Boat improvement and boat restoration. In this video, we focus on a major job on the Nauticat, specifically addressing a concern about safety. The key update involved raising the handrail to improve security on the boat. This seemingly small boat project is crucial for safe boating. How to prevent falling overboard. How do you make a safe boat even safer? Easy—raise the bar. Literally. So we’ve taken matters into our own hands by upgrading the safety rail around the aft deck of our 1982 Nauticat motorsailer. These boats are already built like tanks, but we believe there’s always room for improvement—especially when it comes to staying on the boat. In this video, we show how we raised the guard rail height on the aft deck to improve safety and peace of mind while underway. It’s a small change, but one that makes a big difference. ⚓ If you’re into boat life, refits, or just practical upgrades that make sailing safer and more enjoyable, this one's for you. 🛠️ Subscribe for more DIY boat projects, safety tips, and life aboard a classic Nauticat. The video showcases a new heavy steel plate installed on the bow of a Nauticat 38 to prevent damage from the anchoring. This boat project aims to protect the fiberglass and prevent future gelcoat repair. Now the maja is protected from future damage. When you raise the anchor, it is easy for the anchor to cause damage to the boat. Our boat had damage to the gelcoat and we had to find a solution. Our solution was to mount a thick steel plate in the bow of the boat. This will be screwed in place, and in this way protect against damage. The anchor is the Vulcan 25 kg, with 100 meters of 8 mm galvanized chain. Sailing is a lifestyle, but it also requires constant vigilance and care. This video showcases some essential boat maintenance on a Nauticat motorsailer. Experience the boat life while learning about important aspects of sailing yacht ownership and boat repair. Addressing anchor damage on our Nauticat 38! In this video, we showcase some essential boat repair to the hull.

What are diesel bugs and how do you tackle them? This video showcases the issues with a 40-year-old boat, focusing on the importance of proper diesel maintenance. Learn about fuel contamination and the steps taken for fuel tank cleaning to restore engine performance and prevent future problems. A must-watch for boat owners! Dealing with diesel bugs is a common part of the boat life, here seen on a a Nauticat 38. Proper boat maintenance includes regular fuel tank cleaning and using a diesel bug treatment to prevent problems. Keep your diesel fuel clean to avoid engine issues. What have I done to avoid the fuel bugs or diesel bugs to get back? Let's see what happened to this motor sailor, a Nauticat 38.The boat is rather old, its 40 year old, but in good condition and with a new engine 4 years old, and almost a 1.000 hours. The condition of the fuel tanks are unknown at this time. The first trip of the year was early, perhaps a bit too early. It was 5 hours motoring. At the end I felt that the engine was not performing well. It did not stop, but it was not quite as it used to be. So, safe at my destination I checked the fuel filter. Then I was terrified. It was almost completely blocked by old fuel bugs. Have a look at this water separator. The fuel should be clear and green. Now it is just a brown mess.Luckily I was moored to a pier, but I was still 5 hours away from home, and the weather had changed. I did not dare to go back. I had to call the ghost busters. Or at least the fuel bug busters. Fuel bugs or Diesel bugs are a microorganisms that grow on fuels. They feed on the hydrocarbons in the fuel and create biomass, biofilms and damaging by-products. These microorganisms live in even the smallest amounts of water, often from condensation, and at the interface of fuel and water, where they can create thick biomass. So, I had to call the bug buster. He arrived with some impressive equipment. All the fuel was removed from the tanks. We have 2 tanks with 300 liters of fuel in each tank. The fuel was cleaned, and later put back on the tanks. He made three holes in each tank, to clean the inside of the tanks properly. Then the same procedure on the other tank. Here you can see how the tanks looked inside, before he cleaned it. This is after he cleaned it. It took half the day, and it cost a fortune, but I had no choice. Now I was ready to sail home again, and really start the season. So, what have I done since that time, so I don’t get this back? First, I use fuel additives to eliminate the bugs.I check my water separator often, and I change my fuel filters often. Second, I remove the water. Since water is heavier than diesel, it will stay in the bottom of the tank. Several times during the sailing season, I drain some diesel from the tank, to get rid of any water. Here you can see how I do it. The black hose is just for safety, in case someone opens the valve by mistake. I remove this black hose.Temporarily