Detailed test drive through bumpy water and into some pretty decent ocean swell before running down swell and into the flatter stuff where we kocked out a wide open throttle speed of 43Kts!!!! It's advantages like this that are really making the argument for outboards one these classic style sports cruisers very strong. I have more sterndrive sports cruisers over the last 20 years than I can count and can honestly say that this twin Yammy set up on the Regal 33XO is awesome and a real set up in ride quality and enjoyment with faster average cruising speeds and a wonderfully high top speed where she was sucking an impressive 198L at WOT so you're best advised to keep your speeds around the 30kts mark for sensible consumption levels. The interior and cockpit layout achieved on this boat is another impressive achievement for Regal. The space utilization down below makes this boat a true 4 person weekender with two decent beds and and epic mid cabin that many 40ft boats would be jealous of. Bouncing back magnificently from their travails with the LEQ12 last week, INEOS Britannia put everything behind them and launched their stunning AC40 (AC40-2), that has been tucked away in the base in Palma itching to splash since delivery from the boat’s builder McConaghy’s back in October. The INEOS ‘bounce’ was expected and Giles Scott, always the calmest cucumber in town gave a superb interview after sailing saying: “It seems like a long, long time ago last week, but the last day’s outing on T6 was obviously a big one for us and not really the way we wanted to run into its refit that it's now into…it's very important for us to be able to bounce right back from that and get back on the water and get stuck back into it and fortunately we'd got the AC40 waiting in the wings.” Section 41. Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s management team could be forgiven tonight if they strolled down to the dockside and gave their shore team a hearty pat on the back as the team’s brand new, devastatingly beautiful, AC40 took its first flight out on the waters of Barcelona and ushered in a new era not only for the team but for the America’s Cup itself. Nicholas Charbonnier, one of the crew today aboard the Alinghi Red Bull Racing AC40 was full of praise for the new boat saying: “I don't like the expression, but for the first time I would say it was ‘champagne sailing’ - there was really flat water in Barcelona, really nice breeze and yeah it's going to be very interesting to see how we go with a bit of waves compared to today because today couldn't be any better.” Section 41. On Wednesday the team ventured out of the harbour to tow-test the AC40 and were greeted by sunny, glassy, early Spring conditions – ideal for running through the ride-heights, foil cants and systems controls. Onboard were Arnaud Psarofaghis, Lucien Cujean, Nicolas Rolaz and Yves Detrey who shared roles and swapped pods through the test that started soon after dock-out at 1150 and saw the boat back on the dock at 1310. “Everything went as planned,” commented Nicolas Rolaz after sailing, “lovely boat.” Numerous flight modes and foil arm pitches were tested as described below in the on-water recon team’s notes and the hope is that the team will be sailing the first AC40 in Barcelona before the weekend – depending on conditions. To witness Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailing in perfect south-westerly breeze and flat waters off Barcelona, is to see a team high on the vertical learning curve. The sailors have just got better and better over the winter through first-class coaching and boat modifications designed to make flying and sail control all round much improved from where they started. It all came to bear on Monday as BoatZero was put through its paces, hitting speeds in excess of 45 knots over a nearly five-hour session in almost Auckland conditions that the boat was designed for. Silvio Arrivabene, the affable co-general manager for Alinghi Red Bull Racing gave a terrific interview covering a wide waterfront of the campaign to date, after sailing today, and talking about the partnership with Red Bull in relation to a similar partnership between INEOS Britannia and Mercedes, he explained that it is so much more than just technology they share: “Well I think the partnership is a little bit different, because if I understand correctly INEOS Britannia partners with Mercedes Formula One whereas we partner with Red Bull the company, the Austrian company, the drinks company in a way and then amongst the galaxy of companies they have there is also of course the Red Bull Racing Formula One team and Red Bull Technology with whom we exchange a lot on the technical side. That has certainly been a privilege to have that preferential access, but you know certainly our partnership is beyond technologies, it’s with Red Bull.” Section 41. It has been a stunning week for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, sailing in just about every condition on the wind and wave dial and so, determined to make the most of the weekend conditions and to capitalise on some light weather training, the team called for a super-early Sunday morning start to put their stunning LEQ12 platform through its paces. Michele Cannoni, the experienced Boat Captain and Shore Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, came to the post-sail interview and gave a good insight into the week’s sailing ahead of a planned break for the team saying: “This week we’ve been able to test in all the conditions, so we started in big breeze and kind of a flat water then we went to big breeze and big waves. Then today we were able to experience light wind manoeuvres with very light conditions. Our main goal today was to try to improve our take-off speed and our take-off technique and do manoeuvres like tacking and foiling gybes in light breeze and we were able to