A haze descended on Palma Bay this afternoon that almost camouflaged Athena, the silver clad INEOS Britannia AC40, as she blasted around off the Cap Rocat cliffs with only the jet-black 3DL sails giving the game away. But it was far from an incognito performance as the sailors tweaked and moded all afternoon taking in huge learnings whilst throwing the boat around a laid course performing manoeuvres straight from the match-racing handbook. Concentration was on trim and Luke Parkinson hinted at the team perhaps being selective on the auto-pilot and going manual at times. One notable bow-down after lift-off was recorded on the recon video and no doubt some calibration is still being worked into the system, Parkinson described it as: “I guess that's just balancing out the autopilot trim and the direct control between turning it on and off and those sorts of things and again that's really just us starting to learn the boat and the buttons and when to select which mode up front.” – no harm done though, and they were flying with ease almost immediately. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024
The America’s Cup is changing at a rapid pace. The transition is well underway and the opportunity for young, talented foiling sensations to come through to the apex of the sport has never been greater. All across the syndicates we are seeing new faces emerging, as the teams seek out the Cup superstars of tomorrow. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have almost certainly found, and are nurturing, two talents that could very well dominate the competition for years to come. Today out on the Bay of Angels in Cagliari we got a glimpse of the future with Ruggero Tita and Marco Gradoni taking sole charge of the Italian LEQ12 and boy did they impress. Conditions were certainly not ideal. The waves were in, and the wind was in that transition zone where flight has to be worked at to be achieved. Umberto Molineris, a graduate of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli ‘New Generation’ programme himself was onboard as a flight controller and trimmer today and looked more than pleased with what the team accomplished on the water saying: “Actually it was a really good day with a slightly less wind than yesterday but good waves with chop which for sure it's nice to have some conditions which are a bit more tricky to sail so we can get a bit more used to waves.” Section 41. A one-boat programme became a two-boat programme and pretty soon, Emirates Team New Zealand will be running a three-boat programme in their epic, no-stone-left-unturned quest to defend the America’s Cup in Barcelona in 2024. The team teased ‘Te Rehutai’, the Cup winning, all-conquering, speed machine AC75 of 2021 on social media in recent days and official notification was served through the formal process that must have been an eye-opener to every challenger trying to wrest the Auld Mug from the Kiwi clutches. Marius Van der Pol, a member of the ETNZ ‘Power Group’ that has recently been selected after extensive and exhaustive tests, offered an insight into the training day, saying: “Yeah the boys went flat out and I’m sure they’d be keen to get back onshore and into the debrief.” Van der Pol and his fellow crew are looking forward to getting sailing in ‘Te Rehutai’ saying: “It’ll be awesome stepping on board that boat and seeing the second life that she's had, and will be awesome to see the new boys as well getting a spin on that boat.” Section 41. I really enjoyed driving this Sabre 45 Solon Express! The Downeast styling will never go out of fashion but the hull profile on this boat was just lovely for maintaining a healthy speed through ocean swells. I suspect this boat will appeal to many of you who have done extensive cruising on sailing yachts and are now looking for a vessel that will provide you with an ultra high level of comfort and security. She would be equally as comfortable for a typical day on the water as she would be running at speed in the ocean to your next destination. When it comes to traditional looks this Sabre 45 Salon Express delivers on looks and also funcaionality. I found her to be a very stable and easy platform to walk around and can see that for a family she would work exceptionally if your inside enjoying the air con or out the back deck with the sun shade deployed. The technical room with washer, dryer and extra fridges turns this into a vessel that will easily do long cruises should you need and her design means you can be enjoying the cooler climates of Tassie or the tropics up North and enjoy an endless season on this boat. After spending a day aboard the Sabre I was left witht he impression that this is the style of boat that people dream a lifetime of owning and I suspect if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of these then you'll probably hold onto it for a while. Sir Ben Ainslie was back in Palma today having travelled back from his favourite sailing venue of Sydney, Australia to take charge of INEOS Britannia’s box-fresh AC40 with a clear remit to get stuck in and start throwing some shapes on the flat dancefloor of the Bay of Palma. Ben didn’t disappoint. The team threw in almost 60 manoeuvres with a 97% foil-to foil success rate on some thirty tacks and a more than respectable 89% foil-to-foil success rate on the gybes. The playground was flat, the wind was fair and gusting in at 12 knots at times, but the pervading sense of the racing sailors was that they are itching for more to really put some miles on the clock in Athena. A tow-up in the morning as the pervading boredom of waiting finally cracked, offered the first flight for Ainslie who liked what he saw, saying: “Yeah it's a great boat I'm really impressed…it was relatively easy to sail for these kind of boats and performed really well in this light to medium breeze so yeah I had a great time. I think it will be a great asset for all of the teams and of course looking forward to the Youth & Women’s Cup next year in Barcelona - great tool.” Section 41. Join me on a full tour of this 2019 Sanlorenzo SX76. This Italian yacht was built to a US spec and it sleeps