I connect the short blue hose, that lead to a small bottle. Then I open the valve just a few seconds, to drain water and fuel. Now you can see green clear fuel.In the beginning I got remains of the bugs in one of the tanks. Here you can see the fuel from port and starboard tank. Look at the difference. Now after some time, I get only green clear fuel when I do this. Now I do this some times a year just to be sure there is no water in the fuel. Then I sleep so much better! Hey guys, This is part 2 of my mini makeover series! Of course I’ll show all the details in a long format YouTube video soon! I had to shorten this video to fit it into the 1-minute video length allowance for Shorts on YouTube - there’s a longer version on my Patreon (link in my bio, you can subscribe FOR FREE). But like I said, I’ll also edit a long format video of my time on the hard in Grenada! 😊
Fixing a Critical Structural Issue on the Nauticat 38 – Strengthening the Hull for Safety How to improve chainplate lower sidestay Nauticat 38 The Nauticat 38 is a well-built and sturdy motorsailer, but owners know about a critical weakness in the hull and deck structure—if left unaddressed, this issue can lead to serious damage or even the loss of the mast over time. When we acquired our 1982 Nauticat 38, we noticed clear signs of stress: ✅ The deck was slightly bent upwards ✅ The teak decking was cracked ✅ Visible movement had occurred under high loads To prevent further damage and ensure long-term safety, we undertook a structural reinforcement project. Here’s how we strengthened the hull: 1️⃣ Opened the interior to access the chainplate below the deck 2️⃣ Removed the chainplate for modification 3️⃣ Welded a 5 mm steel plate to the chainplate for added support 4️⃣ Glued and bolted the reinforced chainplate back into place 5️⃣ Covered it with new teak planks for a seamless finish Now, the hull is significantly stronger, and we expect this fix to last at least another 40 years! If you own a Nauticat 38 (or a similar motorsailer), this repair is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your rigging and ensuring safe sailing conditions. 📌 Have you encountered this issue? When we first bought Acadia, she only had 200 watts of solar installed, it was basically enough to run our fridge and navigation equipment. We knew we would need something more before we left for the Bahamas so we created a custom bimini mount for our solar panels and now we have the option of up to 700 watts of solar! 00:00--Intro 03:15--Mounting the Panels 05:18--Wiring Explanation 06:12--Project Cost Breakdown 07:36--A 6 Month Review Installing Solar on a Boat Blog Post: https://abroadreachtravel.com/installing-solar-on-a-boat/ Amazon list of products used in this video: https://a.co/5n6jEKi Gemini Marine Products' full line of mounting hardware: https://www.geminiproducts.net/ They are an awesome small business out of Maine, that makes great quality products! Since we've been cooling our heels in Florida all winter we decided to spend some time in the boatyard getting Ecola in tip-top shape. A lot of the work we did was cosmetic, but they were projects that had been put off for far too long. This is not sponsored by Total Boat or Jamestown Distributors, we just love their products and have been singing their praises when we can. The bottom paint we used is the Total Boat Spartan https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/97802 The varnish is Total Boat Halcyon in Amber. It is a water-based varnish which makes storing and clean-up a breeze, and it also allows for recoating after only an hour!! I can't tell you how many hours it has saved us. https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/336256 Check out our Instagram to see our projects happening in real-time 🛠🔩⛵️ https://www.instagram.com/abroadreachtravel/ For All Our Boat DIY Posts Check Out the Blog: https://abroadreachtravel.com/boat-diy/ Our Alberg 30, Ecola, is a 1965 (early model) that has been in Andy's family for almost 40 years. After freezing on our way down the ICW this fall, we realized how important heat on a boat is for staying warm, and sometimes more importantly dry. Our cabin sole is original to our 1965 Alberg 30. A few weeks ago it finally gave out and we decided it was time to finally take care of replacing the flooring. We used vinyl plank flooring to cover the existing flooring for the time being. The project was definitely harder than we initially thought but the finished product looks great! Tools Used: Japanese Saw: https://amzn.to/2OtrDUZ Utility Knife: https://amzn.to/2ldAYBI Materials: Vinyl Plank Flooring (note the manufacturer does not recommend this flooring for marine applications so don't expect them to honor the warranty): https://fave.co/3jK1c97 Disclaimer: In the interest of transparency, please be aware that the links above may contain affiliate links and any purchases made through such links may result in a small commission for us at no cost to you.
