A simple modification that could save you time, effort, and potential engine problems. In this D-Log, I show you why I fitted a disposable inline fuel filter to our yacht's fuel system and how it makes checking for contamination far easier. Instead of dismantling filters every time you want to inspect your fuel, this simple addition gives you a quick visual check that can help identify problems before they become expensive. Whether you own a sailing yacht, motorboat, canal boat or any diesel-powered vessel, this inexpensive upgrade is well worth considering. In this video you'll learn: Why I added an inline disposable fuel filter Where it fits into the fuel system How it helps monitor fuel condition Why it's a cheap preventative maintenance upgrade Tips to make routine engine checks quicker and easier Preventative maintenance is always cheaper than repairing a damaged engine. ⚓ Thinking about visiting Mystic Seaport Museum? Before you plan the trip, come along with me as we explore one of America's greatest maritime destinations. 🌊 Mystic Seaport is far more than a traditional museum. It is a living waterfront where historic ships are still restored, traditional craftsmanship is still practiced, and America's maritime heritage comes to life through working exhibits, historic buildings, and one of the world's most remarkable collections of historic vessels. ⭐ At the heart of the museum sits its crown jewel—the Charles W. Morgan, the world's last surviving wooden whaling ship. Built in 1841, the Morgan completed 37 whaling voyages during an extraordinary 80-year career. Today, she remains afloat at the center of Mystic Seaport Museum's 19-acre living waterfront village in Mystic, Connecticut. 🎥 What You'll See ⚓ A complete deck-to-hold walkthrough of the Charles W. Morgan 🛏️ The captain's cabin, private head, and officers' accommodations 👨‍✈️ Crew quarters and how rank determined where sailors slept 🍲 The tiny galley that prepared meals for a crew of approximately 35 🐋 How whale blubber was processed into oil and stored in barrels below deck 🎙️ A conversation with a Mystic Seaport historian aboard the ship 🪵 Maritime carvings and what they meant to 19th-century sailors 🏆 Why the Morgan survived for decades longer than most other whaling ships 🏘️ A walk through Mystic Seaport's beautiful historic waterfront village 📰 Planning a Maritime History Trip? In my companion Homes, Boats & Travel newsletter, I compare Mystic Seaport Museum with several of America's leading maritime museums and historic ship destinations to help you plan your next adventure. 👉 Read the full newsletter: https://homesboatstravel.substack.com 💡 A Lesson for Every Boat Owner Historic ships remind us that age alone doesn't determine a vessel's value. Construction. Condition. Maintenance. Stewardship. Those are the qualities that determine whether a vessel survives for generations—and they're the same principles I encourage every boat buyer to evaluate before making a purchase. ⛵ Looking for Your Next Boat? We’re calling it—for now. The constant maintenance, the endless repairs, and the relentless grind of being full-time liveaboards on Agua Azul have hit a wall. We aren't living the "vacation myth"; we live this every single day, and right now, we’re burnt out. This is a pause, not an exit. We have plans to sail to Puerto Rico and beyond, but life beyond the hull demands our attention. We’ve been away from our sons, Nolan and Brandon, for too long. Danielle has a massive milestone—her 50th birthday—and she deserves to spend it with her twin, not fighting a clogged bilge. To make matters worse, traveling with Bella, our 13-year-old senior dog, has become a logistical nightmare due to restrictive, overreaching CDC regulations. This video is raw, honest, and unfiltered. We’re showing you exactly what goes into deciding to take a break and why sometimes you have to prioritize family and peace of mind over the life aquatic. We’ll be back on the water soon enough. What's in this video: The Breaking Point: Why we’re prioritizing family time and Danielle’s birthday over boat projects. The Logistics Nightmare: The truth about traveling internationally with a senior dog under current CDC policies. The Pause, Not the End: We are taking a break, but we still have our sights set on Puerto Rico and further adventures on the horizon. Connect with us: Website: www.chrisdoeswhat.com Channel: Chris Does What #LiveaboardLife #BoatLifeBurnout #AguaAzul #FamilyFirst #TravelWithPets #ChrisDoesWhat

