Gitana 18 is the trimaran which has been designed and built to take the great offshore records, including the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe, to another world. The crowds were out in force on Saturday 14th February 2026 to catch a glimpse of this incredible machine as it was wheeled out of the yard and towards the awaiting crane to put her into the water. The innovations are massive on this yacht, and it has the potential to take the Ultim class to a whole new level of speed, so the anticipation of seeing the yacht sailing in the next few weeks, once they’ve added and tested the rest of the systems, is huge. At 32 metres long and 23 metres wide, Ultim trimarans always look extraordinary, but there is something other-worldly about Gitana 18. The aerodynamics have been taken to the next level and the graphics, which will look even more striking with the rig, are fantastic. The 38-metre-tall mast was then gently escorted along the dock and stepped in the yacht, marking a milestone in this three-year project. The main foils have to be fitted while the yacht is in the water and are just one of the processes that needs to be completed as she’s carefully commissioned. We then take a look at a fantastic animation which shows us how the yacht will work in its different modes, and hear from Charles Caudrelier, Skipper of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild Gitana 18 Ultim. 21 jours de navigation au cœur de l’Atlantique commencent… avec ce mélange d’excitation, d’inconnu et d’intensité qu’on ne peut pas tricher en mer. On quitte les îles Canaries avec un vent léger, juste ce qu’il faut pour permettre à l’équipage de s’amariner en douceur et trouver son rythme pour cette grande traversée océanique. À bord du catamaran Bali 4.6, la vie s’organise rapidement : quarts de nuit de 3 heures, équipes bien définies, et l’heure du bateau comme seule référence pour éviter les pièges des fuseaux horaires en pleine mer. La routine de navigation s’installe… mais chaque journée réserve son lot de surprises. Entre les premiers couchers de soleil sur l’Atlantique, une mer calme, les rencontres magiques avec les baleines et les dauphins, et les premières lignes à l’eau pour la pêche au large, l’aventure prend une dimension bien réelle. In this episode Colin describes his new fuel polishing system that he designed, after getting a bad dose of diesel bug in one of our fuel tanks. We also start to rebuild the hulls of the boat after grinding out all of the blisters that we found when we hauled out. If you’ve been following along you know we have been on the hunt for a large expedition trawler type boat. This is one of the first ones we looked at and in so many ways it was one of the coolest boats we have seen and for a few good reasons it was actually in our price range. We knew we would need to put a good bit of sweat and elbow grease into her to make her what we wanted her to be but it was hard to tell exactly how much work that would be. Salut les loulous ⛵⚓ La nuit nous réserve déjà son lot d’aventures : la main de fer de la chaîne d’ancre casse. Départ de Pasito Blanco en direction de Ténérife. Première navigation nocturne pour nos deux équipières, une expérience intense sous les étoiles. Après une nuit en mer, nous arrivons à Punta Roja. Petite randonnée sur la Montagne Rouge. Là-haut, un panorama splendide récompense nos efforts. Mais les imprévus continuent : le moteur de l’annexe a pris l’eau et refuse de démarrer. Nous quittons Roja pour Los Cristianos avec une navigation sympathique, sans être très rapide. Je parviens finalement à réparer le moteur hors-bord. En revanche, pas de chance pour la GoPro : après cinq ans de bons et loyaux services, elle rend l’âme. If the NAVIGATION CHANNEL is obstructed by Navy cables, the logic flow stops. This is the forensic truth of DOMINICAN HARBOR LOGISTICS. . THE REVEAL 🔓 DIY FAILS. To restore the system miles from a chandlery, we spent the weekend troubleshooting local failures. We secured the INVERTER with custom-cut boards so the gear doesn't fall over on passage and executed a forensic fix on a leaking AC unit using DOUBLE HOSE CLAMPS to stop salt water from dripping onto the electronics. This was a sub-surface necessity to keep The Nest operational while the local infrastructure failed. . THE CLIFFHANGER ⏳ 11:36. The situation evolved into a survival risk during the SUPER BOWL. It stands on its own weight without being buried in the seabed. * No Burials/Births: Due to the strict Shinto prohibition against death and blood, burial on the island is still forbidden, and pregnant women or the severely ill are traditionally expected to stay on the mainland. *

Life at anchor outside Luperón Harbour isn’t always calm… We’re making water with our watermaker, tackling boat projects (with Coral and Kai actually helping this time!), and enjoying cruiser life — from the New Amsterdam cruisers show to the kids playing in the central parque. We spend extra money to make sure our mooring ball is extra solid for hurricane season. Then Hurricane Erin, a Category 5 storm, passes nearby… and just when we think we’re in the clear, we’re jolted awake by sirens in the middle of the night. La “Maruzza”, invece, resterà per qualche settimana nel cantiere marocchino di Saïdia. Questo significa una cosa sola: attraversare tutto il Marocco via terra, spingendomi tra montagne innevate, deserti infiniti e la costa selvaggia dell’oceano Atlantico, ben sotto la latitudine delle Canarie. Dopo essermi fermato a Fez e Meknès, perdendomi completamente nelle loro medine labirintiche, sono ripartito verso sud… ma il viaggio prende una piega inaspettata. Il tempo peggiora, la neve blocca i passi di montagna e le strade diventano gelide e difficili. Superata la tempesta, raggiungo le spettacolari Gole del Todra, tra fossili cambriani e canyon mozzafiato, fino ad arrivare in fondo alla strada che attraversa la Valle del Drâa, dove il deserto e le sue dune del Sahara sembrano inghiottire ogni cosa. Crossing international waters was meant to be smooth sailing… but that’s not how boat life works. In this episode, we face complete engine failure at sea, leaving us troubleshooting fuel systems, bleeding lines, and hoping she starts again. But that was just the beginning. A few days later our toilet pump stopped working (and yes… that’s as inconvenient as it sounds). Then our watermaker failed, and with six people onboard, fresh water becomes very important, very fast. Just when we thought we were in the clear, we had to jump in and swim under the boat to fix our blocked speedometer, scraping out barnacles and cleaning the hull so we could sail smoothly again. This is the real side of sailing life , constant maintenance, problem solving, and learning as we go. It’s not always sunsets and calm seas… but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Next up: we sail back down the coast of Thailand toward Malaysia for our big haul out.
