Sailing 120nm hard upwind was always going to be a challenge. When the wind increased to 25kts things got very bumpy and I was faced with a decision, reef lots and slow right down or continue with lots of sail and get to the shelter of an island faster. I knew what Marie would prefer and I knew my own feelings. Did I find a compromise? Enjoy. Lulu is for sale. It is with regret that I have to let her go but I am now focussing on my new boat, Welkin and can't keep both. I have the description from the Apollo Duck Ad here detailing all the parts and work done in full. Please contact me if you want to know more: ------- "Lulu" The Lugger (number: 1277) is for sale after 4 years sailing her myself. During this time she's proven to be a faithful teacher who's been an awsome boat both on lakes and the sea. Super stable, lots of fun and ideal for any water. She can be rigged up in less than 30 minutes. I'm selling her as i'm trading up for something larger right now. She's in fantastic condition and is a chance to own a ready to go Drascombe Lugger that's been well looked after. The woodwork is oiled, she's been recently polished and all her spars are freshly sanded and re-varnished and epoxied where relevant. She's a very clean boat, ready to sail with all new parts, nothing to be done. Main features: Brand new mitre-cut sails from R&J Sails (June 2024) with barely half a seasons sailing in them. Still very crispy and they make a huge difference. Upgraded Seasure Jib furler and swivel makes for tangle free and easy to furl the jib up. More modern Kickback rudder. Shrouds replaced March 2024 Nice hardwood floorboards All lines/sheets are new with 3:1 mainsheet system making for far less complicated mainsheet assembly. (Original mainsheet is still intact). Comes with full trailering cover and also mooring cover. Se sits on a Severn Valley swinging cradle trailer which is roadworthy. Wheel bearings are fine, with brand new swinging cradle and comes with spare wheel. Makes launching and recovery super easy, especially when solo. Comes with a unique battery box that can be easily removed. Has 4 switches and leads for various components and is based on a brand new LifePO4 lithium battery. Comes with deck solar panel that can be removed. Comes with 2 boat tents, 1 used once. Great for cruises and stop overs. 4KG Danforth anchor with deck chocs for easy stowage. Upgraded Whale Gusher flush deck manual bilge pump AND electric Whale Supersub 500 bilge pump Upgrades and essential work She's had her lower rudder bearing replaced and strengthened (Winter 2024) - A common fault with Luggers. Motor pad bolts replaced with Drascombe supplied 316 steel bolts (Winter 2023) Waterpoof side lockers fitted and side bouyancy improved. Side locker covers to stop things falling out! External fuel tank secure points Whole host of accessories including: Fenders Boom for mainsail Oars and Rowlocks Jib stick Spinnaker with block and lines fitted to mast. mooring lines Locker drawers Rudder rest Pin and barrel and adapter for use with tiller autohelm systems like Simrad TP10 (Autohelm not included) Solar panel Removable bowsprit and more... Always further, always faster, always more elegant. The future is being written now at RM. Our teams are now working tirelessly on the development of a future sailing yacht, the details of which will be unveiled on 15 November. At RM, designing a new model involves constantly questioning the roots of our concept and our DNA in order to extract the essence. It also involves gathering feedback from owners and exploring the latest innovations from ocean racing. Woodworking, speed, sailing sensations and safety have been the guiding principles behind the thinking behind the future RM. 🎥 Charles Guilloteau

Shroud tensions on a dinghy are critical to performance, and being able to replicate those settings time and again is vital. The problem has always been that rig gauges wear as they get older, leading to decreased accuracy and you sailing with the wrong rig settings. Using another rig tension gauge, even if it’s of the same make and design, can often give two completely different numbers, which makes it near impossible to replicate settings from a tuning guide unless you have a brand-new rig gauge. This led Daniel Henderson and the team of engineers at Sea Sure to develop the Rig Gauge Pro. Designed to give you the same accurate readings time and time again, so that you can perform at your best and have confidence that your rig is set up right. Watch Daniel explain why the Rig Gauge Pro is so different. Now available from your local chandleries, including Marine Super Store, Force 4, Fox’s Chandlery, Pinnell & Bax, Hartley Boats.