We knew the first few months after leaving the boatyard would be a shakedown cruise. After rebuilding nearly every major system aboard ROAM over the last two years, we fully expected to find bugs, experience a little "infant mortality" with new components, and spend time fine-tuning everything we'd installed. What we didn't expect... was quite this many problems, quite this quickly. In this episode, we're temporarily calling Cambridge, Maryland home while we work through a growing punch list of repairs and adjustments before continuing south. So far we've dealt with: ⚓ A failed bilge pump 🧺 A washing machine discharge pump that quit working 🔧 A leaking oil cooler on our starboard engine that mixed engine oil with the coolant Each repair has had its own challenges. Replacing the washing machine pump turned into a surprisingly complicated project thanks to the machine's European voltage and the difficulty of sourcing the correct replacement. Even after the new pump arrived and was installed, another leak led us to discover a damaged discharge hose that also needed replacing. Fortunately, the failed bilge pump is covered under warranty. While we wait for the replacement, we were able to swap in one of the identical pumps we'd already installed for another system, getting us safely back in business. The biggest challenge, however, has been our starboard engine. After discovering a failed oil cooler, Shawn spent days flushing contaminated coolant and cleaning the engine so we could safely operate it again. Sourcing the replacement cooler became its own adventure. The genuine Yanmar part carried an eye-watering price tag, while an identical industrial version had to be sourced overseas from Turkey. Until it arrives, we've come up with a temporary solution that lets us safely maneuver the boat at low power. It's not ideal, but it'll get us where we need to go. Thankfully, Cambridge has turned out to be a great place to tackle these unexpected projects. We have easy access to parts stores, hardware stores, and everything else needed to keep the repairs moving. Even better, we have good friends nearby who have helped make the delays a lot more enjoyable. When we're not turning wrenches, we're taking time to explore this historic Chesapeake town. Cambridge is rich in Colonial and Civil War history and is famously the birthplace of Harriet Tubman, whose incredible legacy is woven throughout this region and the story of the Underground Railroad. This is exactly what a shakedown cruise is for. Every repair, every adjustment, and every lesson learned makes ROAM a little more ready for the adventures ahead. The destination can wait. Right now, we're focused on building confidence in the boat—and ourselves—one repair at a time. ⛵ The refit may be over, but the learning never stops. 00:00 Intro 00:22 Channel intro 00:34 Where are we? 01:30 Oil Cooler 04:03 Cambridge on the land 09:23 Bilge Pump 11:36 Cambridge on the water 15:30 Washing Machine 17:38 Wrap up 19:16 Like and Subscribe 19:40 End Card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website.More about Roam here ⛵️https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ 📲 Keep up with us on social FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/sgsailingroam INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/sailing_roam ----------------------------------------------------------- WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. As we learn to let go of our American drive to finish, and embrace the meandering routes across islands, oceans, continents, and people, we hope to gain a better sense of our world and our place in it. After clearing into Malé, we set off to explore the spectacular islands of the Maldives. Our first stops are Guraidhoo and Fulidhoo, where we wander through the small island villages, walk the beautiful beaches, and experience everyday life in the Maldives. Along the shoreline, we encounter the friendly stingrays that visit the beaches each day before heading to a nearby reef for an unforgettable swim with gentle nurse sharks. Returning to Crossroads Marina near Malé, we explore the bustling capital, stock up on fresh provisions at the local markets, and refuel No Regrets II before continuing our adventure. Before departing, we tackle one final maintenance job, replacing the seized top bearing on our screecher furler. With smooth furling restored, No Regrets II is once again ready for the next passage. From vibrant island communities and incredible marine life to essential boat maintenance, this episode showcases both the beauty and the realities of cruising the Maldives. 