In this episode of our Arctic sailing documentary, we explore the dramatic fjords and remote anchorages of Svalbard. From Ny Ålesund we navigate into Kongsfjorden towards the imposing front of Kronebreen, carefully assessing drifting ice and the possibility of uncharted shallows as we approach the glacier. At Peirsonhamna anchorage, we maintain an ice watch as icebergs drift through the bay, testing our anchoring strategy and Arctic seamanship. We even attempt to move a drifting bergy bit with the dinghy to better understand the scale and force of these frozen masses. Ashore, we visit the historic marble mining remains of Ny London, founded by Ernest Mansfield’s Northern Exploration Company in 1911. Rusting machinery, abandoned railway tracks and weathered cabins stand as stark reminders of early industrial ambition in the High Arctic. In Ny Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost settlements, our friend Linda guides us through its history — from coal mining town to international Arctic research hub. We see the historic telegraph station and the mooring mast used for Roald Amundsen’s 1926 North Pole airship expedition. Continuing south, we sail into Tempelfjorden and anchor at Bionahamna beneath the striking sedimentary formations of Temple Mountain. We approach Tunabreen glacier in calm conditions, capturing Polaris against the vast Arctic ice landscape. Dense fog makes sailing difficult and we almost collide with Sailing with Six on Happy Days. Davis' visa for Brazil gets rejected and we scramble to solve that dilemma which racing the clock before we loose Starlink connection as its BANNED in Namibia. À l’arrivée, nous mouillons sur fond de sable avec une bonne tenue. La mer est calme, le plan d’eau bien abrité et le paysage superbe. L’après-midi, profitant du calme à bord, je prépare un gâteau de semoule pour l’équipage. Ambiance détendue. En fin de journée, nous partons à terre pour une courte marche dans les hauteurs ; relief escarpé et belles vues sur la côte. Je prends l’annexe pour rejoindre la ville et compléter le gasoil. Retour à bord sans difficulté. Le mouillage reste tranquille. Repos, entretien courant du bord et surveillance régulière du mouillage. Conditions toujours favorables. En route vers Puerto de La Estaca (île de El Hierro) Nous relevons l’ancre et mettons le cap sur El Hierro. Navigation agréable vent arrière, mer maniable et bonne allure. Entrée au port sans difficulté. Amarrage effectué, bassin calme. We’re getting ready to sail from the UK to Europe as Magnus sits his CEVNI exam, tackles wiring breakthroughs and sorts out last‑minute boat jobs on Little Nutshell. A storm rolls in while we wait on lithium batteries and solar panels before our North Sea crossing. We leave Suffolk Yacht Club and head for Shotley Marina to pick up the solar panels we’ve been waiting weeks for. Late that night Magnus goes online to sit his CEVNI exam. It’s not an easy test but he passes first go, which means we’re now legal to sail in Europe. All our i’s are dotted and our t’s crossed. It feels good. Magnus does a beer review for Old Midnight Hen while a storm brews outside Little Nutshell. He also tackles a mysterious leak on board. Nothing seems obviously wrong, so he swaps a few parts around and it appears to fix the problem for now. It’s time to do the paperwork for leaving the UK and sailing to Belgium. Magnus files our departure papers online and it’s all starting to feel very real and very exciting. He then gets stuck into the boat’s wiring and finally works out what’s what. His chook scratchings turn into a proper wiring diagram. We hit a dilemma with the beautiful wine bottle holder on the boat. We’ll never use it, but removing it means cutting into a lovely piece of the interior. Do we repurpose the space for a big drawer or leave it as is and lose valuable storage? We haven’t quite yet made up our minds what we will do, as this is a beautiful boat and we don’t want to destroy it. We’ll see. Time will tell which way we go with this. We’re still waiting on the lithium batteries and solar panels from Renogy. They’re not great at communicating and the delivery is well past the published timeframe. It’s frustrating because we can’t cross the North Sea until everything arrives. Winter weather windows are few and far between, so the delays are holding us up. The new lithium batteries finally arrive and Magnus gets to work installing them and sorting out the battery box.
