This week we continue heading south on the Intracoastal Waterway, making our way toward Palm Beach, Florida. What starts as a fairly normal cruising day quickly turns into something much more confronting. Between boat jobs like waterproofing our cushions and settling into life underway again, we’re hit with a scary reminder of how unpredictable life aboard can be when Nala suddenly becomes unwell and we have to rush her to the vet. It’s the kind of moment no cruising pet owner ever wants to face — and one that forces us to think seriously about what could happen when we’re far more remote. With a Pacific crossing on the horizon, this experience becomes a wake-up call about preparedness, medical planning, and the realities of life at sea when help isn’t just around the corner. This episode is a mix of cruising, boat maintenance, and real life — the good, the stressful, and everything in between. ⛵ Sailing south on the ICW 🐾 A health scare with Nala 🛠️ Boat jobs & preparations 🌊 Preparing mentally for the Pacific Thanks for being here and supporting our journey — it truly means the world to us. When your outboard engine doesn't wanna start, it can of course have multiple reasons. From experience, the carburetor is the most common. Those little nozzles can clog up quickly and practically starve the engine. Sounds difficult but no worries, it's actually pretty straight forward. In this video I show you how to take out the carburetor, open it up, clean it safely, and reassemble everything with expected result, the engine starts and runs like new! Tools required: Socketwrenchset, screwdrivers, some rags and patience. So let's fix our Yamaha 8HP two-stroke outboard together! Enjoy the video, please like and subscribe and leave a comment, we are looking forward to it :-)!

In last week's episode, I arrived at the marina to find my Torqeedo Travel 1103C outboard had been damaged by a severe wind storm. It wasn't so much the 40 mph winds, as it was the direction of the winds directly into the marina. According to the marina staff, there were 3-4 foot waves rolling right over the breakwater and swamping all the marina docks. Several boats were damaged and the only other sailboat at the lake broke from its mooring ball and ended up against the shore. So in this episode, the replacement part arrives from Torqeedo. I teardown the Torqeedo Travel motor, install the new part, reassemble the motor and perform a function check. Overall, it was a pretty easy installation, albeit quite expensive. This incident really has me wondering if keeping my sailboat in a marina in this volatile part of Colorado is sustainable. There's a reason this marina only has 12 slips and I've been the only sailboat to ever rent a slip here. Maybe it's time to become a daysailor? EP64 of Sailing Roam is full of surprises! What started as prepping the anchor chain became a complete windlass replacement. Watch Geri and Shawn clean, repair, and upgrade their cruising catamaran in this hands-on refit episode. After nearly 18 months of refit work, it was finally time to tackle one of the last untouched systems on our sailboat refit: the windlass and chain locker, all in preparation for a shiny new anchor chain. In this episode, we dig into inspecting our existing windlass and gypsy to see if they were still serviceable—or if repair, maintenance, or full replacement was unavoidable. What we found was worse than expected, and honestly a little scary: the windlass was in such poor condition that we’re lucky it hadn’t failed on us already. As Shawn wrestled with removing the windlass, we uncovered another major issue hiding in plain sight—a rotten wood bulkhead inside the chain locker. Years of rust, dirt, and debris from the old galvanized anchor chain had turned the chain locker into a filthy, neglected space. Geri took on the big cleanup job, sanding and cleaning the chain locker down to bare surfaces, while Shawn cut out the rotten bulkhead entirely. To make sure this problem never comes back, we replaced the failed wood with Coosa board, a rot-proof composite material ideal for marine environments. We tabbed the Coosa in with fiberglass, creating a strong, permanent structural repair. After the glass work cured, Geri sanded the resin drips, applied epoxy primer, and finished the space with bilge coat paint. The transformation is incredibly satisfying—watching a grimy, rust-stained chain locker become a clean, bright, and beautiful space again. The locker is now fully prepped and ready to receive new anchor chain… just as soon as the new windlass arrives. This episode is a perfect example of refit life: one project leads to another, unexpected problems surface, and in the end the boat is safer, stronger, and better than before. If you enjoy sailboat refits, anchoring systems, windlass repairs, chain locker rebuilds, and real-world cruising prep, this episode is for you. 00:00 Short intro 00:13 