With the gloom of Saturday thankfully passing, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team had an early start on Sunday for a three-hour session out on the Bay of Cagliari that again saw the test team putting the LEQ12 through her paces before the wind died off at midday. With a 7am roll-out, it was a very early start for the Italian shore team and for the sailors it was clearly another day for foil testing with long flight seeing one run last some 48 minutes in total. The recon unit observed that: “The monitoring of flow around the foil arm stocks and the inboard wing seems to continue as both boards were armed with the usual GoPro cases on pressure and suction sides while a new port side flap version has been declared with minor geometry changes.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
Sir Ben Ainslie was back onboard the ‘Silver Bullet’ T6 today on a chilly and breezy Palma Bay for a testing session that, similar to the other teams right now sailing in the LEQ12 mode, concentrated firmly on foil testing, pitch sweeps and cant angles. The British prototype was pushed to its limit with a new, and undisclosed, top speed thought to be into the mid 40 knot bracket but what was noticeable with the programme today was the concentration on modes of the boat. Speaking afterwards, a rather chilly Ben offered: “We were just trying different pitch sweeps with different board angles and so on to really give the design engineers the best idea of how those foils are performing and then that relates into how you go and design your race foils.” The variable, shifty conditions today called for the biggest J1 jib to be used throughout the afternoon and didn’t faze the testing programme as Ben continued: “It's hard when you’re trying to test and the wind’s changing around quite a lot, fortunately for us we were doing a kind of testing where actually the accuracy of the wind didn’t matter too much, it was more to do with how the foils were reacting to different speeds and pitches.” Section 41. It’s a fond farewell to Patriot, with the New York Yacht Club American Magic team concluding the weekend offshore before sailing her back to Pensacola to be greeted by patriotic red, white and blue flares to mark the end of her time as an America’s Cup workhorse. A graceful retirement awaits but it was one thoroughly entertaining final hurrah with the recon unit estimating that over 100 nautical miles was covered at blistering pace, so fast that in the seaway the recon RIB couldn’t keep up at times. Patriot was up and foiling for some 104 minutes, proving that there’s a lot of life still left in the tank and as a training and testing platform, she’s been sublime for the team at full scale. Paul Goodison, skipper alongside Riley Gibbs today, had a tinge of sadness about the de-commissioning of Patriot saying: “Yesterday we had some full on noise with up to 25 knots (of wind) and over 50 knots in every bear-away to then going outside and having a seaway - probably the biggest we’ve sailed Patriot in today - so a lot of challenging conditions and it's been great to experience that with the team from top to bottom and just see how everybody in the team has pretty much risen to the challenge. We've had two fantastic days sailing to finish Patriot here in Pensacola.” Section 41. With the wind Gods not playing ball for most of the week in Cagliari, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailors were keen to make up for lost time and hit the water on Saturday for a full-on day of foil and cant testing onboard their lavishly adorned LEQ12. The interaction with the foils is something clearly on the Italian design team’s mind and there were some interesting take-aways in the recon interview with naval architect Andres Suar who clearly has one eye on the conditions in Barcelona saying: “Basically in your design process you give quite a bit more weight to any event that is related to any crash down or hull touching so you need to take that into account and also how the boat will behave once (off the foils), the chances of dropping on a pre start and things like that you need for sure to take that into account as it will be a big difference, and also the interaction with the foils will be quite different.” Section 41. I’m working on it… - Check Back Soon ! How Much Paint do you need ? Bottom Sq Ft Formula: ( Boat Length x (Beam + Draft) ) x 0.6 -You can put ablative over hard paint but you don’t want to put hard paint over ablative I highly recommend using ablative paint as hard paint doesn’t wear off overtime like ablative and will build up with every coat you paint making the boat heavier in the water and having to blast the coats off every time can be extremely tedious and expensive. Also, if the boat is out of the water , after a just few days hard paint will oxidize and be useless. Ablative can be taken out of the water for a