up to 8 guests with space for 2 crew. The helm is located on the flybridge or upper deck, giving you great views out of the dining room down on the main deck. I really liked the lounging area on the bow and the expansive beach club/storage area aft. Meet Peter and Kiki from Portland, Oregon. They sail a Vision 444. A relatively new Catamaran brand from South Africa. But not only the boat and the brand are new. Peter and Kiki were also new to sailing catamarans and the cruising life when they ordered the boat. But that didn’t scare them. They jumped at it, built their dream boat and have since sailed from South Africa to the Caribean and the US. Quite the adventure, especially considering Peter has Diabetes. Let’s find out what got them sold on the boat and how they manage to sail offshore with diabetes. --------------------------------------------- Welcome to Boatlife is best. The Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailors were absolutely sending it in Barcelona today, in pretty much perfect conditions as the ‘Garbi’ breeze blew in a healthy 14 knots from the south-west and allowed the Swiss to light the afterburners on their spectacular AC40. Not all smooth sailing today however, and it’s just as well that the team practised their capsize drill as the sailors got screwy on a gybe, stuck the bow into Davy’s Locker and toppled over at high-speed. These boats reward accuracy but bite if you get it wrong and it’s something that we have got used to over the course of this America’s Cup cycle. Yves Detrey, the megastar double winner of the America’s Cup and now in his fifth campaign was more than relaxed about the capsize in interview afterwards, saying: “Yeah that was fun. I mean it's the first time while sailing and it's going to happen again. It's part of the learning process and obviously was the first time for us to sail in that that bit of breeze, and the chop was getting higher and higher so, you know, it happens and it will happen again.” Section 41. The defence of the America’s Cup is very much on with Emirates Team New Zealand taking to the crystal summer waters of the Hauraki Gulf today to line up the One-Design AC40 against its snarling sister, the LEQ12 in full teenage development mode. Curly Salthouse, the legendary Kiwi head of on-water operations who is now in his tenth America’s Cup campaign summed up the short afternoon session accurately saying: “We waited for the breeze, sort of a typical sea-breeze day here in Auckland…and left the dock about 2.30pm something like that, unfortunately on one of the boats we've made a little change to the sail configuration, and we’ve done some damage to some battening, something that we couldn't really replace and keep going on the water. So, one boat’s back in early and we’ll lift that out and fix it for tomorrow, that's not a big job, but it's just something we’re trying…and it wasn’t up to the task, we’ll rectify that and go again.” Section 41. You will be hard pressed to find a more elegant sight in world sailing this year than the INEOS Britannia AC40 ‘Athena’ gracefully, elegantly, effortlessly flying against a sepia backdrop of Palma Bay, late afternoon in early Spring. What a sight to behold. The team waited for the breeze all day but when it came, as forecast, bringing in 13-14 knots under the cliffs of El Arenal, the crack test team of Giles Scott, Dylan Fletcher-Scott, Bleddyn Mon and Leigh MacMillan had Athena on its foiling knife edge, pushing hard to find the limits. Ben Cornish, another cool customer and current 5.5 Metre World Champion, gave a typically open and frank interview post-sailing, very much the hallmark of the INEOS Britannia team, and after his second day on the AC40 he was enthused, saying: “Yeah nice boat…you know it's a different beast to what we've got in the shed in a number of areas and in what the crew are doing and how you sail it, it's interesting for us and we’re learning something new… you never go on the water without a test list so today was no different to that and with that good breeze the guys ticked through everything they wanted to…it's a well refined racing boat and there’s stuff on there which is very good and you want to explore the ranges of what it's capable of. There's plenty to learn.” Section 41. We take the NEW Riviera 4600 Sport Yacht Platinum for a rest drive offshore in some good swells where we go up and down swell while discussing speeds and fuel consumption plus comfort levels and the overall experience at the helm. Next we take her inshore to run the twin Volvo 800 IPS (600hp) up to wide open throttle and discover her full speed potential before testing out the slow speed and marina manoeuvring. Once again Riviera have produced a Sport Yacht that will accommodate a large family for the typical summer day boating activities and keep you happy right up to extended offshore trips to new and far away destinations. This brand clearly excels at building ultra high quality yet super functional boats that are perfectly suited to harsh environments that include temperature extremes and true ocean conditions. I found the 4600 to look and feel like a true Sports Yacht and she punches well above her weight when it comes to useability and practical design that will make owner operators lives easier when out on the water. SailGP teams have been working together all day to assess the damage to the fleet and tech site at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix | Sydney. Tom Slingsby Australia SailGP Team driver & CEO: "Sydney is an amazing spot for sailing and we thoroughly enjoyed the support of the home crowd yesterday - you do normally get nice windy conditions that make for an exciting racetrack and we certainly had that with racing yesterday. "We are here assessing the damage to all of the boats and we are just trying to pack up and do the best assessment we can and come up with a plan moving on from here. "Two events to go and mathematically we're still not quite guaranteed a spot in the Grand Final, but we're pretty close. We've got to see what happens with Christchurch but we're really gearing up for the San Francisco finale."

