An evidently very disappointed Tom Slingsby explains that despite the lottery-like conditions, the Bonds Flying Roos team simply did not sail well enough on Day 2 to capitalise on their Day 1 performance.

US Sail GP team skipper Taylor Canfield was clearly delighted with their event win and spoke glowingly of their crew with a special mention for one of the fleet’s most powerful Grinders, Anna Weis.

The new Artemis team from Sweden continued to show promise during the Sydney event, but skipper Nathan Outteridge is looking to turn that into more consistent results at the top of the fleet.

Following a less than optimal first day of racing, Emirates GBR’s skipper Dylan Fletcher was very happy with their second place in the event Final – placing them at the top of the season leader board.

Despite finishing third in the event Final, the Los Gallos’ skipper Diego Botin was happy with their consistently high performance across the weekend.

Before leaving the Dominican Republic for two months, we squeezed in one last adventure. We visited a local farm owned by friends where the kids roamed free, petted cows and bulls, and even rode horses — the kind of simple, wild childhood moments we love about this life. Back on the sailboat, it was time for the not-so-glamorous side of cruising: prepping the boat to sit safely on a mooring ball while we fly back to Canada to visit family. Lines doubled, systems shut down, everything secured. One final beach day at Playa Grande… and then the long travel marathon begins: dinghy ride, taxi, two flights with a 2 and 3 year old, and one last car ride to Grandma’s house in Quebec. In less than 24 hours we go from Caribbean heat to crisp fall air, vibrant autumn colours, and apple picking with family. I’ve been thinking a lot today about expectations. Before I left, I had this quiet picture in my head of what this would feel like. I thought there would be a moment where everything just clicked. Where I’d stand on deck, look around, and think: I could stay here forever. I’m still waiting for that moment. And if I’m honest, part of me is worried it won’t come. The days out here are real. Some are calm, some are chaotic. Some are productive, some are just long. There are beautiful sunsets, yes. There are dolphins. There’s freedom. But there’s also tiredness. Small frustrations. Doubt that creeps in at night when it’s dark and loud. I think I expected the “forever” feeling to be constant. Instead, it comes in flashes. Five minutes of pure peace. A laugh at myself. A perfectly trimmed sail. Then it passes, and I’m back to being a normal human in the middle of the Atlantic. Today wasn’t dramatic. I adjusted a few things on deck. Cleaned up. Ate something simple. Sat for a while just watching the horizon move. I kept asking myself if this was the moment - it wasn’t. Maybe the lesson is that I’m not supposed to feel like I can stay forever. Maybe this isn’t about escaping into some endless bliss. Maybe it’s about being here fully, even when it doesn’t match the picture I had in my head. I’m learning that acceptance is quieter than excitement. We're starting a major catamaran refit and one of the first jobs is a big one - Iain pulls down our saloon ceiling to discover that a massive area of our coach roof has a rotten balsa core, and it needs a lot of fibreglass repair work to make it safe before we can even consider going back out to sea again. While Brioni is unwell, Iain has to tackle this project alone and it's pretty daunting. What does restoring a 200-year-old Danish barn have to do with wooden boat building? Quite a lot, actually. In this episode, I travel to Denmark to help my friend Mikkel transition his online boatbuilding school into a hands-on learning space. Together, we repair and restore part of an 1800s timber-frame barn using traditional materials and methods — lime mortar, reclaimed bricks, scarf joints, and careful structural thinking. Along the way, we talk about: • Timber frame repairs and structural problem solving • Why lime mortar is better than cement for historic buildings • Reusing original materials whenever possible • How traditional construction mirrors wooden boat restoration • The philosophy of repair vs. replacement • Preserving history while adapting buildings for modern use There’s a strong connection between repairing an old boat and restoring an old building. In both cases, it’s about understanding structure, respecting materials, keeping as much original fabric as possible, and solving puzzles thoughtfully. The RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show 2026 saw over 9,000 people visit Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre in the UK over the weekend of 21st & 22nd February to take in the feast of boats on display. There is a plethora of dinghy sailing classes in the UK, which is both a blessing and a curse for the sport, with some allowing restricted development over the years and others being almost completely open in design. Strict One Design classes have no change at all, whilst a few decide to make evolutionary changes, which can help the longevity of equipment, or make the boat easier to sail, without making existing boats uncompetitive. There were more classes celebrating significant anniversaries at the show than those we talked to, but a combination of time and availability led us the ones we feature here.