Simple living, rich tradition — join us in Papua New Guinea as we cook over the fire in a handmade clay pot and experience the rhythm of island life. The morning begins with a canoe pulling alongside our boat — locals bring us one of our favourites: fresh baked cassava pudding, still warm from the fire. Not long after, they return with live mud crabs they’ve just caught by hand along the mangroves — strong, fast, and very much alive as they make a chaotic escape across the cockpit. Out here, life moves with the tides. People grow up on the sea, learning to sail, fish, and navigate from a young age — skills passed down through generations. We often talk about how it feels being here; how the community looks out for us with such care that it reminds us of being “cubs” — protected, guided, and watched over. Later, we go ashore to a small fishing outpost. Along the coast, local fishermen have built simple structures — a hut for sleeping, others for drying fish over the fire, or taking shelter when the weather turns. These places tell stories of everyday island life — resourceful, communal, and deeply connected to the ocean. We light a fire and cook in a traditional clay pot, a vessel shaped entirely by hand from local clay, then fired and hardened over coals. These pots are more than cooking tools — they hold deep cultural significance and are used during weddings, funerals, and feasts of importance. Each one represents care, continuity, and the sharing of life’s most meaningful moments. As evening falls, we return to our floating home to tackle a small but steady task — repairing wood rot on the boat, keeping her ready for the next crossing. A day of fire, craft, and quiet purpose — moments that remind us why this life at sea feels so rich and full. 🌀 A story of craft, simplicity, and connection in the islands of Papua New Guinea. 🔥 Episode 22 – Sailing Louisiades, Papua New Guinea 📍 Location: Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea 🎣 Themes: Traditional Cooking, Clay Pot Traditions, Island Culture, Ocean Communities, Simple Living, Sailing Life ⏱️ Timestamps: 0:00 – 🍮 Fresh baked cassava pudding & live mud crabs delivered by canoe 1:52 – 🐚 Life at sea & being cared for like “cubs” 2:52 – 🎥 Intro video 3:18 – 🥥 Coconut plantation — a way to provide water during droughts 4:10 – ⛵ Sailing culture — learning the ocean from childhood 7:12 – 🛖 Exploring the fisherman’s huts ashore 11:05 – 🔥 Cooking on the fire in a traditional clay pot 13:06 – ⚙️ Boat repair — fixing wood rot aboard 🫶 Support Our Journey: 💡 Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ☕ Buy us a coffee → https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef 🎁 Send us a gift → https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow Our Adventures: 📸 Instagram → @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 🎥 Poppy's YouTube → https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 Business Inquiries: onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey, we’re Ryan and Poppy — two sailors exploring the remote islands and reefs of the Pacific. Join host Bela Musits and fellow sailor Mike Malekoff aboard Mike’s Hunter 44 Deck Salon as they continue their incredible voyage up the East Coast of the United States, relocating the boat from Brunswick, Georgia to Burlington, Vermont. This episode captures their journey from Schuyler Yacht Basin to Whitehall, New York, a leg that highlights the beauty, challenges, and joy of extended cruising. Bela and Mike start the episode with a lighthearted story about waking up to wet feet after an overnight rainstorm revealed a small leak in the forward cabin. The two sailors reflect on the realities of life aboard, including quirky boat design features like the windlass placement, which—unfortunately—channels drips right into the berth. Their good humor underscores a theme that runs throughout the voyage: the ability to laugh at inconveniences and embrace the unpredictability of cruising. As they recount the day’s sail, Bela and Mike describe the serene conditions the Champlain Canal. They note the unique blend of rural scenery, historic towns, and quiet stretches of water that make this region a hidden gem for sailors. From the tree-lined banks to the glimpses of wildlife, the passage feels more like a river journey than an open-water crossing, offering a peaceful contrast to earlier, more challenging legs of the trip. Listeners will enjoy the duo’s storytelling as they detail the sequence of locks they navigated, the friendly conversations with lockmasters, and the careful boat handling required in narrow channels. For sailors planning a similar voyage, Bela and Mike share practical observations on timing, line handling, and communication—essentials for smooth transits through canal systems. Beyond the technical aspects, this episode captures the camaraderie that develops over weeks at sea. With more than three weeks aboard at this point, Bela and Mike reflect on the rhythms of cruising life: anchoring, marina stops, cooking aboard, and evenings spent recounting the day’s adventures. Their partnership and shared enthusiasm for sailing shine through, giving listeners a window into the rewarding blend of challenge and relaxation that long-distance cruising offers. The conversation also touches on the natural beauty of upstate New York, the anticipation of reaching Whitehall, and the excitement of approaching the northern end of their journey. As they near Lake Champlain, both sailors express appreciation for how diverse the East Coast cruising grounds are—from the tidal waters of Georgia and the ICW to the freshwaters of Vermont. Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a cruiser planning your own East Coast voyage, or simply someone who enjoys stories from the water, this episode offers both practical insights and entertaining anecdotes. Bela and Mike balance seamanship with humor, making their reflections relatable and engaging for anyone drawn to the cruising lifestyle.