RECIPES 1. Zucchini Slice Ingredients 400g zucchini grated 1 large onion finely chopped 1 cup cheddar cheese grated 1 cup self raising flour 1/2 cup olive oil 5 eggs 3 rashes of bacon or pancetta diced (optional) Salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) fan forced. Squeeze out as much water as you can from the grated zucchini over the sink. Combine zucchini, onion, cheese, flour, oil, bacon/pancetta and eggs. Thoroughly mix and then add to prepared baking tins. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until well browned on top. I doubled this recipe in the video and it freezes really well. 2. Zucchini Chocolate Loaf https://www.recipetineats.com/chocolate-zucchini-bread/ This is a recipe from the wonderful Nagi @recipetineats (www.recipetineats.com) 3. Zucchini Gratin Ingredients 1kg of yellow zucchini thinly sliced about 3mm thick (1/8”) 350mL cream 300g cheddar grated 200g parmesan finely grated 200g Brie or Camembert chopped, rind removed 50g butter Layer the sliced zucchini in a colander sprinkling a light coating of salt over each layer. Once done press down slightly on the slices and leave somewhere to drain off excess moisture for a few hours. Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) fan forced. Pat dry zucchini slice with paper towel and place in a layer on a baking dish overlapping each slice half way across the previous slice. In between each layer add a good handful of cheddar and parmesan cheese. Bring cream to a simmer in a small saucepan and reduce the heat. Add Brie or Camembert, butter and lots of ground black pepper and stir thoroughly. Pour mixture over layered zucchini and top with more parmesan and cheddar cheese. Bake for 30 minutes and allow 10 minutes for cooling before serving. 4. Courgette Soup Ingredients 1Kg chopped zucchini/courgette 2 onions finely diced 800mL bone broth 200mL Cream Place all zucchini, onion and bone broth in pressure cooker, bring to pressure and cook for 5 minutes. Allow pressure to release before opening. Alternatively you can simmer on medium heat in a normal sauce pan for 20 to 30 minutes. With a stick blender blend the soup to a puree, add your cream and salt and pepper to taste. 5. Stuffed Zucchini Boats Ingredients 2 large zucchinis cut in half with flesh scooped out Olive oil 2 finely chopped onions 1 tablespoon tallow/lard/ghee/butter 350g lamb mince 1 and 1/2 cups cooked medium grain rice 2 teaspoons chilli flakes 2 teaspoons ground cumin 100mL bone broth 150g finely chopped feta 2 tablespoons of crème fraîche or sour cream Handful of fresh parsley and mint finely chopped Parmesan to top Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) fan forced. Place zucchini boats on a roasting tray and drizzle with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Bake for 30 minutes. Fry onions and fat in a large skillet over medium heat until translucent and slightly browned. Add mince and fry until browned. Add chilli flakes, cumin, broth and rice. Stir together on medium heat until the broth has dissolved into rice and then add sour cream and feta cheese. Stir for a few minutes and then bring off the heat. Once cooled slightly add the finely chopped herbs and season to taste. Pull the zucchinis out of the oven and mound them up with filling and top with grated parmesan. Bake for a further 20 minutes before switching to the grill/ broiler setting in your oven for 5 to 10 minutes until the top of the boats are crispy. Rodney Ardern is a sailor who has been a part of two America’s Cup winning campaigns with the team and is now heavily involved in the recon side for Alinghi Red Bull Racing and he gave a good insight into the culture that has been forged for AC37 saying: “Well obviously it's a new team, there’s not too many of the old guys left, there's a few of us kicking around but I think we managed to form a team with a similar culture, everyone gets on well together, everyone's pretty easy going, everyone’s pretty focused on what they need to do and now I think we’re on a good track.” Section 41.
