If you’ve been following along you know we have been on the hunt for a large expedition trawler type boat. This is one of the first ones we looked at and in so many ways it was one of the coolest boats we have seen and for a few good reasons it was actually in our price range. We knew we would need to put a good bit of sweat and elbow grease into her to make her what we wanted her to be but it was hard to tell exactly how much work that would be. Salut les loulous ⛵⚓ La nuit nous réserve déjà son lot d’aventures : la main de fer de la chaîne d’ancre casse. Départ de Pasito Blanco en direction de Ténérife. Première navigation nocturne pour nos deux équipières, une expérience intense sous les étoiles. Après une nuit en mer, nous arrivons à Punta Roja. Petite randonnée sur la Montagne Rouge. Là-haut, un panorama splendide récompense nos efforts. Mais les imprévus continuent : le moteur de l’annexe a pris l’eau et refuse de démarrer. Nous quittons Roja pour Los Cristianos avec une navigation sympathique, sans être très rapide. Je parviens finalement à réparer le moteur hors-bord. En revanche, pas de chance pour la GoPro : après cinq ans de bons et loyaux services, elle rend l’âme. HARBOR LOCKDOWN at LAS VELAS. Logic dictated a standard departure for our friends, but the sub-surface reality was a mission-critical threat to the fleet. The Navy ran aground in the harbor before a ship even hit the reef, eventually forcing authorities to string cables across the harbor entrance. On SV Agua Azul, we don't have the luxury of a tow. It stands on its own weight without being buried in the seabed. * No Burials/Births: Due to the strict Shinto prohibition against death and blood, burial on the island is still forbidden, and pregnant women or the severely ill are traditionally expected to stay on the mainland. *

La “Maruzza”, invece, resterà per qualche settimana nel cantiere marocchino di Saïdia. Questo significa una cosa sola: attraversare tutto il Marocco via terra, spingendomi tra montagne innevate, deserti infiniti e la costa selvaggia dell’oceano Atlantico, ben sotto la latitudine delle Canarie. Dopo essermi fermato a Fez e Meknès, perdendomi completamente nelle loro medine labirintiche, sono ripartito verso sud… ma il viaggio prende una piega inaspettata. Il tempo peggiora, la neve blocca i passi di montagna e le strade diventano gelide e difficili. Superata la tempesta, raggiungo le spettacolari Gole del Todra, tra fossili cambriani e canyon mozzafiato, fino ad arrivare in fondo alla strada che attraversa la Valle del Drâa, dove il deserto e le sue dune del Sahara sembrano inghiottire ogni cosa. Crossing international waters was meant to be smooth sailing… but that’s not how boat life works. In this episode, we face complete engine failure at sea, leaving us troubleshooting fuel systems, bleeding lines, and hoping she starts again. But that was just the beginning. A few days later our toilet pump stopped working (and yes… that’s as inconvenient as it sounds). Then our watermaker failed, and with six people onboard, fresh water becomes very important, very fast. Just when we thought we were in the clear, we had to jump in and swim under the boat to fix our blocked speedometer, scraping out barnacles and cleaning the hull so we could sail smoothly again. This is the real side of sailing life , constant maintenance, problem solving, and learning as we go. It’s not always sunsets and calm seas… but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Anmeldung zum Bootsdiesel-Kurs: https://boathowto.de/ Der Bootsdiesel-Kurs von BoatHowTo ist so konzipiert, dass du das erlernte Wissen für jegliche Bootsmotoren anwenden kannst. Der Kurs eignet sich für jede Marke, ob Volvo-Penta, Yanmar, Perkins, Sole, Vetus, Beta, Caterpillar oder Cummins. Im Kurs wirst du unter anderem lernen, dass Diesel aus der Industrie und Landwirtschaft häufig von diversen Firmen eingekauft werden, marinisiert werden und dann in unterschiedlichen Farben verkauft werden, wobei die Motorbasis identisch ist. Mal ist der Ölfilter auf der einen Seite, mal auf der anderen, aber das spielt keine Rolle. Alle Dieselmotoren funktionieren nach demselben Prinzip. Ob du nun ein Segelboot mit einem kleinen 3-Zylinder oder ein Motorboot mit gleich 2 großen Sechszylindern hast, spielt keine Rolle, die Wartungsarbeiten sind größtenteils