We started this catamaran refit by tearing down the ceiling panels in our saloon to discover that the balsa core had completely rotted away, leaving a gap between the upper and lower fibreglass panels making up the deck. In last week's episode I cleared out all of the rotten wooden core and prepared the surface to rebuild. I got a little carried away and just had to cross my fingers that I could actually complete this repair rather than just making a mess and leaving it at that. This is usually Brioni's area of expertise but with her still in recovery at the moment, the whole project is left for me to have a go and try and figure out. Let's see if I can pull this one off! In this episode we cut open our rudders, which have water in them between the fiberglass and the foam. We also clean out all of the diesel bug from our fuel tank and make a shocking discovery. The bottom of the tank is completely pitted, and was on the verge of leaking fuel all through the bilge. The fix for this is still very unclear. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing through Asia and planning to cross the Indian Ocean!! There are more options than ever before — diesel, fully electric, parallel hybrid, series hybrid — and every choice comes with compromises. In this episode we walk you through our thinking process, the challenges we faced while trying to source an engine, and the reasons behind the direction we decided to take for this boat. __________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life, with our son Oli. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. While in town, we visit the Namibia Maritime Museum, the only maritime museum in Africa, filled with incredible shipwreck history, navigation artifacts, and stories from Namibia’s rugged coastline. After exploring Lüderitz, we set sail on a 3-day offshore passage to Walvis Bay, sharing what life is really like living on a sailboat during a multi-day passage. Shannon also shows her boat life self-care routine, including microneedling her face while living aboard — because even sailors need skincare at sea! Our passage ends with an unforgettable arrival into Walvis Bay, Namibia, where we’re welcomed by amazing Namibian wildlife. Today’s adventure starts with a 5 hour road trip from Pattaya down to Koh Chang, where we jump aboard a Lagoon 400 catamaran for a beautiful sail through the islands of eastern Thailand. After a quick tour of the boat, we untie the lines and head out for an easy 10 mile sail south to Koh Mak. This part of Thailand has some of the most underrated cruising grounds in Southeast Asia — warm water, steady wind, and quiet tropical islands everywhere. Our destination is one of my favorite spots in the region… The Blue Pearl Bar on Koh Mak, an amazing little beach bar that’s perfect for watching the sunset after a great day on the water. Even better, the pups got to join us for the adventure, making it a perfect sailing day with the whole crew.
