We explore Sint Maarten starting on the Dutch side — from planes screaming overhead at Maho Beach to cruising the surprisingly affordable liveaboard scene on Simpson Bay Lagoon. Living aboard here can be way cheaper than you might expect, and the vibe is lively, social, and easygoing. Then we clear out and sail around to the French side of the island… and the mood changes fast. Marigot Bay still shows heavy scars from Hurricane Irma in 2017 — with derelict boats, visible damage, and a much quieter feel overall. After dropping anchor, we quickly realize this isn’t where we want to stay — so we pull it back up and sail over to Grand Case, where the atmosphere, food, and anchorage are way more our speed. Same island. Two totally different worlds. This channel is funded by viewers like you. After multiple requests we finally compare the two Nordhavn's we have lived on full time. The results may surprise you, or not. We have lived on these boats, travelled on these boats, crossed oceans on one and come down the US West coast on the other. We know what the sales people say, we know the experts can comment on the equipment and perfection BUT we have lived it. We know what works and what doesn't.

Living on a boat in Europe doesn’t have to mean mega yachts, millionaire budgets, or hardcore sailing skills. In this video, we completely flip the script and show you how you can live aboard a canal boat in Europe for around $50,000, with camping-level living costs, no tides, no waves, and skills you can learn in a single day. This is one of the most underrated cruising lifestyles on the planet — and almost nobody is talking about it. We’re diving deep into what long-term canal boat living is really like: 🚤 Buying a fully equipped liveaboard canal boat for ~$50k 💰 Running costs that are cheaper than rent 🛶 Free mooring (yes, really — even in places like Paris) 📉 Annual canal licenses that cost less than a weekend marina stay 🧠 Minimal skills required (no sailing experience needed) 🍷 Wine at lunchtime, medieval villages, and fresh bread every day Canal cruising isn’t about rushing — it’s about slowing down. Picture cruising through vineyards, tying up right in the center of town, walking to the local boulangerie, and accidentally docking in the middle of a village festival… again and again. We also cover: • How far you can travel on Europe’s interconnected canal system • Living aboard year-round (including winters) • The canal community & lock keepers (éclusiers) • Why this lifestyle is perfect for beginners • Why canal boats are cheaper to maintain than seagoing yachts • The real costs of fuel, food, marinas, and licenses • Why chartering a canal boat first is a smart move From the English Channel to the Mediterranean — and all the way through central Europe — this lifestyle lets you live inside the countries you travel through, not just pass by them. If you’ve ever said: “I can’t afford cruising.” “I don’t have the skills.” “Maybe one day…” This video might just destroy every one of those excuses. Kick off your shoes, slow down, and come barefoot with us. This lifestyle shouldn’t be this cheap and easy… but it is. 👉 Subscribe for the full canal cruising series 👍 Like & comment if this surprised you 📤 Share with that friend who thinks cruising is only for the rich 👣 About Us We’re the Barefoot Doctors — medical doctors and lifelong sailors living full-time aboard a performance expedition catamaran. After seven weeks on our mooring in Huahine, we finally dropped the lines and headed to town to stage for our overnight passage to Moorea. The problem? We didn’t have a great weather window—but we booked a humpback whale swimming tour, and we really don’t want to miss it. For the next 24 hours, we watched the forecasts closely, debating whether we should go. The window looked possible, but definitely not ideal. The next morning, with the boat fully prepped for offshore sailing, we went out to assess the conditions for ourselves. To our surprise, the weather was far better than expected. So, we keep going. Through the night we made steady progress, and in the early morning we arrived in Moorea—tired, relieved, and excited. Our reward? A reunion with our dear friends, Ian and Tara on SV Isla. #sailing #sailinglife #frenchpolynesia #huahine #moorea #sailboatlife #liveaboard #cruisinglife #oceanpassage #sailingadventure #sailingcouple #sailingvlog #sailaroundtheworld #bluewaterlife #offshoresailing #weatherwindow #sailingdecision #whalewatching #humpbackwhales #southpacific NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. We wrapped the first floor, set the floor trusses, and suddenly most of the work was happening without solid ground under our feet. I didn’t realize how exposed framing feels before the flooring goes down—carrying lumber, moving tools, and trying to keep up while working over open gaps. The crew is completely at home up there. I’m… learning. This week was about adjusting to a new level of intensity, trusting the process, and getting more comfortable doing things that felt sketchy at first—because that’s what building this place is going to require. A Sailor’s Guide to Marine Insurance: https://www.practical-sailor.com/uncategorized/a-sailors-guide-to-marine-insurance Are older sailboats really uninsurable? If you’ve been shopping for a 20, 30, or even 40-year-old sailboat, you’ve probably seen the warnings online: “Insurance won’t touch it.” But is that actually true? In this video, we break down the real rules behind insuring older sailboats in the United States and Canada. We look at what insurance companies actually care about, why boat age alone is rarely the deciding factor, and how thousands of owners are still insuring older cruising sailboats every year. You’ll learn: Can you insure a sailboat over 25 or 30 years old? In the last episode, you saw how we officially checked into the Anambas Islands, Indonesia — a smooth and simple process thanks to Isky, our local agent, who helped coordinate customs, immigration, health, and harbour authorities so everything went seamlessly. You can whatsapp Isky at +62 812-6834-4549 Once ashore in Terempa, the first thing we noticed was the slow pace of island life and the natural beauty all around us. This is a small town with a big heart. Many locals live in houses built on stilts over the ocean, and everyday life here is far from easy — with groceries and provisions arriving only by ferry after an 8-hour journey. We sampled the famous Mie Terempa noodles at a cozy little café and later caught up with our friends aboard Sailing Vessel Moyana. The plan? Buddy boating through these stunning Indonesian islands together. The very next morning we lifted anchor to begin exploring the Anambas archipelago — but not before discovering a huge rope tangled around our anchor chain! While Gaurav motored slowly ahead, Vee jumped into action and cut the rope free, clearing us to continue. On the way, we headed toward a jungle waterfall and treated ourselves to some incredible boat-oven pizzas — proof that good food is always part of life aboard SV Reeva 🍕⛵. We finally arrived near Temburna Waterfall, where we’d heard rumours of a legendary seafood restaurant… and wow — were we in for a surprise! The next day, we took the dinghy ashore and hiked up to the waterfall, which flows all year round. Surrounded by jungle and fresh water, it was the perfect start to our Indonesian island adventure. This episode is part of our ongoing travel vlog series as an Indian sailing family, sharing what it’s really like to explore Southeast Asia by sailboat — from official check-ins and provisioning to hidden waterfalls, new friendships, and slow island living. 👉 Follow our journey: 📸 Instagram: @thereevaproject 📘 Facebook: The Reeva Project -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- इस ट्रैवल व्लॉग में हमारी Indian Sailing Family – The Reeva Project अनंबास द्वीपसमूह, इंडोनेशिया में ज़िंदगी की असली झलक दिखा रही है। यह एपिसोड है हमारे इंडोनेशिया सफर का एक और खूबसूरत अध्याय — एक travel vlog by an Indian sailing family। #thereevaproject #sailingindonesia #anambasislands #boatlife #liveaboardlife #indiansailors #svreeva #southchinasea #indiansailingfamily #CruisingLife #thereevaproject #lifeatsea

Viel Neues, viel Learning by Doing – aber genau daran wächst man.
This video covers the 6th leg of our long journey going East from the Philippines back to Tahiti.. How did we do? Was our advanced wx forecast accurate? What wx did we really have and was it expected? Is our strategy working so far? Our 2 main sources of wx info are the use of an experienced human wx router, Bob MacDavitt in NZ and PredictWind.com latest AI wx forecasting tools. Filmed in December 2025. Next video will cover leg 7 from the Cook Islands to Bora Bora in French Polynesia.