Channel intro 00:32 Remove windlass 12:01 Clean out chain locker 12:58 Sand chain locker 17:31 Clean out rotten wood 20:43 Replace wood with Coosa 25:00 Prime and Paint 27:36 Wrap up 27:58 Like, subscribe, BYE! 28:20 End Card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. After an ice storm and a late-night show, we return to our sailboat to see what winter left behind. Frozen lines, rigging checks, and a full winter boat inspection to make sure everything survived. After the storm, we bring in provisions for the weekend, wake up to quiet marina mornings, make coffee and a warm omelet bowl with music playing in the background, and take care of a failing electrical outlet onboard. This is real winter sailboat life—maintenance, problem-solving, and slowing down together. Can You Really Sew a Sail Yourself? Sure! Removing and repairing a genoa isn’t exactly a small job – especially when you’re doing it yourself. In this episode, Jason takes on the first challenge solo: figuring out how to remove the genoa and get it off the boat with no help! Once it’s down, good mate, Jim, steps in and the real test begins – resewing the sunshade protection using a Sailrite sewing machine neither of them had ever used before. What could possibly go wrong? Armed with the instruction manual (and a fair bit of optimism), the boys tackle the stitching and, against the odds, end up with a seriously solid result. No ball gowns will be sewn anytime soon, but the genoa is repaired, the stitching is strong, and ARGO is ready to go sailing again – all with minimal swearing. Huge thanks to Jim for the use of the machine and for giving up his time to help get ARGO back up and sailing smoothly. Right… onto the next boat jobs. Thanks for watching. A deep dive into the digital design workflow behind a custom composite shower floor for a sailboat refit. This isn't just CAD—it's the full cycle: starting with hands-on "Cardboard Assisted Design" (CAD) for ergonomics and feel, translating that into precise 3D computer models, verifying fits with 3D scanning, and finally preparing files for 3D printing the moulds. In this video, we cover: Transitioning from a physical cardboard mock-up to a digital 3D model. Detailed CAD design of the shower floor's drainage: creating a central valley, specifying falls (slopes), and integrating a large inspection hatch. Engineering the hatch: seal compression stops, water flow ramps, and dual retention systems (bungee & mechanical). Designing the integrated sump with a hair trap and carbon fiber drain tube. Using 3D scanning to verify CAD models against the actual, irregular hull geometry for critical component placement (like the toilet). Preparing the CAD model for 3D printing: splitting the mould, print settings for vacuum infusion (shells, infill), and lessons on material consistency. This video is for makers, boat builders, and anyone interested in the hybrid process of blending traditional problem-solving with modern digital fabrication tools. Full Keel vs. Fin Keel: Which one will keep you safe offshore? It is the oldest debate in cruising. Traditional sailors swear by the heavy-duty tracking of a full keel, while modern sailors love the speed and agility of a fin keel. But when you are thousands of miles from land and a storm hits, which hull shape do you want under your feet? In this video, we compare Full Keel vs. Fin Keel across 5 critical categories for ocean crossing: Heavy Weather Handling: Which boat heaves-to better and tracks straighter in a gale? Grounding & Durability: What happens when you hit a container or run aground? Repair at Sea: Which rudder is easier to fix when disaster strikes? Speed & Performance: Is the speed of a fin keel worth the trade-off in comfort? Autopilot & Tracking: Which boat wears out your self-steering gear faster? If you are planning to cross an ocean, you need to watch this before you buy your boat. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Great Keel Debate 01:02 1. Handling in Heavy Weather (Comfort vs. Speed) 02:20 2. Sail Swim & Sundowners Our Offgrid Liveaboard Sailing Life: Preparing to Sail Around the World Ep104
Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we drop anchor in a beautiful island anchorage for a few days of true off-grid sailing life — and it’s the perfect chance to properly test our brand-new solar upgrade on our sailboat. This is real cruising sailboat life as we prepare for sailing around the world, balancing boat systems, ocean living, and a little bit of paradise. We’ve recently upgraded our solar panels, batteries, and onboard power system, and now it’s time to see how our off-grid power setup handles everyday liveaboard life. From running the fridge and charging devices to powering our essential gear, we’re closely monitoring how our sailboat electrical system performs while we live at anchor like we would on a long-term bluewater cruising adventure. But this