In this video we test the Beneteau 32 Gran Turismo offshore in some very lumpy sea conditions to see if this is a boat you can realistically run up the coast with a weather window to enjoy a new location for the weekend? With diesel and petrol options and a load of features including genset and air con this Beneteau 32 Gran Turismo is at a price point that will appeal to a lot of people due to the large number of boxes she ticks. The cockpit layout and full beam cabin makes this one of the best boats for entertaining in this size category and will allow you to still enjoy the day even when that unexpected extra few friends join you aboard as space is just not lacking on this 32ft sports cruiser. Again the Beneteau Group have been very thoughtful and clever in the way they have used all of the available space on this boat. For the right people this boat will provide a lot of value. The White Star Line's RMS Republic, launched on February 26th, 1903, sank after she collided with the SS Florida in a fog bank off Nantucket on January 24th, 1909. The disaster was the first time Marconi wireless was used to transmit a distress signal. The rescue was a major success, with only 6 people dying in the initial collision. With hardly any casualties, the Republic taught the shipping industry that modern ocean liners were virtually immune to major disasters. This confidence would ultimately prove deadly for RMS Titanic only 3 years later. When we first started exploring the Caribbean by sailboat almost 8 years ago, we had a huge amount to learn. We had to figure out how to live in such a small space, how to feel comfortable in foreign countries, and how to constantly deal with the dangers of sailing from one remote anchorage to the next. That first year of sailing was full of intense experiences, both intensely good and intensely bad. And through those experiences we learned that sometimes doing things the hard way and learning to become competent at something difficult, can reap rewards beyond our wildest dreams. And in so many ways I feel like our choice to raise our newborn baby on a sailboat has brought us back to square one. We have once again chosen to do things the hard way, a way that might seem at times like we are just banging our head against a wall, but a way that I believe may once again lead to rewards that we now can’t even fathom. But all of that is far in the future. Now we’ve got to figure out each aspect of raising a baby on a boat and hope that our desire to sail the world survives this crazy transition. INEOS Britannia rounded off a milestone week with yet another superb commissioning sail in ‘Athena,’ the team’s AC40 that was greeted again by flat water and a sub-10 knot breeze out on the Bay of Palma. The team broke out the J2 jib for its first outing and with just enough horsepower to pop to flight in the late afternoon, helmsmen Giles Scott and Dylan Fletcher-Scott, the latter who is officially according to an INEOS Britannia spokesperson: “with us as part of our ongoing sailing team trials as we look to build our squad for AC37,” had the boat on foils for the majority of a session that lasted some three hours. With Bleddyn Mon and Leigh MacMillan on flight control, it wasn’t long before the auto-pilot was turned off and the ace trimmers started playing with pitch, adopting the bow-up/stern down technique that they were using extensively onboard their LEQ12 prototype T6. Both flight controllers are key interfaces between the sailing team and the analysts back at the Mercedes Applied Science Mission Control centre in Brackley, Northamptonshire and as Bleddyn commented later: “There's kind of all the learning we’re trying to gather from this boat as much as we can for the design team back in Brackley and yeah we will keep chipping away with a few kind of specific tests here and there where we can and then also throw it around a racecourse whenever we can as well.” Section 41. Sailing Free Spirit. Well today we are taking the kids out for their 1st day sailboat ride. One loved it and the other 2 not so much but hey it was a great day trip to get them in the life and journey with us. Some fun interaction with the kids around the 5 min mark… And then they all have to take turns going up and onto the bow sprit. We figured out during this sail that we didn’t place the lines back correctly after Ian and because we didn’t go back out for a sail since the hurricane, we didn’t know that we had the lines backwards… Boat life!! Watch the following craziness that ensues around the 12 min mark. While it sounds like Andy is upset, it’s because we can’t hear him at the front of the boat and then all hands chip in to re-rig the lines for the sail. We made some fun referenced to our new Annapolis YouTube friends at Project Artemis and Aron and Janet Sailing. Hi Guys! International Moth World Champion, Dylan Fletcher-Scott, got his first taste of the America’s Cup today steering the INEOS Britannia AC40 on its second day of sailing out of Palma and as auditions go, it was pretty impressive. Leigh MacMillan put the AC40 into context versus the team’s prototype LEQ12 ‘T6’ saying: “It's different, there's a lot less going on for us on this boat, there’s a lot of things that happen automatically and so it's a different kettle of fish and really kind of geared up just for the racing not for the development. So we were just purely focused on the boat handling whereas in T6, the boat handling is a bit of an afterthought really as we’re into the data collection and getting the testing that we need for the designers… I think they are going to be great racing machines, they're all going to be identical and performing, it’s a really high performance boat, so it's going to be a great racing getting them out there all against each other.” Section 41. In a global first, Mark Beretta, one of Australia’s best-loved sports presenters and Channel Seven Sunrise reporter, hit Sydney Harbour to water ski behind the Australia SailGP F50 catamaran during practice. A professional water-skier, Beretta managed to maintain his customary composure for the adrenaline-pumping stunt while skiing over the waves behind one of the world’s fastest sailing boats that can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.
