam core, epoxy everything together, fiberglass the entire structure, then move on to the stages of filling, fairing, sanding, and sanding again. Once we were happy with the shape, it was time for gel coat, followed by more finishing work to get it looking just right. To take it from “good DIY” to something that looks pretty pro,, Nino steps in to work his magic and bring the final finish together. The result is a table that not only looks the part but is strong, lightweight, and perfectly suited to life on a boat. This video is a full behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to tackle a carbon fiber-style project on a liveaboard sailboat, the positive attitude, the learning curve, and the moment it’s finally bolted into place.