🏝️⚓🦈 Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:31 Leaving Male 01:50 Guraidhoo Island 02:54 Fulidhoo Island 04:13 Swim with Nurse Sharks 06:17 Crossroads Marina, Male 08:00 Refuelling 09:02 Screecher bearing replacement WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. Today, we are completely redefining the ultimate barbecue side dish by making Smoked Baked Beans entirely from scratch using dried beans on the PitBoss Titan Pellet Smoker. Do-It-Yourself Fuel Tank Cleaning: https://www.practical-sailor.com/blog/do-it-yourself-fuel-tank-cleaning/ Florida is one of the best places in America to own a boat, but it also has a growing problem with abandoned, at-risk, and derelict vessels. In this Practical Sailor episode, we look at Florida’s derelict boat crackdown, what makes a vessel legally “derelict,” why old fiberglass boats are so hard to dispose of, and how Florida’s new rules affect cruisers, liveaboards, project boat buyers, and anyone anchoring long-term in the state. We also cover what boat owners should do before a tired boat becomes a public problem, including title transfers, maintenance responsibilities, storm preparation, legal disposal options, and Florida’s Vessel Turn-In Program. If you have ever been tempted by a “free boat,” a cheap sailboat project, or an abandoned-looking cruiser, this episode explains why the cheapest boat can quickly become the most expensive one. After arriving in Bora Bora, we fuel up and set off to circumnavigate the island by bike. Along the way, we stop at the gendarmerie to see if it’s possible to complete our check-out process in less than 24 hours. When they tell us it is possible, we jump into action and begin the final steps of clearing out of French Polynesia. But the adventure doesn’t stop there… watch to see the horrible discovery we made in the bilge, how the check-out process actually went, and what turned out to be our final provisioning run before departure. It’s the last stretch before we officially leave the country—don’t miss it! #sailingvlog, #frenchpolynesiasailing, #boraborasailing, #mooreasailing, #sailingcatamaranlife, #overnightsail, #sailingpassage, #leavingfrenchpolynesia, #clearingoutfrenchpolynesia, #bilgeproblem, #boatmaintenance, #provisioningforpassage, #liveaboardsailing, #southpacificsailing, #cruisingcatamaran, #sailingcouple, #leopard44catamaran, #sailingadventure, #sailingaroundtheworld, #sailinglifestyle, #societyislandssailing, #sailingtocookislands NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. After years of planning, countless boat projects, endless checklists, and months of preparation, the moment we've been working towards is finally here. In this episode, we take you through the final three days before we leave the dock and begin our dream of sailing around the world. Join us as we complete the last-minute sailboat preparations, finish provisioning the boat, tackle final jobs, and make sure everything is ready for life as full-time liveaboard sailors. Preparing a sailboat for offshore cruising is never simple, and these final days are packed with excitement, emotions, and plenty of last-minute tasks before casting off. One of the highlights of this episode is our farewell party, where we gather with friends and family to celebrate this incredible milestone. Saying goodbye to the people who have supported us throughout our sailing journey is both exciting and emotional as we prepare to leave our home waters behind and set off on a global sailing adventure. Whether you're a sailor, a liveaboard cruiser, a sailboat owner, or someone dreaming of travelling the world by sailboat, this episode offers a real look at what it's like in the final days before a major offshore departure. From boat preparation and provisioning to the emotions of leaving everything familiar behind, this is a chapter every cruising sailor can relate to. Our goal is to document every step of our journey as we transition from preparing our boat to becoming full-time world cruisers. If you've ever dreamed of sailing across oceans, exploring remote islands, embracing the cruising lifestyle, or living aboard a sailboat, you're in the right place. Subscribe and follow our journey as we prepare to leave our current life behind and explore the world by sailboat. With every repair, upgrade, and lesson learned, we're getting closer to the adventure we've been dreaming about for years. The adventure we've been planning all winter has finally begun. After leaving the tiny outport of Francois, we make the journey north to Twillingate in search of Newfoundland's famous spring icebergs before returning to Arabella and continuing east along the remote south coast. Then comes the moment Steve has been waiting nearly two decades for. After years of studying maps, satellite imagery, and old reports, we finally sail past the massive unclimbed granite wall that inspired this entire expedition. Standing beneath it, it's hard to believe it's real. With over 100 pounds of climbing gear ferried ashore, we begin preparing for what we hope will become the first new climbing routes established on these incredible cliffs in over a decade. But before any climbing can begin, Arabella needs a secure anchorage. That means building a custom stern mooring system that will allow us to safely leave the boat while we disappear into the wilderness for days at a time. This is what we came for. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Today I'm making the deadeyes and mounts out of Acetal to connect our dyneema rigging to the boat. Only 6 days before the crane comes to put the mast up. Re-uploaded video after the first 5 seconds got lost during rendering/upload. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). What causes your boat electronics to randomly reboot the moment you power up your chartplotters? For two seasons, our Nautitech 46 Open had a frustrating gremlin — the Victron Cerbo GX would restart whenever the sailing instruments came online. No faults, no alarms, just… silence, then a reboot. In this video I finally track it down.Using an oscilloscope, I captured exactly what was happening during startup — and the culprit was a classic marine startup brownout: the simultaneous inrush current from multiple devices pulling the voltage low enough to drop the Cerbo GX offline. I'll explain how cable impedance turns ordinary startup loads into a real problem, walk through the clues that ruled out other causes, and show the capacitor-bank fix that solved it for good. After the fix: clean startup every time⚓ Though our symptoms were Cerbo GX-specific, the troubleshooting process applies to unexplained reboots across marine electrical systems — chartplotters, autopilots, instrument displays, and more.🛠️ Parts & links in the description below. 👇 Drop a comment if you've chased a similar ghost on your boat.#victron #cerbogx #marineelectronics #nautitech46 #boatlife #sailing #marineelectrical #boatmaintenance #sailinglife

What seemed like a minor cosmetic issue led us to grind back a small area of fiberglass to see how far the cracks went. By the time we reached solid material, we had uncovered a section that needed proper attention. With the damaged area exposed, it was time to learn a completely new skill. Using epoxy, fiberglass, and fairing techniques, we carefully rebuilt and reshaped the rudder back to its original profile. It was a challenging repair, but one that gave us the confidence to tackle future maintenance projects with a little more know-how. #BoatRepair #FiberglassRepair #diyboatrepair ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⛵ Join us aboard our 40ft sailboat, Escapade, as we prepare for our upcoming Pacific crossing. 🔥 If you're enjoying the videos, you can Hype this episode on YouTube to help support the channel and share our adventures with more people. 🎥 Watch from the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcpg_1nM2Z5zzbEr20cfs0K1W3FAV46DJ 🫶🏽 Patreon (early access / ad-free): https://www.patreon.com/Leadingtheescapade ☕ One-off support: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/leadingtheescapade

We had really under powered winches (a 10 & an 8 both without self-tailing) and lots of galvanic corrosion on the winch pads. Bottom paint isn't just paint; it's a controlled release system for poison to prevent marine growth. This growth slows your boat, increases fuel burn, and can clog intakes. Choosing the right paint depends on your boat, water, and maintenance routine. #BottomPaint #BoatMaintenance #MarineLife #Antifouling

Life aboard an 80-foot steel schooner means every square inch has to earn its place. Anchored in the beautiful waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Scott continues the ongoing refit of The Alaskan Gypsy, building custom storage solutions and making progress on our liveaboard bathroom remodel. From replacing the old washer and dryer with a sliding tote storage system to leveling an unusable section of the hull and planning future cabinetry, every project makes this steel schooner a little more functional for full-time life aboard. In this episode you'll also see many of the tools Scott relies on while building aboard, including the Makita 36V cordless track saw, Makita cordless trim router, Makita cordless orbital sander, corded jigsaw, countersink drill bits, marine-grade plywood, reclaimed lumber from previous shipyard work, and Benjamin Moore paint as another section of the boat begins to come together. Living aboard isn't just about glaciers, whales, and incredible anchorages. It's also about problem-solving, woodworking, boat maintenance, organization, and constantly adapting your home to life at sea. New bikinis, new fender, what else is new this week on Isabella? We are on S/V Isabella a Super Mikado 56 manufactured in France by C.N.S.O. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has a excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. A big blow the other night with reported gusts of up to 60 mph pushed Isabella against the dock causing one of the fenders to be ripped away leaving only remnants of the top portion. We have never experienced that before, so weird. Luckily we found a replacement fender and it was on sale, yea! Karen has two new bikinis that she modeled for Steve. Let us know in the comments which one you like best. We spruced up the galley by adding a fan to keep things cooler. Wires from an existing light had to be snaked through the ceiling to connect the fan. Unfortunately, while removing the existing light it self disintegrated. Guess what we did? Yep, continued sprucing up the galley by adding new lights. DIY always brings its own set of surprises. Weekly maintenance includes cleaning out the strainers for the reverse cycle units. What’s not included is what different objects can be found in the strainers. This time, our front AC unit strainer contained a lively crab, a fish and a couple of baby oysters. All visitors from the sea were alive and well and promptly returned to water. Being somewhat near Savannah we have started preparation for moving to Texas in a few months and discussed cruising considerations in the comfort of the cockpit. Wind is a large portion of planning, the speed and direction all impact the sailing experience and progress. The Gulf Stream is another factor. We will be going against the current flow which can slow down our travel considerably. Waves can make the journey comfortable or miserable depending on their height and period (the time it takes for a wave to complete a cycle and indicates how far apart waves are spaced). There is a lot more that goes into the planning process and that’s for future episodes. Subscribers we are always thrilled to have you aboard and appreciate your support more than you know. 😘Thank you all for joining us on this episode of Sailing Intermission. Have you ever plugged your boat into shore power and simply assumed everything was safe? After an electrical fault aboard SV Impavidus, I decided to investigate exactly how marina shore power works, what reverse polarity actually means, and whether our boats are really as well protected as we think they are. In this video I explain, in plain English: ✔ What reverse polarity is ✔ Why Neutral and Earth are not the same thing ✔ The difference between European and North American shore power systems ✔ How RCDs (GFCIs) actually protect you ✔ Why a simple indicator can warn you before a dangerous fault develops This isn’t intended as a modification guide or professional electrical advice. It’s an educational look at the principles behind marine AC electrical systems so you can better understand your own boat and ask the right questions. Whether you sail in Europe, North America or anywhere else in the world, understanding your boat’s electrical system could one day prevent equipment damage—or something much more serious. ⸻ ⚠ Safety Notice Mains AC electricity can kill. If you are not qualified or experienced working with marine electrical systems, always consult a competent marine electrician before carrying out any work on your boat. ⸻ If you enjoyed the video, please consider subscribing to SV Impavidus and joining us for more sailing adventures, engineering projects and practical cruising knowledge from around the Mediterranean. Herby clears the way to begin building the structural components that the hull needs to be a proper bluewater cruiser. Just one month after completing the repairs from our devastating lightning strike, it's finally time to put No Regrets II to the test. In this episode, we pull anchor in Phuket and set sail west on our 1,500-nautical-mile Indian Ocean crossing to Malé, Maldives. Thankfully, we're rewarded with beautiful downwind sailing, with only one minor maintenance issue along the way—a welcome change after replacing so much of the boat's electrical and navigation systems. Ten nights later, we make landfall in the Maldives, completing our first major ocean crossing since the lightning strike and proving that No Regrets II is ready for her next adventure. Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:27 Leaving Phuket 02:08 Repairs at sea 04:29 Indian Coast Guard 08:51 Ship no lights 11:40 Male WHO ARE WE? We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. REUPLAOD.