WATCH the racing replay from day 2 of the 44Cup Calero Marinas as a strong northwesterly blew across Lanzarote and its hilly terrain, the offshore breeze turning the race course into a challenging minefield of shifts and gusts, for tacticians to figure out. The most extreme changes came in the last race which saw 10-25 knots. Joint production: @loomapictures @sailingenergy Commentary: Matt Cornwell
We finally leave India and fly into London, ready to begin the first chapter of our European Vacation. The plan is to find a motorhome in under a week so we can hit the road and start exploring the UK and Europe properly. Magnus has been doing loads of research, so we’ve arrived with a shortlist of motorhomes to inspect and a rough idea of what our next Nutshell might be. Of course, travel has a way of surprising us. A last minute decision takes us to a mud marina, and suddenly we’re stepping aboard boats as well. It wasn’t part of the plan, but here we are looking at two possible future Nutshells and wondering if our European adventure is about to take a very unexpected turn. We’re torn between two completely different paths. Do we travel through Europe by road in warmth and comfort like we’d planned, or do we take a leap into boat life and rewrite the whole journey before it even begins It’s a genuine dilemma and one of the most decisions we’ve faced so far. We’re a bit lost. Come along as we try to make sense of it all and see how this story unfolds. As always, thanks for watching.

Full Keel vs. Fin Keel: Which one will keep you safe offshore? It is the oldest debate in cruising. Traditional sailors swear by the heavy-duty tracking of a full keel, while modern sailors love the speed and agility of a fin keel. But when you are thousands of miles from land and a storm hits, which hull shape do you want under your feet? In this video, we compare Full Keel vs. Fin Keel across 5 critical categories for ocean crossing: Heavy Weather Handling: Which boat heaves-to better and tracks straighter in a gale? Grounding & Durability: What happens when you hit a container or run aground? Repair at Sea: Which rudder is easier to fix when disaster strikes? Speed & Performance: Is the speed of a fin keel worth the trade-off in comfort? Autopilot & Tracking: Which boat wears out your self-steering gear faster? If you are planning to cross an ocean, you need to watch this before you buy your boat. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Great Keel Debate 01:02 1. Handling in Heavy Weather (Comfort vs. Speed) 02:20 2. Durability & Grounding Risks (Encapsulated vs. Bolted) 03:24 3. Maintenance & Repair at Sea (Skeg vs. Spade Rudder) 04:47 4. Performance & Speed on Long Passages 06:47 5. Steering & Tracking (Autopilot Stress) 08:55 Outro: Which Keel Fits Your Style? 🔔 Subscribe for more sailboat design comparisons, bluewater cruising tips, and honest boat reviews. 💬 Team Full Keel or Team Fin Keel? This is the first video of my new series where I show you guys how I spec up different lines. In this video I start out with a fun challenging project, building up Runner Tails for a TP 52. Im using Marlow Ropes MGP PBO/Vectran blended cover with a dyneema D-12 78 core. I use Kingfish Mafioli Dyneema chafe sleeve at the splice and the first 13' and then I finish it up with a light weight Kingfisher mafioli Swiftcord tail. There are many ways how to do this, this is how I build my runners for a boat of this caliber. As well I am a trained and certified rigger, so just because you watched my video does not make your certified or trained. Enjoy the video and shoot me a comment if you have questions or suggestions for my next video in this series.

After Hospital Delays, Cold Weather, and Missed Windows, we finally point the bow south… after hospital delays, cold snaps, and way too much staring at weather models. ❄️⛵️ This leg takes us from York River Yacht Haven in Gloucester, VA down to Wrightsville Beach, NC, with all the nerves that come from leaving the Chesapeake and thinking very hard about Cape Hatteras. From missed weather windows to second-guessing every decision, this is one of those passages where the mental game is just as intense as the sailing. Will the weather cooperate? Will Hatteras behave? Will we ever stop refreshing Windy? Spoiler: we leave anyway. If you’ve ever delayed a departure “just one more day,” worried about rounding a cape, or wondered why sailors talk about weather like it’s a personal enemy — this one’s for you. #ColdWeatherSailing #SailingAnxiety #ChesapeakeBay #CapeHatteras