episode isn’t just about boat upgrades and sailboat systems — it’s about the lifestyle that comes with living on a sailboat. We spend our days swimming straight off the boat, exploring the island beach, and enjoying the freedom that comes with anchoring in remote locations. This is the dream of cruising life, slow travel by sailboat, and world travel by boat. As the sun goes down, we share sundowners with friends in the anchorage — one of our favourite parts of the sailing community and liveaboard lifestyle. These moments are what make cruising under sail so special: simple living, ocean views, good company, and complete freedom from life on land. If you’re interested in sailboat living, liveaboard sailing, boat life, beginner sailing, or you’re a sailboat owner dreaming of sailing the world, this episode shows both sides of the journey — the practical side of building a capable, self-sufficient cruising boat, and the incredible lifestyle that comes with it. Follow along as we turn our boat into an ocean-ready home and take more steps toward our goal of sailing around the world. This is real liveaboard cruising life — solar power, saltwater swims, island beaches, and sunsets at anchor. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:28 Arriving at the Anchorage 03:31 Swimming Off the Boat 04:16 Tender Off The Deck 05:06 To the Beach 06:28 Sundowners 07:45 Cockpit Lights 08:12 Early Morning Swims 10:23 Breakfast on the Sailboat 10:45 Anchor Up Please leave a comment, like and subscribe to follow our journey. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! INYO is stunning. She is virtually a new boat. Officially a 2024, this Fountaine Pajot Isla 40 is barely broken in, and she is entering the period where no serious maintenance will be required for many years. Her owner bought the boat at the factory, sailed to the Canaries, then finally crossing the Atlantic to Grenada. The passage was almost entirely under sails, and the engines have just over 200 hours! The owner is selling because of life circumstances unforeseen. INYO epitomizes contemporary cruising catamarans. At 40’, she is very accommodating as well as being easily manageable for any sized crew. She is a coveted owner’s version, with ample solar panels and batteries, high output alternators, and all the upgrades one would expect from a state of the art cruising catamaran. What distinguishes INYO are several things. 1. Condition, she is as new. 2. The Fountaine Pajot formula, which blends comfort and sailing performance nicely, never losing sight of the fact this is a fine sailing catamaran. 3. INYO is in Grenada, ready to go. Grenada is a fantastic place to start from, and is hurricane safe should the new owner elect to stay south this summer season. If you are in the market for the best Isla 40 on the market, or even a brand new boat, consider INYO. She is ready to go, and is for quick sale. We hit the road with friends Max and Karen for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Mexico — starting in Tequila, where the agave is blue, the pours are heavy, and the stories come easy. 🍹🇲🇽 This road trip is less about the destination and more about the moments in between: backroads, local culture, late nights, early mornings, and the kind of travel that reminds you why Mexico gets under your skin in the first place. From drinking tequila where it’s actually made to chasing authentic experiences far from the tourist trail, this is Mexico as we love it — raw, welcoming, and wildly alive. With the boat buttoned up for winter, it’s finally time to head into the mountains. In this episode, Steve, Robin, and Carter take the new DIY pulk sled bags into the backcountry for a winter camping and ski reconnaissance trip just north of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Before heading out, Steve walks through how the winter tent over Arabella has transformed life aboard—cutting down condensation, blocking wind, and making cold-weather living far more comfortable. After waiting out uncooperative weather, the crew loads the sleds with gear, including a compact wood stove, and sets off toward the Blow Me Down Mountains along the Humber Arm. Thin snow, exposed trail sections, and heavy sleds make the approach more challenging than expected, forcing off-trail travel through tuckamore and careful terrain choices. The trip becomes less about skiing steep lines and more about learning the land—scouting bowls, gullies, avalanche paths, and access routes for future trips when conditions improve. From sewing custom tent anchors out of old sailcloth to cooking dinner over a wood stove with ocean views below, this episode is a true shakedown: testing gear, refining systems, and getting to know a wild coastal mountain environment where the sea and alpine terrain collide. In this episode: • Winter tent living aboard Arabella • Testing DIY pulk sled bags • Backcountry ski camping in