long period of time and splashed back in and it will still be effective. Taping - pull off the tape shortly after you are finished painting as it can be difficult to get off if left on for too long and stuck to dried paint, and of course, this is a very satisfying part of the job. ; ) You want to Wear gloves and glasses during the whole process and a respirator and coveralls as well while sanding and painting toxic anti fouling paint. *** Make sure you leave yourself some paint for the stand squares and any other areas the boat has been resting on , i.e. bottom of keel Make sure you tape off your metallic running gear / out drives / etc when using any copper based paint as it can cause corrosion. Wet Blaster I use : https://clearblast.com/clearblast-150/ Tip: If you want to save money on renting one of these or a similar one , find somebody else in the yard who wants to use one too and schedule your jobs around the same day or two. *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It was short but sweet today out on a tricky Bay of Palma with the winds frustrating the meteorologists, and when they did arrive, they came in weaker than expected. Nonetheless, INEOS Britannia made the absolute most of it, venturing out for a fourth day of training in a row and after a tow out to the kiteboard mecca of C’an Pastilla, the test-team once again had T6 popping with ease, even with the low-horsepower J3 jib up. It’s becoming a feature of the ‘Silver Bullet’ this ease of flight and one that other teams will be analysing closely. So effective is the control on the mainsheet traveller and so much effort expended through it that no surprise we saw the first breakdown of the affixed line today and as Bleddyn Mon, who was on the coach boat with Rob Wilson today, commented: “It does see plenty of action and…is one of the most highly loaded lines on the yacht so yeah obviously got a bit worn and reached the end of its life today… so that was a slightly small glitch but the guys quickly got on board and replaced it, we’ve got the spares on the water, so that wasn't really too much too much of an issue.” Section 41. Elise Beavis talks through the late-night Friday sailing session ahead of the long weekend. What a way to end a week. Emirates Team New Zealand held AC40-3 and their LEQ12 in dock waiting for a Friday weather window to appear and when it did, the team took the opportunity of the summer Auckland light to throw some remarkable shapes on their dancefloor of the Hauraki Gulf in big breeze and leaden, misty skies. The sheer sight of two AC40s lined up going hammer and tongs against each other is something new in world yachting and my goodness, it’s good. Section 41.

Follow along as I sail from Tenerife to Cape Verde on a training passage with world famous sailer John Kretchmer. This is real sailing in 20-25 knot downwind conditions in significant seas. Man overboard demonstrations, heaving to, preventer lines, celestial navigation. Great meals served in the dark keep us going for 6 days. This is part one of the trip to Sal Island of Cape Verde.
The INEOS Britannia battle-wagon rolled on again with another outstanding performance from the sailing test team who barely put a foot wrong all day on the water, churning out the data collection miles and then showing us some balletic turn-ups at pace, blistering gybes with very interesting and powerful low exit flight, and some whipsaw fast foil-to-foil tacks. Ben Cornish, something of an unheralded secret-weapon in the INEOS Britannia armoury, returned to testing duties on the wheel opposite Giles Scott with Leigh McMillan and Luke Parkinson taking the lion’s share of the pod duties. Bleddyn Mon, the vital tech-link between the sailors and the analysts, swapped in for Parkinson late in the afternoon and the team just didn’t miss a beat. Multiple flight modes were in full test and on display. Sheeting was co-ordinated and positive. And the day was a fabulous mix of getting what was required done early and then letting the sailors sail. Jeff Causey summed it up rather accurately afterwards when he said wryly: “There's technical priorities and there’s their sailing priorities so the day is always a balance of trying to arm wrestle between the two.” Section 41. By any measure, what Emirates Team New Zealand are doing in their quest to retain the America’s Cup, is impressive. Today the team had their two AC40s, one in pure one-design set-up whilst the other was in LEQ12 development mode, lined up for the first time that this has happened in the short history of this most exciting of new classes. Speaking afterwards, Pete Burling was blown away by the effort the whole team has made to get to this point saying: “It was an awesome day for the team to get two AC40s out on the water, one’s obviously in our development configuration and the other ones in the one design configuration, so it's been great