deckungsgleich. Im Bootsdiesel-Kurs legen wir Wert darauf, dass du die Funktionsweise eines Dieselmotors und dessen Komponenten von Grund auf verstehst, statt nur irgendwelche Checklisten auswendig zu lernen. Denn dann bist du in der Lage, an jedem beliebigen Bootsmotor die Wartung durchzuführen und Fehler zu beheben. In jedem Bootsdiesel findet die Kraftstoffverbrennung im Brennraum statt, hier haben wir einen oder mehrere Kolben, die sich auf und ab bewegen und so die Kurbelwelle drehen. Jeder Bootsdiesel benötigt somit Kraftstoff, den er verbrennt. Jeder Bootsdiesel wird außerdem mit Öl geschmiert, das regelmäßig gewechselt werden muss. Auch im Getriebe oder Saildrive gibt es Öl. Desweiteren werden alle Bootsmotoren mit Wasser gekühlt, wobei zweikreisgekühlte Motoren nicht direkt durch Seewasser gekühlt werden, sondern durch ein Kühlmittel, das wiederum durch Seewasser gekühlt wird. Wir besprechen beide Arten der Kühlung in unserem Kurs, und auch exotische Kühlungen wie die Kielkühlung. Nicht alles ist identisch. Ältere Bootsdiesel haben ein mechanisches Einspritzsystem, während neuere Motoren manchmal komplexere Einspritzsysteme haben – vielleicht hast du ja schonmal von Common-Rail-Motoren gehört. Auch hier wieder: Du lernst beide Einspritzsysteme kennen, so bist du nicht nur für den Motor deines jetzigen Bootes ideal vorbereitet, sondern auch, falls du mal ein anderes Boot kaufst. Und natürlich lernst du auch alle Komponenten kennen, die ein Motor haben kann, aber nicht muss, zum Beispiel einen Turbolader oder einen Ladeluftkühler. Wenn das jetzt alles noch etwas kompliziert klingt, keine Sorge: Der Kurs ist geeignet für Anfängerinnen und Anfänger ohne Vorwissen, aber genauso für diejenigen, die schon an Motoren gearbeitet haben. We’re leaving paradise… 🌴⛵ Wayag, Raja Ampat has been nothing short of breathtaking, but reality finally catches up with us. We’re running low on food, the wind isn’t playing along, and it’s time to change plans. Instead of staying put, we decide to point the bow toward Ambon in search of wind, supplies, and a little more fun. Our final night in Wayag almost ends in disaster. A series of small mistakes snowball as we lose phone battery, daylight, and depth awareness — a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong at sea. What started as a simple outing turns into a tense scramble to get back to the boat safely. Thankfully, we make it back just in time, shaken but wiser, and begin preparing for the next leg of our journey. This episode is a reminder that adventure isn’t just turquoise water and perfect anchorages — it’s decision-making, consequences, and learning when to move on. Sailing in Svalbard brought us face to face with a walrus and a polar bear in the High Arctic. Solid-state lithium batteries have completely changed how we power ARGO. In this episode, we upgrade our sailboat’s battery system to safer, lighter, longer-lasting lithium – and the difference is immediate. You can research sailboat power systems endlessly – but some lessons only land once you’re living with them. From day one on ARGO, we’ve battled battery and power issues. Backwards wiring drained our original setup, replacements didn’t solve the problem, and after a few days of rain we were still watching our power disappear. When it became clear we didn’t have enough capacity to comfortably head off on more remote adventures, something had to change. After plenty of procrastination, spreadsheets, squinting at the bank balance and late-night research, the promise of doubling our usable power finally tipped the scales. In this episode, we take the plunge and upgrade to solid-state Lithium batteries – and the difference is already huge. Why we chose this setup: – Safest lithium batteries available – Around 10,000 cycles (at 80–90% depth of discharge) – Victron Energy compliant – Massive weight saving – 18kg each vs 60kg each for our old AGMs Jason takes ARGO down to the Gold Coast for installation (a 7-hour ordeal), then sneaks home via a cheeky short-cut through Canaipa Passage, threading through for a much deeper water journey. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Knowing we now have the power to sail further, stay longer, and live aboard without constantly worrying about batteries makes this upgrade one of the biggest confidence boosts we’ve had yet.