accomplish it.” Section 41. After the master-blasting, almost demonstration-sailing, that we saw earlier in the week from Emirates Team New Zealand, Friday’s session was one for the tweakers and wind whisperers but once again the sailing team showed the range of their abilities with some fascinating sail control on display. With so much concentration on sail design, it was a coup for the Recon Unit to grab the legendary Burns Fallow, a stalwart of the North Sails Auckland loft and Global Superyacht Manager who is ETNZ’s Chief Sail Designer, for an interview with a key team member widely regarded in the America’s Cup as the finest sailmaker. Looking at the LEQ12 development he set the scene saying: “These boats have massive ranges of power requirement from 8 knots of apparent wind speed to 60 knots so trying to get something with a lot of controls there and just how we do that is, well…top secret.” When asked about the mainsail inversion we’ve seen, Fallow offered: “Well, going back to the big boats, the 72s, that was definitely the game but of course they are much taller rigs so that was a necessity but when your apparent wind is getting right up there even on these short little stubby rigs, that also comes into play.” Section 41. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli put on a demonstration of foiling monohull excellence today out on a gusty, shifty Bay of Angels in front of Poetto Beach proving beyond any question from the very first flight the need for dynamic, rapid mainsail sheeting and traveller control. Indeed, today on a relatively short training session that lasted just under two hours, the Italians debuted a new, smaller-aloft mainsail which the recon unit recorded as having: “reduced square head girth and missing clew patch being sewed on the main itself.” Clearly the thinking being that in the higher bracket wind-ranges, inverting the top – impressive as that is - is actually detrimental to speed so the sail area has been shifted to the lower third. Fine margins being played with here and a very clever solution at the clew. Speaking afterwards, Marco Donati, from the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Electronics Department goes into the key differences between an AC75 and their LEQ12 Prototype. Section 41. INEOS Britannia, Britain's challenger for the 37th America 's Cup, has suffered damage to their T6 Test Boat after a capsize incident during a test day on Palma Bay, Mallorca in Spain. INEOS Britannia Skipper and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said, “It was a tough situation for the team once T6 fully inverted. Everyone came together well to resolve what could have been a much more serious issue in salvaging the yacht. Thankfully everyone is safe, and we can now focus on repairing the damage as part of a pre-scheduled upgrade window at the end of this week.” Section 41. With the eyes of the America’s Cup world on them, Emirates Team New Zealand are setting the benchmark and announcing the level, seemingly on a daily basis, that every other team will have to strive for in order to prise the Auld Mug from upstairs at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Speaking about the sail programme, Nathan Outteridge gave a fascinating insight and when asked about the inversion he responded: That’s the beauty of development sails, isn't it? And doing multiple iterations of sails you try and work out what wind range you want the sails in and what you want them to do up and down the wind range. It’s no secret that you want them flatter when it’s windier and deeper when it’s lighter and a lot of our sailing so far has been middle to upper end and we’re really looking to try and get the two boats in the water in the lighter breeze to see how our sail design programme is going. And also, there’s benefits of having an auto pilot keeping the boat really nicely locked in versus manual flight and having two boats that are identical etc and how you sail them. It’s fascinating for us, we learn lots from that and it's pretty insightful to go back and review the data and try work out how you can improve.” Section 41. It was a dull start to what turned out to be a highly productive data gathering day for INEOS Britannia with leaden, dull skies greeting the ever-cheery early morning shore team who are doing wonders with keeping T6 operational and the sailors firmly in their drysuits and on the water. Asked if the boat was up at 100% operational capacity now after several days of near perfect sailing time, Giles Scott was fairly candid when he said: “It's getting closer. We’ve still got some reasonably big-ticket items that we know we've got to iron out and will be looking to do that over the over the coming weeks. It's a bit of a balancing act getting good time on the water collecting that key information that the design team need for decisions for RB3 (Race Boat Three) so that's really the juggling act we're playing at the moment.” Section 41. It’s very hard to think of a more exhilarating sight in world sailing right now than two AC40’s short-course racing in 18 knots of breeze. That was the scene in Auckland this afternoon (Tuesday) with Emirates Team New Zealand hitting the water hard for a thoroughly entertaining two-boat session, lining up the LEQ12 against the one-design AC40-3 in auto-pilot mode over short 1-mile courses and letting the best in the world off the leash. On the run home, set up on port tack with boats flying on the one-design foil it was nip and tuck, and Sam Meech, one of the new breed of sailors in Emirates Team New Zealand and a bronze medallist in the 2016 Olympics in the Laser Class spoke about the speed differences saying: “Yeah at times they seem pretty similar, we’re still getting used to the boats, we’re quite far behind on days but we’re getting better as a team and yeah the boats are reasonably similar on port.” Section 41.