to them relatively close to each other and that's been a big effort for the group over the last three months to get both ready and to try and get the team in a state where we can sail both boats competitively against each other.” Section 41. All around the Alinghi Red Bull Racing camp there’s an air of intensity with the team noticeably turning up the dial on every aspect of their campaign. With the new AC40 in the shed being assembled and the obvious anticipation around that, plus some Persico 69Fs that will be used presumably for Youth & Women’s selection as other teams are doing in this cycle, the Swiss are, pardon the pun, on a roll. Arnaud Psarofaghis, one of the new breed of next-gen ambassadors for the high octane 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona gave a fascinating interview post the session and asked about the stability at rocket speeds he said: “I think the faster you go, the boat gets more and more stable so when you are at the mid 44-45 knots the boat seems to be really locked in and it's quite ‘enjoyable’ to sail the boat at this speed. It's more in the transition zone between the upwind and downwind (where we) just get used to the boa,t and it's the first few times that we have sailed in this breeze, so the first bear away we always take a bit of care there, but it's been really good, so we just need to push more and more.” Section 41. A big testing day for the INEOS Britannia team who were out on a picture-perfect Palma Bay with the bit between their teeth to rocket-forward their testing programme. Long runs, with one recorded at a whopping 48 minutes airborne, will have Mission Control back in Brackley, Northamptonshire high-fiving tonight as they sort through an absolute barrage of premium data. Speaking afterwards, Leigh McMillan who swapped in off the chase boat for Ben Ainslie and steered for the late afternoon part of the session gave a terrific interview to the Recon Unit’s Justin Chisholm, saying: I certainly think we overachieved today, over- achieved on miles covered and we got through all the list and then some today, so yeah it's a really good day out.” Section 41. Such is the buzz around the New York Yacht Club American Magic syndicate, thoroughly deserved from outstanding training performances on the water in recent months, that it’s no surprise to see legends of the America’s Cup showing up to see just what’s going down in Pensacola. And on Tuesday the DeVos family, the backers of the syndicate, hosted two of the most famous names in the sport - Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson – onboard the chase boat. Whidden was an eight-time campaigner with the great Dennis Conner, three-time winner of the Cup (1980, 1987, 1988) as well as being an inductee of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Gary Jobson was tactician for Ted Turner in 1977 on the all-conquering Courageous campaign, alongside being one of the most accomplished broadcast commentators on the Cup and an inductee of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame also. They came to see what the buzz was all about but unfortunately, today, the Pensacola wind Gods simply weren’t playing ball. The team called it a day after an hour and a quarter and came back ashore. Michael Menninger, the legendary Etchells World Champion, is an interviewee that the recon team has been wanting to speak with for some time. As the ace Flight Controller on Patriot, Michael’s insight into maintaining flight is invaluable and talking specifically about his role he offered: “It depends on the sea state and on the variability of the breeze, (flight) depends on a lot of things but as a flight controller you’re trying to be as consistent and smooth as possible just to avoid using as much of the flaps and the elevators as possible.” Section 41. Is spring around the corner? If you were in Palma today, you would certainly have thought so as a gentle breeze in the city ushered in an unseasonably mild 15-16 degrees and whilst that was welcome news to the shore team of INEOS Britannia – some even broke out the shorts – for the sailors it was a case of making the best of the day and towing far offshore to capture the afternoon zephyrs. The superb Rob Wilson, ‘supercoach’ to INEOS Britannia (the job title has stuck) was again on the microphone afterwards and gave his usual illuminating commentary. Talking about the conditions he offered: “We're still in this tricky weather pattern down here in Palma, so we’ve got these north easterlies and north westerlies, it was actually so warm today earlier on, we had 15-16 degrees that we were starting to get a little bit of a sea breeze up near C’an Pastilla and S’Arenal so with the north-westerly fighting that south-westerly we thought we’d cut our losses in the end and so it was a half hour tow to outside the Bay and we got some really good sailing in there.” Section 41.