Newfoundland • Coastal mountain recon and route finding • Avalanche awareness without forecasting • Wood stove winter camp setup • Exploring where mountains meet the ocean -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. In this lofting video, I walk you through on how to calculating a new table of offsets with reduction for planking. Ultimate Guide: https://youtu.be/lZ3mOuXdB5Q If you are building a boat from a set of plans, understanding how to adjust your offsets for the thickness of your planking is essential for a fair hull.Learn how to calculate your table of offsets and apply the necessary reduction for planking! Lofting can be intimidating, but breaking down the math makes it simple. I will show you exactly how to take your line drawings and adjust them so your station molds are the perfect size for your planking thickness. We are the only boat builder with this method, and you are welcome to copy our method. This video explains a unique method for calculating a new table of offsets with deductions for hull planking, as demonstrated by JungleRanch. It shows how to use polynomial regressions, including 2nd and 3rd-degree equations, to achieve this, using numerical methods and data analysis to improve accuracy. This approach streamlines boat building and showcases practical machine learning applications in design. The calculation is performed in four steps, with a summary after each step. You can take screen copy and paste in a word document! 00:00 Introduction 00:24 The standard Bud McIntosh method 00:40 Step 1: Regression of the table of offsets 01:58 Step 2: Perform derivation and calculate the tangent angle 03:49 Step 3: Calculating the reduction for planking 05:21 Step 4: Check of the new table of offset #boatbuilding #BoatLofting #WoodenBoat #DIYBoat #MarineConstruction #NavalArchitecture #BoatDesign #Woodworking #HowTo #HullLines #BoatPlans #Molds #Shipwright #PlywoodBoatBuilding #BoatConstruction #Lofting

In this episode, I arrive at the marina to discover my Torqeedo outboard has been wrecked by a severe wind storm. It wasn't so much the 40 mph winds as it was the direction of the winds--directly into the marina. According to the marina staff, there were 3-4 foot waves rolling right over the breakwater and swamping all the marina docks. Several boats were damaged and the only other sailboat at the lake broke from its mooring ball and ended up against the shore. I survey the damage and do a detailed inspection of the boat to make sure everything else is okay. Then I search for and order the replacement parts required for repairs. This incident really has me wondering if keeping my sailboat in a marina in this volatile part of Colorado is sustainable. There's a reason this marina only has 12 slips and I've been the only sailboat to ever rent a slip here. Maybe it's time to become a daysailor? Is the boat market finally crashing? In 2026, the used boat market is in free fall. Prices are collapsing, inventory is piling up, and dealers are slashing price tags on nearly-new vessels just to stop the bleeding. The pandemic boat boom is officially over, and the hangover is brutal. In this video, we expose the 5 Critical Factors driving this massive market correction: Dealer Panic: Why barely-used boats are being sold for pennies on the dollar. The Inventory Glut: How the post-pandemic oversupply left thousands of boats with no buyers. Desperate Sellers: Why owners are racing to the bottom to offload their "money pits." Hidden Costs: The rising price of insurance, docking, and maintenance that is forcing sales. The Opportunity: What this crash means for savvy buyers looking for the deal of a lifetime. If you are thinking of buying or selling a boat in 2026, you cannot afford to miss this analysis. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Market in Free Fall 01:01 1. Why Dealers Are Slashing Prices 02:56 2. Welcome back to the bilges! This week, we're deep in the design phase of a problem every boat owner faces: the shower floor. Forget standard construction—on a boat, you're battling changing trim, mandatory inspection hatches, and the nightmare of a failed pump flooding the bilge. We break down our custom solution, designed from scratch. In this episode, we cover: • The core challenge: creating proper drainage fall on a level base. • Why the pump must be in a separate compartment (and the "floating lid" logic). • Designing an integrated inspection hatch with a gutter and drain. • Our "valley" solution to handle the boat's fore/aft trim. • From Cardboard Assisted Design (CAD) to computer modeling. The original saloon cushions sucked — hard foam and worn-out covers that really didn't make for a comfortable home. So much of this hardstand stay has been about finally doing the projects we couldn't while warranty was happening around us, and now, it's time for the cushions. This video covers the entire process of making a saloon