Ineke van der Weijden is a professional sailor who is more used to skippering race yachts than being a crew member with no formal position, as has been the case for her aboard the VO 65 SISI Shortly after finishing the race Ineke spoke to us about how their race went, how good it was to have former Clipper Race colleagues as crew and how much she enjoyed not being skipper for a change. Ineke’s story is an inspiring one; she grew up sailing dinghies as a child but only returned to sailing after many years in the corporate world, signing up for the 2017 Clipper Round the World Race. After taking part in the 2019 race she ultimately returned as a Clipper Race skipper aboard Perseverance for the 2023 race, finishing second overall. @RolexMiddleSeaRace_

Following our previews of the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, I wanted to look at what makes Fort Lauderdale different and which yachts I would particularly recommend seeing this year. The show runs from 28 October to 1 November, with displays spread across several locations, including Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Pier Sixty-Six and Superyacht Village. We start with American builders, including Westport and its new 41-metre Westport 135, before looking at Ocean Alexander's new 40P and 30P models, both making their world debuts. Azimut is bringing 13 yachts to the show, ranging from the high-performance Verve 48 to the Grande 36M. Princess also has two interesting debuts, including the X90 and the new C48 Open, the British builder's first outboard-powered centre console. But Fort Lauderdale is also where you find yachts that are particularly important to the American market. We look at the Viking 70 Convertible, designed for serious offshore fishing while still offering the accommodation expected of a luxury motor yacht. At the larger end of the show, Oceanco is bringing the 92.9-metre DRA, formerly known as EQUANIMITY and TRANQUILITY. Following an extensive rebuild, she has been transformed into a vessel equipped for diving, scientific research and marine exploration. I also look at some of the brokerage yachts worth visiting, including the 64-metre Royal Hakvoort SCOUT, offered for sale through Fraser, and the Trinity-built SUMMER DANCE, available through Northrop & Johnson. There is also a look at the enormous range of smaller boats, power catamarans, tenders, outboard-powered centre consoles and marine equipment that make Fort Lauderdale so different from the European shows. Can a Sharrow propeller outperform a standard model? We put both to the test on the Detroit River to find out. We conducted a head-to-head boat propeller test using two identical vessels to determine if advanced design features actually translate to real-world gains. With identical engines and loads, we measured performance across the RPM range to provide clear, unbiased performance data for boaters considering an upgrade. Our on-the-water analysis highlights speed differences at 4,000 RPM, where the Sharrow propeller reached 37.3 MPH compared to the 35.8 MPH recorded by the conventional prop. Installation of DM20 synthetic stays from @fabricaworkshop onto Paikea's carbon rig is bearing completion. The missing piece of the puzzle is the torsion cable forestay... we still need to save up the pocket money for the furler 😅 But don't they just look beeeeeautiful? 😍 The new synthetic sidestays and lowers are 14kg lighter than our wire stays/PBO lowers combo from before. Sometimes everything just comes together for the perfect day on the water! We leave Onancock, Virginia, and sail 40 miles south down the Chesapeake Bay to beautiful Cape Charles. With the wind behind us, flat seas, and an average speed of over 6.5 knots under sail, it really doesn't get much better than this! Once we arrive, we explore the historic waterfront town of Cape Charles, wander through the charming downtown shops, and relax on its beautiful white sand beach. How dangerous is it really to sail around the world? Are pirates something sailors should actually worry about? Over the last couple of years I have posted a number of videos on my youtube channel showing our 30ft Sagitta catamaran under sail. As a result people have asked for an interior tour, so here it is. Sagitta was built in our garden and launched in 1991. There are some youtube videos of it sailing back then, so please check them out. Sagitta is a "sailors boat" - so it's a performance cruiser for two couples. It was designed to daysail with eight onboard, offer drinks/food for six and sleep four. This boat has actually cruised from the UK as far as Trieste in Italy, yet was outright winner of the 2026 multihull class in the Round the Island race (Isle of Wight, typically 1000 entries) The saloon headroom is limited to keep windage low, and, more importantly, to make winching and working the deck layout easier. Of course there is full headroom in the hulls. We fitted two companionways, thus reducing the times you need to cross the saloon. When sailing you can easily enter via either to sit in the saloon, or use the starboard one to access the galley, the port one for the heads. More important than filling the boat with bunks is a good head/shower compartment and of course an excellent galley. The central heating is ducted to both hulls and the saloon. The portable fridge/freezer means food can be taken from home, as it will be kept frozen using the car's 12v supply. In each hull is a comfortable double bunk, located aft for the least motion, with sitting headroom. There is no point in having an overwide bunk at sea as, even on a multihull, one rolls around too much. The table drops down for an extra berth. Also essential is plenty of stowage for cruising "stuff". So under one saloon seat are enough tools to rebuild the boat, plus a 300Ahr Lifepo4 battery. There is a big watertank under the other seat. Resin/glass/paint etc is stored in a cockpit locker, along with spare fuel cans, "dirty" engine spares etc. Sails are stored in a big forward locker, anchors and fenders in the forward bridgedeck lockers.
