With three hurricanes roaming around the Atlantic basin it wasn't an ideal time to be completing our Atlantic circuit! We did have what looked like a decent weather window to sail from the Azores to Portugal but we always knew with all the disturbance the Atlantic was not at its most stable. Hurricane Gabrielle was making its turn near Bermuda and all the models had it disappearing into the Northern Atlantic. We are extending our wheelhouse so that we can have a full cockpit enclosure AND move the mainsheet from the top of the aft cabin to above the wheelhouse (better safety and a better sheeting angle). This is the first prototype frame (will extend to the full cockpit width) so that Jane can start making the rest of the soft enclosure. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. This cruiser has been meticulously maintained, just had a bottom job November 2024 & is ready for extended offshore or coastal sailing. It features a spacious two-cabin, two-head layout, ideal for families or crew. The master suite forward includes an ensuite head, while the aft cabin provides generous space for guests or additional storage. The saloon is bright and airy, offering a large U-shaped dinette with seating for six, plus an additional settee. The galley is fully equipped with a three-burner stove, oven, large refrigerator, freezer, and ample storage for provisions. On deck, the wide cockpit is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring twin helm stations, a large folding table, and easy access to the swim platform. The in-mast furling mainsail and furling genoa make sail handling simple and efficient, even with a small crew. All lines are led aft to the cockpit for added safety. Powered by a Yanmar 75hp diesel engine, the boat has been regularly serviced, ensuring smooth and reliable performance. Other notable features include a full electronics suite with autopilot, chartplotter, wind, depth, and speed instruments, plus a bow thruster for ease of maneuvering in tight spaces. Whether you’re looking for a liveaboard or a performance cruiser, this boat is in excellent condition and ready for new adventures.

Our grand plan was a west-to-east crossing of the Atlantic, and we set sail with high hopes. Initially, everything was smooth sailing, but sometimes, sailing, like life, doesn't go according to plan. Our journey took an unexpected turn when we were battered by relentless rain and squalls. To make matters worse, our windvane broke—for the second time! With 2,200 nautical miles to the Azores and only 70 to return to St. Martin, the choice was clear. It's always better to face a delay than to tackle a major problem at sea. So, very disappointed, we turned back, getting drenched by a huge downpour on our return to St. Martin. We repaired the windvane, bought some new foul-weather gear, and found a better weather window.