cushion, from initial foam work to the final fit. To get it right, I went with high-quality, comfortable foam and outdoor fabric, because yacht DIY is only worth it if the results actually last. If you’re looking into sailboat DIY upholstery, hopefully, the insights into our fabric choices and assembly help you out. It's not always perfect, but the comfort and longevity really are going to be a game changer for life on board. Can production boats actually make good cruising boats? I recently stepped aboard a nearly new Hanse 588, and I’ll be honest—it was huge, beautiful, modern, and incredibly appealing. And it raised a question I hear all the time from sailors planning to cruise: Are production boats actually good cruising boats—or just good marina boats? In this Sailing Truth Show, we take an honest, experience-based look at production cruising sailboats without the usual forum nonsense. No bashing. No blind praise. Just a clear discussion of where production boats shine, where they fall short, and why smart sailors often disagree on this topic. We’ll talk about: What “cruising” really means—and why that word causes so much confusion Why production boats are so attractive to modern sailors Where comfort, space, and convenience genuinely matter Where capability, structure, and motion start to matter more When production boats make a lot of sense—and when they don’t We’ll also look at real-world examples and listings to show how to evaluate boats beyond marketing language, specs, or dockside opinions. This isn’t about telling you what boat to buy. It’s about helping you think clearly about the kind of cruising you actually want to do—and what tradeoffs you’re making, whether you realize it or not. #boatfoolssailing #boatoftheyear #usedsailboats #sailing Buy a New Sailboat — or Go Used for Half the Price? EP 146 Every year, the sailing world celebrates the Boat of the Year winners — innovative designs, cutting-edge technology, and eye-watering price tags. But here’s the question most sailors quietly ask: do you really need a brand-new boat to go sailing? In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, we take five 2026 Boat of the Year winners and compare them—loosely and honestly—to used sailboats you could buy for roughly half the price. This isn’t about bashing new boats. Many of them are excellent. It is about showing what smart money can buy in the used sailboat market—and why proven designs, solid refits, and real-world ownership often deliver more sailing for fewer dollars. We compare: -A modern performance cruiser vs a proven coastal cruiser and a legendary one-design -A high-performance trimaran vs fast monohull alternative and a use trimaran -A cruising catamaran vs serious monohull passagemaker and a used Cat -A serious mid-range cruiser vs its used doppelgänger -A luxury bluewater yacht vs a Maine-built classic CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro - 5 Boats of The Year vs Their Half-Price Used Counterparts 01:30 The First 30 VS Oceanis 323 and Melges 32 06:35 The Dragonfly 36 VS J122 and Dragonfly 35 12:43 The Excess 13 VS Tartan 4700 and Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41 18:39 The Jeaneau 415 VS The Jeaneau 419 and the Bristol 47.7 21:51 The Wauquiez 55 VS The Lyman-Morse 65 25:45 Final Thoughts - which would we pick? In this episode, we sail into Arenys de Mar, a small marina and coastal town we knew very little about before arriving. As is often the case in sailing life, we never quite know what to expect from these smaller stops — but Arenys de Mar surprises us in the best way. What was meant to be a quick two-day visit quickly turns into four as we settle into marina life, explore the town, and enjoy the relaxed local atmosphere. We wander the streets, soak up the charm of this Catalan seaside town, and catch up with fellow sailors we’ve met through Facebook and the wider cruising community. While we’re here, Helios finally gets a much-needed wash — always a satisfying job after weeks on the water — before we continue our journey down the Spanish coast. If you enjoy authentic sailing adventures, real cruising decisions, marina life, and discovering lesser-known coastal towns, this episode is for you. ⚓ In this episode: Sailing the Spanish coast Marina life in Arenys de Mar Exploring a small Catalan seaside town Meeting other cruising sailors Boat maintenance & giving Helios a proper wash Episode S03E41 Recorded: Late September 2025 Support Our Journey: 🔗 Check out www.sailinghelios.com for exclusive behind-the-scenes content 📸 Follow us on Instagram for updates: https://www.instagram.com/sailinghelios2023/ 📸 Follow us on Facebook for updates: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sailinghelios 4K Video Chapters: 00:00 Bugger, we forgot to stow the dinghy 03:54 Best docking ever! 09:08 Exploring Arenys de Mar 15:00 We forgot to leave 18:07 It's finished! 19:10 Washing the boat
